er 14 years running the Frick Collection in New York, the 72-year-old forme=
r curator could rightly have expected that the press release announcing the=
 end to his tenure would be greeted with encomiums and paeans. 2024 will ma=
rk the return of the museum to its home in the former Frick mansion with it=
s newly completed expansion. With this announcement, Wardropper will have a=
 year of challenges but also a chance to bask in the achievement of his car=
eer. If the expansion were not enough, the search for a new director can co=
mmence with the Frick having held a universally praised exhibition of Barkl=
ey Hendricks=E2=80=99s portraits that allowed the museum to showcase the un=
iversality of its conservative role. And, yet, the New York Times chose to =
frame the story around a checklist of perceived negatives: Wardropper is th=
e latest among a generation of museum directors who are retiring; museum di=
rectors roles are changing (mostly because their institutions are becoming =
more and more relevant=E2=80=94but don=E2=80=99t tell the Times that); expa=
nding the Frick required Wardropper to thread a needle between the demand t=
hat his institution remain relevant and the constraints of his building, it=
s past and the needs of addressing the exploding interest in Contemporary a=
rt. The Times did, at least, go to Max Hollein for a quote: =E2=80=9CHe ope=
ned up a dialogue with contemporary thinkers and cultural figures,=E2=80=9D=
 Hollein said. =E2=80=9CThe Frick could be perceived as a very static colle=
ction. I think Ian changed that.=E2=80=9D And they were polite enough to gi=
ve Wardropper the last word which might have been better off as the lede: =
=E2=80=9CThe Frick has been this ivory tower with the key thrown away in ma=
ny people=E2=80=99s minds,=E2=80=9D he said. =E2=80=9CI think we unlocked i=
t.=E2=80=9D
Rybolovlev Trial Opens Fast and with a Little Fury [ https://substack.com/r=

=99t usually let people tweet from their courtrooms. But the Rybolovlev law=
suit against Sotheby=E2=80=99s proved too much for those old-fashioned cons=
traints. Judge Furman seems to be moving the trial along at fast clip. Jury=
 selection was done by early afternoon on the first day of the trial leavin=
g lawyers for each side to make opening statements before the court broke f=
or the day. Some of the art press covering the trial filed before the fun b=
egan. Independent journalist and lawyer Matthew Russell Lee was live tweeti=

=2E But Rybolovlev=E2=80=99s lawyer, Danie=
l J. Kornstein, who prides himself=20=
on his =E2=80=9Ccreative=E2=80=9D lawyering, ran afoul of the judge on seve=
ral occasions including running over his allotted time by 50%. The judge is=
 allowing the trial to go forward on a fairly narrow basis considering all =
of Rybolovlev=E2=80=99s other claims in various jurisdictions were dismisse=
d. That leaves Rybolovlev with one last chance to get someone=E2=80=94anyon=
e=E2=80=94to give him satisfaction. Perhaps he=E2=80=99ll finally get it wi=
th a Manhattan Federal jury. We=E2=80=99ll be heading down to the trial tod=

Sometimes a journalist will inadvertently report a fact that does not fit w=
ith their own thesis. Katya Kazakina=E2=80=99s recent attempt to christen t=
he current climate a =E2=80=9Cpost-Babylon=E2=80=9D market did just that. T=
he thesis is that the market is in a state of shock and confusion after a o=
rgy of art buying. That doesn=E2=80=99t seem right. Or, to put it another w=
ay, that was quite true a year ago after the two-year frenzy of pandemic bu=
ying. But does anyone actually think 2023 was a raucous market orgy?=C2=A0 =
Didn=E2=80=99t the same writer just declare 2023 a =E2=80=9Cbuyer=E2=80=99s=
 market=E2=80=9D where seller=E2=80=99s would have to accept whatever terms=
 were offered?=20
Buyers and sellers have had a year to understand the current conditions whi=
ch are neither a buyer=E2=80=99s nor a seller=E2=80=99s market. The market =
is deadlocked between seller=E2=80=99s expectations and what buyer=E2=80=99=
s consider an attractive deal. Although the auction market=E2=80=94the benc=
hmark for much of the private market=E2=80=94has repriced significantly (mo=
re on this on Friday,) there are many places where the mismatch between buy=
ers and sellers leads only to frustration. ...

 completed expansion. With this announcement, Wardropper will have a year o=
f challenges but also a chance to bask in the achievement of his career. If=
 the expansion were not enough, the search for a new director can commence =
with the Frick having held a universally praised exhibition of Barkley Hend=
ricks&#8217;s portraits that allowed the museum to showcase the universalit=
y of its conservative role. And, yet, the New York Times chose to frame the=
 story around a checklist of perceived negatives: Wardropper is the latest =
among a generation of museum directors who are retiring; museum directors r=
oles are changing (mostly because their institutions are becoming more and =
more relevant&#8212;but don&#8217;t tell the Times that); expanding the Fri=
ck required Wardropper to thread a needle between the demand that his insti=
tution remain relevant and the constraints of his building, its past and th=
e needs of addressing the exploding interest in Contemporary art. The Times=
