seen private collections of Harry and Linda Macklowe, Paul Allen, and other=
s. Last year, we saw Emily Fisher Landau=E2=80=99s formidable collection so=
ld, too.
This season, however, we=E2=80=99re going to get a chance to see the art ma=

* Arne=E2=80=99s latest discovery: In 1960, Arne Glimcher founded Pace Gall=
ery at 125 Newbury Street in Boston. His initial success as an art dealer w=
as built upon a number of different artists, many of them abstract painters=
, like Mark Rothko, and a number of them women, including Agnes Martin. A c=
ouple of years ago, long after handing over the reins of his now-internatio=
nal multi-space gallery to his son Marc, the 86-year-old returned to his ro=
ots by opening 125 Newbury as a =E2=80=9Cproject space=E2=80=9D in Tribeca.=
Most of the shows have had an elegiac quality as Glimcher looks back on hi=
s exceptional career at the center of what seems, at
times, to be a fading culture of modernism.
On Friday, he opened a show of bright, mind-bending abstract paintings by L=
os Angeles-based artist Lauren Quin. Lauren Quin: Logopanic, as the show is=
styled, is her first New York gallery show. She has already had out-of-tow=
n success at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles two years ago, and in Tokyo last yea=
r. Like Ilana Savdie and Lucy Bull, Quin composes her images out of vivid, =
almost garish colors and novel abstract forms, and the appetite for her wor=
k lit the auction market on fire even before her New York debut. Two years =
ago, while she was making the transition from showing with Friends Indeed, =
the San Francisco gallery, to showing with Blum & Poe, her auction market s=
aw a handful of sales around half a million dollars. That=E2=80=99s heady s=
tuff even for a 32-year-old with a Yale MFA and a BFA from the School of th=
e Art Institute of Chicago.

As so often happens when an artist=E2=80=99s markets jump the gun, Quin had=
yet to even find her footing as a painter. When Glimcher entered the story=
two years ago, he was visiting Los Angeles and stopped in to speak with Je=
ff Poe on his way to the airport. (The relationship between Pace and Blum &=
Poe galleries has long been the subject of art market speculation.) Arne s=
ays he asked his friend if he had seen anything interesting lately. Poe was=
getting ready to put on a small show of Quin=E2=80=99s art, and showed Gli=
mcher three of her works. Impressed, Glimcher asked where Quin=E2=80=99s st=
udio was. It turned out she worked just around the corner from Blum & Poe=
=E2=80=99s gallery. =E2=80=9CDespite the vast difference in our ages,=E2=80=
=9D Glimcher told me, recalling the moment he walked into her studio in L.A=
=2E,
=E2=80=9Csomething went click. I was swept off my feet. One rarely has that=
happen. That=E2=80=99s the thing I=E2=80=99m always looking for, seeing so=
mething I=E2=80=99ve never seen before. I said I=E2=80=99d like to give her=
an exhibition. She had no idea who I was.=E2=80=9D
Over the intervening two years, Glimcher started traveling back to L.A. to =
see her studio. =E2=80=9CI liked the trajectory of what was happening,=E2=
=80=9D he said approvingly. His show will present six of Quin=E2=80=99s new=
paintings for the first three weeks, and then change out for another six p=
aintings for the second three weeks. For a gallerist whose career has been =
so deeply invested in abstraction, Quin=E2=80=99s work has come as an unexp=
ected jolt of excitement for Glimcher, who feels that there is little novel=
ty in art today. =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s a very nostalgic period,=E2=80=9D he=
said, though it is unclear whether that=E2=80=99s a description of Contemp=
orary art or Glimcher=E2=80=99s own mood. Nevertheless, he said, =E2=80=9CN=
ovelty is something that I=E2=80=99m very interested
in.=E2=80=9D And Glimcher thinks Quin has the potential to do something tru=
ly original all on her own. =E2=80=9CShe knows the history of art like the =
back of her hand,=E2=80=9D Glimcher continued, citing Quin=E2=80=99s broad =
learning and deep knowledge. =E2=80=9CShe has her own new language of abstr=
action. I think she has the potential for greatness.=E2=80=9D
* Gagosian=E2=80=99s Cattelan strategy: Maurizio Cattelan, the conceptual a=
rtist whose work often appears to be an elaborate put-on, just had his firs=
t gallery show in 20 years, at Gagosian in New York. The show consists of t=
wo works, and neither is very funny. In one, sitting in the center of a vas=
t, empty white room is a white marble figure of a man in disheveled clothes=
lying on a bench. He appears to be sleeping (his hand covers his eyes), bu=
t white marble doesn=E2=80=99t display nuance very
well. The figure=E2=80=99s pants are open, and one hand clutches his penis =
as the sculpture dribbles water in the tradition of innumerable fountains t=
hat portray urinating boys and men. Declaring himself a deeply political ar=
tist in the exhibition=E2=80=99s press materials, Cattelan and curator Fran=
cesco Bonami see the marble fountain, titled November (2024) as a =E2=80=9C=
monument to marginality.=E2=80=9D

Opposite the fountain is a glistening, gold-plated wall that measures 68 fe=
et wide and 17 feet tall. The wall is composed of 64 individual steel panel=
s which have been plated in 24-karat gold and modified=E2=80=94to use the a=
rtist and the curator=E2=80=99s preferred verb=E2=80=94by gunfire. Like a s=
creen across the apse in a great cathedral, Cattelan=E2=80=99s wall of gold=
en panels makes the gallery space into a quasi religious one. Perhaps that=
=E2=80=99s the reason the piece is titled Sunday (2024). But you don=E2=80=
=99t have to buy into Cattelan=E2=80=99s Catholic imagery or his commentary=
on American society=E2=80=99s tolerance for violence and inequality to app=
reciate the simple beauty of the panels. It=E2=80=99s legitimate to debate =
whether the work is art or the commentary is trenchant. Plenty are doing th=
at right now on the great commons of
our time, Instagram. But it=E2=80=99s also worth recognizing the obvious re=
tail strategy here.
Much of the talk in the art market over the past several months has been th=
at few works are trading above $1 million. In part because of the inherent =
satire in much of his work, Cattelan=E2=80=99s primary prices were never ex=
travagant. At the height of his fame and currency as a contemporary artist,=
Cattelan=E2=80=99s work regularly traded on the secondary market in the se=
ven-figure range. At one point, eight years ago, his sculpture of a diminut=
ive Hitler kneeling in prayer titled Him (2001) sold at auction for $17.1 m=
illion.
Instead of creating a monumental piece in Sunday, Gagosian is selling the p=
anels individually. Each panel is a little more than 4 feet by 4 feet, a go=
od =E2=80=9Cdomestic=E2=80=9D size for collectors to live with. You can eas=
ily see one of the panels hanging in an expensive house denuded of its reli=
gious effect, its social critique reduced to cocktail
chatter. The asking price is $375,000 per panel, making what=E2=80=99s on t=
he wall at Gagosian right now a $24 million work (addition panels may be cr=
eated). But it will be sold in pieces to make the work more easily displaye=
d and owned. Early reports suggest the panels have been selling well.
* Independent by the numbers: The Independent art fair, which opens Thursda=
y at Spring Studios in Tribeca, is a favorite of collectors. It=E2=80=99s a=
lso renowned for providing exhaustive information on the artists who will b=
e shown. For this edition, they=E2=80=99ve published a breakdown of the 720=
works that will be on display from 89 exhibitors and 172 different artists=
=2E Interestingly, 36 percent of the wo=
rks have been made for the fair itself=
, while almost half (46 percent) were created by artists who would describe=
themselves as persons of
color.
As far as the market goes, 2024 is seeing a different set of price points f=
rom 2023. Last year, 45 percent of the works shown at Independent were pric=
ed at $5,000 or below, and 86 percent of the works were priced below $20,00=
0. The Independent=E2=80=99s organizers speculate that might have been a re=
flection of the kinds of work artists were making during the pandemic lockd=
own=E2=80=94smaller scale, works on paper, limited materials, etcetera.
This year, the price structure at Independent has shifted dramatically. Alt=
hough 65 percent of works are still priced below $20,000, a full 30 percent=
are priced between $20,000 and $50,000. That=E2=80=99s the largest single =
price category at the fair. Organizers point to two possible explanations: =
One is that galleries and artists are pricing in the inflation of the last =
two years. The other is that artists have begun to produce more ambitious w=
ork in materials and sizes.

As gigaweek begins in New York, the big auction houses are fantasizing abou=
t more than a billion in sales=E2=80=94down from last year, sure, but also =
not terrible for a year without a signature artist or collection in the spo=

The next two weeks are a crucial moment in the art market=E2=80=94the large=
st sales season, May, in the biggest market, the United States. Across New =
York this past week and rolling through the next two weeks, gallery shows a=
re opening, art fairs are taking place, the auction houses have their sale =
previews mounted and open to the public. Chelsea and Tribeca are choked wit=
h foot traffic. The auction house specialists will spend the next 10 days l=
iving in the galleries as art advisors stream through with their clients. E=
ven at the end of all of this, when the sales begin on May 13, bidders who =
seemed determined will evaporate and others will appear in the showroom wit=
hout notice. The art market is nothing if not filled with suspense.
While we wait to see how it all plays out, I=E2=80=99ve downloaded the lot =
data from my friends at LiveArt. What it
shows is a continuing migration in the art market, with some of that change=
coming from the overall market downshift.

First, let=E2=80=99s look at the topline numbers. Presale estimated value f=
or this year=E2=80=99s May auctions at Bonhams, Christie=E2=80=99s, Phillip=
s, and Sotheby=E2=80=99s is $1.252 billion dollars. That=E2=80=99s down 17 =
percent from a year ago and about half of what the sales were two years ago=
=2E As far as the presale estimates=20=
go, Christie=E2=80=99s came out on top at=
$575 million; Sotheby=E2=80=99s was close behind with $548 million; Philli=
ps has a surprisingly robust $112 million; and Bonhams is hanging in there =
with $17.3 million in presale value. On Friday, I spoke to a handful of Sot=
heby=E2=80=99s specialists at the opening of their exhibition. What pleased=
them most was their ability to land a lot of high-quality art during a sea=
son without a dominant collection. These specialists had worked hard to rea=
d the market and land what they believe are the right consignments. So you =
can
understand their sense of accomplishment.
The highest-value work of art in this season=E2=80=99s sales is a Jean-Mich=
el Basquiat with an estimate of $40 million. Last year, already a down year=
from the season before, there were three lots over $40 million: a Basquiat=
, a Gustav Klimt, and a Pablo Picasso painting. Last year=E2=80=99s sales h=
ad a clearly dominant artist, Picasso, whose work accounted for nearly 12 p=
ercent of the presale estimate value. In other years, the market share migh=
t be even higher for dominant artists like Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, Gerha=
rd Richter, or Basquiat.
This season, Basquiat is also the top artist by presale estimated value, wi=
th $96.7 million dollars. Monet is a close second, at $95.5 million. Picass=
o is a distant third, at $69 million. Unlike last year, not one of these ma=
jor artists breaks above 8 percent in presale market share. Does it augur w=
ell for a future market based upon a
broader number of artists? Or is this just a temporary feature of a market =
lull?
Name-Dropping
There are 747 different names in the sales this year, which is actually low=
er than the 835 artists represented last year. The top 10 artists by market=
share this year (Basquiat, Monet, Picasso, Joan Mitchell, Warhol, David Ho=
ckney, Ren=C3=A9 Magritte, Brice Marden, Francis Bacon, and Vincent van Gog=
h) are different from last year=E2=80=99s (Picasso, Magritte, Willem de Koo=
ning, Richter, Klimt, Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Ed Ruscha, Cy Twombly, an=
d Roy Lichtenstein).

These are hardly the only stories in this season=E2=80=99s market. That 88-=
name drop from last year to this year is most likely a reflection of the tu=
rn toward historical artists. In what is seemingly a regular multiyear pend=
ulum swing, the market becomes infatuated with emerging talent for a few ye=
ars before turning back toward historical figures. This undulation allows f=
or buyers to feel they are getting in =E2=80=9Cearly=E2=80=9D on an artist=
=E2=80=99s market.
Of course, the cycles can have brutal consequences once buyers exit any ind=
ividual artist=E2=80=99s market. Nowhere is that better illustrated than in=
the appearance of Mar=C3=ADa Berrio=E2=80=99s La Cena (2012), which is bei=
ng offered in Christie=E2=80=99s day sale ( https://www.christies.com/en/lo=
t/lot-6482478?utm_campaign=3DWall+Power+-+LEADS+%285%2F5%2F24%29&utm_conten=
t=3DWall+Power+-+LEADS+%284%2F14%2F24%29&utm_medium=3Demail_action&utm_sour=
ce=3Dcustomer.io&utm_term=3Df6c60615e3d301d48d28 ) with a $350,000 estimate=
=2E That=E2=80=99s not cheap. Except this=20=
particular work was sold two years=20=
ago at Sotheby=E2=80=99s for a record price for the artist of $1.5 million.=
That price was eventually slightly surpassed by another work later in 2022=
=2E Altogether, 11 of the the Colomb=
ian artist=E2=80=99s works sold for price=
s between $900,000 and $1.6 million between November 2021 and December 2022=
=2E After that, her sales didn=E2=80=99t s=
top, but they trailed off to prices=
below half a million.
This particular consignor must need the money. Why else perfect the loss af=
ter only two years? Could the work, a very good example of her earlier coll=
age paintings, make a big price close to the previous one? Sure. Does that =
seem likely in today=E2=80=99s market? Not really.

r, although there were surges of excitement surrounding the never-before-se=

Without the freight train of a multi-hundred-million-dollar single-owner sa=
le, the specialists at the auction houses have had to pursue the works they=
believe will attract enough bidders to build meaningful

er of them women, including <b>Agnes</b> <b>Martin</b>. A couple of years a=
go, long after handing over the reins of his now-international multi-space =
gallery to his son <b>Marc</b>, the 86-year-old returned to his roots by op=
ening 125 Newbury as a =E2=80=9Cproject space=E2=80=9D in Tribeca. Most of =
the shows have had an elegiac quality as Glimcher looks back on his excepti=
onal career at the center of what seems, at
times, to be a fading culture of modernism. <br/><br/>On Friday, he opened =
a show of bright, mind-bending abstract paintings by Los Angeles-based arti=
st <b>Lauren</b> <b>Quin</b>. <i>Lauren Quin: Logopanic</i>, as the show is=
styled, is her first New York gallery show. She has already had out-of-tow=
n success at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles two years ago, and in Tokyo last=
year. Like <b>Ilana</b> <b>Savdie</b> and <b>Lucy</b> <b>Bull</b>, Quin co=
mposes her images out of vivid, almost garish colors and novel abstract for=
ms, and the appetite for her work lit the auction market on fire even befor=
e her New York debut. Two years ago, while she was making the transition fr=
om showing with Friends Indeed, the San Francisco gallery, to showing with =
Blum & Poe, her auction market saw a handful of sales around half a mil=
lion dollars. That=E2=80=99s heady stuff even for a 32-year-old with a Yale=
MFA and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.</li></ul></=

arkets jump the gun, Quin had yet to even find her footing as a painter. Wh=
en Glimcher entered the story two years ago, he was visiting Los Angeles an=
d stopped in to speak with <b>Jeff</b> <b>Poe</b> on his way to the airport=
=2E (The relationship between Pace and=20=
Blum & Poe galleries has long been=
the subject of art market speculation.) Arne says he asked his friend if h=
e had seen anything interesting lately. Poe was getting ready to put on a s=
mall show of Quin=E2=80=99s art, and showed Glimcher three of her works. Im=
pressed, Glimcher asked where Quin=E2=80=99s studio was. It turned out she =
worked just around the corner from Blum & Poe=E2=80=99s gallery. =E2=80=
=9CDespite the vast difference in our ages,=E2=80=9D Glimcher told me, reca=
lling the moment he walked into her studio in L.A.,
=E2=80=9Csomething went click. I was swept off my feet. One rarely has that=
happen. That=E2=80=99s the thing I=E2=80=99m always looking for, seeing so=
mething I=E2=80=99ve never seen before. I said I=E2=80=99d like to give her=
an exhibition. She had no idea who I was.=E2=80=9D<br/><br/>Over the inter=
vening two years, Glimcher started traveling back to L.A. to see her studio=
=2E =E2=80=9CI liked the trajectory of=20=
what was happening,=E2=80=9D he said a=
pprovingly. His show will present six of Quin=E2=80=99s new paintings for t=
he first three weeks, and then change out for another six paintings for the=
second three weeks. For a gallerist whose career has been so deeply invest=
ed in abstraction, Quin=E2=80=99s work has come as an unexpected jolt of ex=
citement for Glimcher, who feels that there is little novelty in art today.=
=E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s a very nostalgic period,=E2=80=9D he said, though it=
is unclear whether that=E2=80=99s a description of Contemporary art or Gli=
mcher=E2=80=99s own mood. Nevertheless, he said, =E2=80=9CNovelty is someth=
ing that I=E2=80=99m very interested
in.=E2=80=9D And Glimcher thinks Quin has the potential to do something tru=
ly original all on her own. =E2=80=9CShe knows the history of art like the =
back of her hand,=E2=80=9D Glimcher continued, citing Quin=E2=80=99s broad =
learning and deep knowledge. =E2=80=9CShe has her own new language of abstr=
action. I think she has the potential for greatness.=E2=80=9D</p><ul style=

ian=E2=80=99s Cattelan strategy</i>: <b>Maurizio</b> <b>Cattelan</b>, the c=
onceptual artist whose work often appears to be an elaborate put-on, just h=
ad his first gallery show in 20 years, at Gagosian in New York. The show co=
nsists of two works, and neither is very funny. In one, sitting in the cent=
er of a vast, empty white room is a white marble figure of a man in disheve=
led clothes lying on a bench. He appears to be sleeping (his hand covers hi=
s eyes), but white marble doesn=E2=80=99t display nuance very
well. The figure=E2=80=99s pants are open, and one hand clutches his penis =
as the sculpture dribbles water in the tradition of innumerable fountains t=
hat portray urinating boys and men. Declaring himself a deeply political ar=
tist in the exhibition=E2=80=99s press materials, Cattelan and curator <b>F=

ated wall that measures 68 feet wide and 17 feet tall. The wall is composed=
of 64 individual steel panels which have been plated in 24-karat gold and =
modified=E2=80=94to use the artist and the curator=E2=80=99s preferred verb=
=E2=80=94by gunfire. Like a screen across the apse in a great cathedral, Ca=
ttelan=E2=80=99s wall of golden panels makes the gallery space into a quasi=
religious one. Perhaps that=E2=80=99s the reason the piece is titled <i>Su=
nday</i> (2024). But you don=E2=80=99t have to buy into Cattelan=E2=80=99s =
Catholic imagery or his commentary on American society=E2=80=99s tolerance =
for violence and inequality to appreciate the simple beauty of the panels. =
It=E2=80=99s legitimate to debate whether the work is art or the commentary=
is trenchant. Plenty are doing that right now on the great commons of
our time, Instagram. But it=E2=80=99s also worth recognizing the obvious re=
tail strategy here. <br/><br/>Much of the talk in the art market over the p=
ast several months has been that few works are trading above $1 million. In=
part because of the inherent satire in much of his work, Cattelan=E2=80=99=
s primary prices were never extravagant. At the height of his fame and curr=
ency as a contemporary artist, Cattelan=E2=80=99s work regularly traded on =
the secondary market in the seven-figure range. At one point, eight years a=
go, his sculpture of a diminutive Hitler kneeling in prayer titled <i>Him</=
i> (2001) sold at auction for $17.1 million. <br/><br/>Instead of creating =
a monumental piece in <i>Sunday</i>, Gagosian is selling the panels individ=
ually. Each panel is a little more than 4 feet by 4 feet, a good =E2=80=9Cd=
omestic=E2=80=9D size for collectors to live with. You can easily see one o=
f the panels hanging in an expensive house denuded of its religious effect,=
its social critique reduced to cocktail
chatter. The asking price is $375,000 per panel, making what=E2=80=99s on t=
he wall at Gagosian right now a $24 million work (addition panels may be cr=
eated). But it will be sold in pieces to make the work more easily displaye=
d and owned. Early reports suggest the panels have been selling well.</p><u=
l style=3D"margin:0;color:#000000;font-size:16px;line-height:30px;margin-to=
p:0;margin-bottom:0;list-style-type:square;mso-special-format:bullet"><li><=
i>Independent by the numbers</i>: The Independent art fair, which opens Thu=
rsday at Spring Studios in Tribeca, is a favorite of collectors. It=E2=80=
=99s also renowned for providing exhaustive information on the artists who =
will be shown. For this edition, they=E2=80=99ve published a breakdown of t=
he 720 works that will be on display from 89 exhibitors and 172 different a=
rtists. Interestingly, 36 percent of the works have been made for the fair =
itself, while almost half (46 percent) were created by artists who would de=
scribe themselves as persons of
color. <br/><br/>As far as the market goes, 2024 is seeing a different set =

s look at the topline numbers. Presale estimated value for this year=E2=80=
=99s May auctions at Bonhams, Christie=E2=80=99s, Phillips, and Sotheby=E2=
=80=99s is $1.252 billion dollars. That=E2=80=99s down 17 percent from a ye=
ar ago and about half of what the sales were two years ago. As far as the p=
resale estimates go, Christie=E2=80=99s came out on top at $575 million; So=
theby=E2=80=99s was close behind with $548 million; Phillips has a surprisi=
ngly robust $112 million; and Bonhams is hanging in there with $17.3 millio=
n in presale value. On Friday, I spoke to a handful of Sotheby=E2=80=99s sp=
ecialists at the opening of their exhibition. What pleased them most was th=
eir ability to land a lot of high-quality art during a season without a dom=
inant collection. These specialists had worked hard to read the market and =
land what they believe are the right consignments. So you can
understand their sense of accomplishment. <br/><br/>The highest-value work =
of art in this season=E2=80=99s sales is a <b>Jean-Michel Basquiat</b> with=
an estimate of $40 million. Last year, already a down year from the season=
before, there were three lots over $40 million: a Basquiat, a <b>Gustav Kl=
imt</b>, and a <b>Pablo Picasso</b> painting. Last year=E2=80=99s sales had=
a clearly dominant artist, Picasso, whose work accounted for nearly 12 per=
cent of the presale estimate value. In other years, the market share might =
be even higher for dominant artists like <b>Andy Warhol</b>, <b>Claude Mone=
t</b>, <b>Gerhard Richter</b>, or Basquiat. <br/><br/>This season, Basquiat=
is also the top <i>artist</i> by presale estimated value, with $96.7 milli=
on dollars. Monet is a close second, at $95.5 million. Picasso is a distant=
third, at $69 million. Unlike last year, not one of these major artists br=
