C.J. Hendry: The Artist as Impresario
C.J. Hendry is an artist =E2=80=9Cof sorts,=E2=80=9D she says. She=E2=80=99=
s an Instagram phenom,=C2=A0 an entrepreneur, a copyright provocateur and a=
n impresario. Last year she converted a church in London into an immersive =
experience that involved a never-ending indoor =E2=80=9Csnowstorm.=E2=80=9D=
This month in Brooklyn, she has created a massive indoor playground for ch=
ildren and adults for a show called Plaid.=C2=A0
From her renovated Brooklyn townhouse just featured in Architectural Digest=
to acting as her own gallery to a documentary about her Copyright Infringe=
ment public art projects, there=E2=80=99s no shortage of topics to discuss.=
Hendry and I sat down in her studio to go through them.
Javier Calleja: The Spanish Kawaii artist has a global following. LiveArt h=
as a work on paper from 2017 with an $154,000 asking price.=20
Results
Sotheby=E2=80=99s Hong Kong Contemporary Sales =3D $104m
Sotheby=E2=80=99s Hong Kong Modern Sales =3D $67m
Looking at the numbers from the first major sales in two of the three globa=
l auction centers, the London sales cycle was down 30% but Hong Kong is onl=
y off 15%. The art market in 2022 may have been stuck in 2nd gear but the m=
uch-anticipated global downshift has not been as traumatic as feared. (We w=
ill have more detailed numbers next week in a newsletter.) In the meantime,=
the headline numbers for Hong Kong are above. Hammer ratios were weak indi=
cating that estimates will need to be recalibrated. The entire cycle is dow=
n 15% from the previous year. But the drop was more pronounced in Modern ar=
t which fell 19% in total sales volume. The Contemporary market was only of=
f 12% year over year.=20
Donald Judd: A LiveArt collector is looking for a medium-sized wooden sculp=
ture with a budget of $300,000 to $500,000.=20

Prints-a-palooza
Fifteen years ago, one of the rare examples of Barnett Newman=E2=80=99s lit=
hographic series Cantos was auctioned for $2.057 million (that would be $2.=
8m in today=E2=80=99s dollars.) This is a rare event. The work is 2 of 18; =
a dozen of the full sets have entered museum collections; and a few were br=
oken up and sold off as individual prints. This set was purchased by a corp=
orate collection assembled over decades that now. That collection will now =
be sold divided into 400 lots auctioned in a single-owner Evening sale at C=

organized with Vivian Crockett with the help of Ian Wallace.
Her work has been seen in New York at various points throughout her career,=
but we felt that there was an important opportunity to showcase the arc of=
her practice, starting with the sculptural work that she made as a student=
in the nineties and up until the present. Throughout her career, there hav=
e been shifts as she has continued to experiment and push her work in diffe=
rent media, including collage, sculpture, performance, and film. We felt th=
at bringing these works together would be important to seeing through-lines=
and connections between her bodies of work. It was also important to highl=
ight her work because so many artists today are working with natural materi=
als, cyborgian creatures, and themes Wangechi explored for decades.
How Yayoi Kusama Transfomed Her Terrors into Art [ https://substack.com/red=

raphy of Yayoi Kusama on Lit Hub. Kusama=E2=80=99s fame and market clout ar=
e peaking with her global museums shows like the M+ retrospective now open,=
gallery events and the massive marketing push from her collaboration with =
LVMH. On the auction market, more than $60 million in Kusama=E2=80=99s art =
has already been hammered down. That gives her the 8th highest volume for a=
ny artist on the auction market in Q1 of 2023. That was without the $39 mil=
lion spent on her art in April=E2=80=99s Hong Kong sales. Gompertz writes t=
his about Kusama=E2=80=99s tactics in the 60s but they could also apply to =
the nonagenarian today:
The impulsive conclusion might be to write Kusama off as a media-manipulati=
ng show-off. That was certainly the opinion the press reached in both Ameri=
ca and Japan by the early 1970s. And they were right, up to a point. She wa=
s and is a savvy operator when it comes to attention-grabbing public relati=
ons. But with good reason. First, she had to stand out and stand up for her=
self to have any chance of making it as an unknown Japanese woman in the ma=
n=E2=80=99s world that was America=E2=80=99s post-war art scene. And second=
, she is her art, inside and out. She turns her panic-inducing alarm into p=
ositive, life-enhancing experiences. By going that extra step, and placing =
herself in her art and inhabiting her Kusama World, she is completing the a=
rtwork=E2=80=94the star in her universe enjoying the fantasy and the freedo=
m: Alice in her Wonderland.

York art world as a painter and teacher for the entire post-war period now =

a private collector=E2=80=99s show would be decried as market manipulation.=
Yet to get her work into museums, Dodd has had to rely on the support of a=
rtists like her long-time friend Alex Katz whose foundation has bought work=
from Dodd=E2=80=99s shows and donated them to Maine museums where both liv=
e in the Summer. It took until 2018 when Robert Gober bought and donated on=
e of Dodd=E2=80=99s works to get her included in the Museum of Modern Art. =
Even so, the painting has languished in storage for four years since then. =
Ann Temkin, MoMA=E2=80=99s chief curator, basically admits that she has no=
idea when it might get hung for the public. One could easily conclude that=
Dodd=E2=80=99s work just doesn=E2=80=99t rise to the level curators find r=
elevant. If so, this is a good lesson in the limits of collector influence.=
If not, it is an example of how easily good work can get overlooked.=20

donate 48 Calders to the Seattle Art Museum along with a $10 million endow=

ition to the estimated $200 million value of the four dozen works.=20
Michaela Yearwood-Dan: A LiveArt collector is looking for a painting with a=
$50,000 to $400,000 budget.=20
Warhol-Basquiat-Warhol
The Fondation Louis Vuitton=E2=80=99s Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition found=
a New York home at the Brant Foundation in 2019. Two years later, Andy War=
hol=E2=80=99s portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat sold in New York for $40 mil=
lion, a record for any of Warhol=E2=80=99s oxidation paintings. This week, =
the Fondation Louis Vuitton has opened a follow-up show to the Basquiat eve=
nt which drew 700,000 vistors. =E2=80=9CBasquiat x Warhol, Four Hands=E2=80=
=9D features 80 paintings or about half of the canvases the two worked on t=
ogether. These paintings only began to gain traction in the auction market =
around 2016. Since that time, 10 paintings have sold at auction for prices =
above $2 million. The most expensive depicted an NYC yellow cab and made $9=

biography of Yayoi Kusama on Lit Hub. Kusama’s fame and market clout=
are peaking with her global museums shows like the M+ retrospective now op=
en, gallery events and the massive marketing push from her collaboration wi=
th LVMH. On the auction market, more than $60 million in Kusama’s art=
has already been hammered down. That gives her the 8th highest volume for =
any artist on the auction market in Q1 of 2023. That was without the $39 mi=
llion spent on her art in April’s Hong Kong sales. Gompertz writes th=
is about Kusama’s tactics in the 60s but they could also apply to the=

son. First, she had to stand out and stand up for herself to have any chanc=

nd out. She turns her panic-inducing alarm into positive, life-enhancing ex=
periences. By going that extra step, and placing herself in her art and inh=
abiting her Kusama World, she is completing the artwork—the star in h=
er universe enjoying the fantasy and the freedom: Alice in her Wonderland.<=

To many, a private collector’s show would be decried as market manip=
ulation. Yet to get her work into museums, Dodd has had to rely on the supp=
ort of artists like her long-time friend Alex Katz whose foundation has bou=
ght work from Dodd’s shows and donated them to Maine museums where bo=
th live in the Summer. It took until 2018 when Robert Gober bought and dona=
ted one of Dodd’s works to get her included in the Museum of Modern A=
rt. Even so, the painting has languished in storage for four years since th=
en. Ann Temkin, MoMA’s chief curator, basically admits that she has =
no idea when it might get hung for the public. One could easily conclude th=
at Dodd’s work just doesn’t rise to the level curators find rel=
evant. If so, this is a good lesson in the limits of collector influence. I=
f not, it is an example of how easily good work can get overlooked. </span>=
