SuperRare Takeover

With the intense market conditions of late, we wanted to do a special =E2=
=80=9Ctakeover issue=E2=80=9D with esteemed collector Cozomo de=E2=80=99 Me=
dici, holder of some of the most notable digital artworks on SuperRare. We =
hope you enjoy these words from Cozomo!

In XCOPY's work, =E2=80=9CAll Time High in the City,=E2=80=9D the grim reap=
er rows a trader through a sea of blood. Minted on April 8th, 2018. A day w=
hen ETH is priced at $400. Just weeks earlier, it was $1400. A bloody ride =
is right.

Gm. If we haven't met yet, my name is Cozomo de=E2=80=99 Medici. And if you=
 had told me last November, when ETH was $4800, that it would be $1100 toda=
y, I would have told you you were f-ing crazy.

But here we are. Right back on that boat, in a sea of blood. Our personal =
=E2=80=9Call time high=E2=80=9D net worth, now just a painful memory.

What happens next, to our precious jpegs? Do prices hit zero? Is CryptoArt =
dead for good?

To get an idea of what may happen, many are looking to the crypto crash of =
2018.

But I feel a better place to look... may be...

The Great Comic Book Bubble of the =E2=80=9890s

Comic books have been around for 100 years. Up until the early =E2=80=9890s=
, if 10,000 people bought and read a comic book, it was a big success.

Up until then, comic books were mostly purchased for one reason - to read.

Then one day, everything changes.

A lucky hoarder discovers =E2=80=9CAction Comics #1=E2=80=9D - the first ap=
pearance of Superman - in mom=E2=80=99s basement. It sells it for over $1 m=
illion USD.

Then the same with =E2=80=9CDetective Comics #27," the first appearance of =
Batman. Another seven-figure sale and the media goes crazy.

The world starts looking for other comics, that have the first appearance o=
f other heroes.

"Experts" start analyzing and collecting new releases. Perhaps that day=E2=
=80=99s new character is the Superman of tomorrow... and will be worth mill=
ions one day.

And so the mania begins. Normies hear stories of average Joe collectors get=
ting rich, and proceed to ape in. Demand increases, so new comic makers spr=
out up. Average sales numbers of a hot comic book go from 10,000 issues, to=
 100,000 issues, to 1 million. Old and new publishers feed the beast. Creat=
ing rare, =E2=80=9Climited editions.=E2=80=9D Special covers. Hologram comi=
cs. Foil-stamping, and even =E2=80=9Cgold=E2=80=9D versions. Making for bid=
ding wars and more record sales.

Is this starting to sound familiar yet?

New buyers continue to fomo in, wanting their piece of the pump.

The savvy scoop comics by the crate, restricting supply, and increasing odd=
s of getting a rare. Crates are often "flipped" to the next speculator for =
big profit, before ever being opened.

Is this starting to sound familiar yet?

Soon, the mania trickles over to comic book authors and artists. Months ear=
lier, these creatives would have been thrilled to work on a comic that sell=
s 10,000 issues. Now, they won=E2=80=99t touch anything that doesn=E2=80=99=
t have guaranteed sales of at least 300,000.

Is this starting to sound familiar yet?

Then one day, the last sucker buys in. The bubble bursts. There is no more =
liquidity. Supply has exceeded demand, and 9 of 10 comic book stores go out=
 of business. Even Marvel Comics is forced to declare bankruptcy. True stor=
y.

And now, today, a comic book is considered a strong success if it sells... =
10,000 issues. The same as before the great comic book bubble.

Why back to 10,000? Well, that's about how many actual comic book readers t=
here are.

People just don=E2=80=99t "invest" in comic books, all that much, any more.

Will NFTs Ever Be The Same?

Now I'm sure when you were hearing about the comic bubble, you saw the simi=
larities to the last 12 months in NFT. Simply swap out superheroes for poo =
goblins and monkey pics.

But you may be saying... "Uncle Cozomo, we SuperRare fans are different. We=
 are here... for the art!"

That's good. We have something in common. Though you, like me, may have dis=
covered 1/1 art via CryptoPunks, Bored Apes, or your favorite collection.

As top collector Batsoupyum=E2=80=99s infamous =E2=80=9CNFT flow chart=E2=
=80=9D shows=E2=80=A6

There is no denying that the large-collection mania is what brought many of=
 us here. If things change, does that mean our world of 1/1 digital art cha=
nges too?

It=E2=80=99s All F-in=E2=80=99 Over

For the first time, I do think there is a non-zero chance that it is all f-=
ing over, and speculating on large collection NFTs is done.

No more investing, and your monkey pic is simply your ticket to a show or a=
 party, maybe a merch drop. Perhaps afterwards, your souvenir. But like a =
=E2=80=9Cweb 2=E2=80=9D ticket, not something you will think of as an inves=
tment.

However, I do feel there is a better chance these collections continue to r=
eshape culture. Media, film, merch, and music. And that millions will conti=
nue to invest, to be along for the ride.

But I could be biased, because I like the new stream of people discovering =
NFTs. And of course=E2=80=A6 I own a lot of different animal pictures.

Today's tech certainly allows holders to get more experiential value than c=
omic books. And as they say in every mania...

"This time, it's different."

And you know what... it usually is different. The =E2=80=9890s comic bubble=
 spawned an era of superhero films that dominated box offices for 20 years.

But as you can see, change didn't necessarily mean "up only" or even "up at=
 all" for the initial speculation asset. The technology that sparked the do=
t com bubble also changed the world. And most dot coms went to zero.

Another reason to never invest in any high risk asset, what you can=E2=80=
=99t afford to lose.

But Does It Matter?

If speculation continues, great news for 1/1 art. The more who come for pfp=
, the more who stay for Fewo, DeeKay, and Claire Silver.

Though no matter what the prices do, here=E2=80=99s one thing I believe str=
ongly:

Collectors have an emotional bond with their 1/1s that transcends price.

The value of a Basquiat may fluctuate over the centuries, but a Basquiat is=
 always a Basquiat. Your favorite 1/1 will always give you that special fee=
ling that called you to it in the first place, no matter what the artist=E2=
=80=99s recent sales look like.

You may check prices out of curiosity, but when you have a piece you love, =
you know you love it, because you don=E2=80=99t care about the value.

Whereas with a pfp collection, who doesn=E2=80=99t check the floor price co=
nstantly?

It=E2=80=99s just how they are designed.

Regardless, I think the last few weeks' market action speeds up something I=
've been preaching for a bit now... that I call...

The Great Divide

You see, while you and I, who are here for the arts, can appreciate and eve=
n may own a monkey pic or two=E2=80=A6

This large-collection mania has kept a great many collectors from entering =
the space. Especially those we feel are going to most support 1/1 artists=
=E2=80=A6

Big collectors of contemporary art.

They love the capability a digital canvas brings, but are confused by the c=
haos.

The Great Divide is a new entry path to digital arts. Directly through 1/1s=
, and also generative.

I feel this digital, non-pfp art category needs a new name. A brand of its =
own, to stand apart from the speculation.

Good news - the =E2=80=9Cnew name=E2=80=9D already exists, and has been wit=
h us since at least 2018.

In just the last 2 weeks, two of the great performers of our time - Jim Car=

And a couple of months ago, contemporary art collector and tastemaker Alber=
to Chehebar bought his very first piece of CryptoArt on SuperRare, a 3D scu=

The Great Divide is here. CryptoArt is not new, but it is now spreading its=
 wings, attracting a fresh group of aficionados.

 your ticket to a show or a party, maybe a merch drop. Perhaps afterwards, =
your souvenir. But like a =E2=80=9Cweb 2=E2=80=9D ticket, not something you=

'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">However, I do feel there is a better chance th=
ese collections continue to reshape culture. Media, film, merch, and music.=
 And that millions will continue to invest, to be along for the ride. </spa=

uld be biased, because I like the new stream of people discovering NFTs. An=
d of course=E2=80=A6 I own a lot of different animal pictures. </span><br><=

rtainly allows holders to get more experiential value than comic books. And=
 as they say in every mania...</span><br><br><span style=3D"font-family: 'T=

 style=3D"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">And you know what... it=
 usually is different. The =E2=80=9890s comic bubble spawned an era of supe=
rhero films that dominated box offices for 20 years.</span><br><br><span st=
yle=3D"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">But as you can see, change=
 didn't necessarily mean "up only" or even "up at all" for the initial spec=
ulation asset. The technology that sparked the dot com bubble also changed =
the world. And most dot coms went to zero.</span><br><br><span style=3D"fon=
t-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Another reason to never invest in an=
y high risk asset, what you can=E2=80=99t afford to lose.</span><br><br><sp=

 sans-serif;">If speculation continues, great news for 1/1 art. The more wh=
o come for pfp, the more who stay for Fewo, DeeKay, and Claire Silver.</spa=

o matter what the prices do, here=E2=80=99s one thing I believe strongly:</=

ctors have an emotional bond with their 1/1s that transcends price. </span>=

of a Basquiat may fluctuate over the centuries, but a Basquiat is always a =
Basquiat. Your favorite 1/1 will always give you that special feeling that =

MS', sans-serif;">You may check prices out of curiosity, but when you have =
a piece you love, you know you love it, because you don=E2=80=99t care abou=
