Understanding Philip Guston Now
Philip Guston Now is the biggest international retrospective of the artist'=
s work in a generation. It's debut at the National Gallery of Art in Washin=
gton, DC this month comes shortly after the announcement of a major gift of=
the artist's work to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Both the retrosp=
ective and the donation contain a considerable number of works from the art=
ist's daughter, Musa Mayer.
In this podcast, we speak to the National Gallery's Harry Cooper, a curator=
of the show, about Guston's long and varied career. Cooper also talks abou=
t the confusion around Guston's symbolism and difficulty in knowing the mea=
ning or intent of his paintings.
After that, we speak to collector Claude Reich about Guston's market and wh=
y the artist attracts so many elite collectors yet still remains significan=
tly undervalued compared to his peers.

With only a few weeks until Cecily Brown=E2=80=99s show Death and the Maid =
opens at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Wall Street Journal profi=
led the artist and explained that the show is more of a concept than a retr=
ospective:
=E2=80=9CComprising 47 paintings, drawings, sketchbooks and monotypes made =
between 1997 and last year, Death and the Maid will explore themes long pre=
sent in Brown=E2=80=99s work, such as the memento mori, the vanitas and the=
specter of beautiful women flirting with death. Many of the works have nev=
er been shown before. The exhibition is inspired by imagery in her triptych=
Fair of Face, Full of Woe, which entered the Met=E2=80=99s collection soon=
after she painted it in 2008.=E2=80=9D
The show will also include two new paintings, Maid in a Landscape (2021) an=
d Death and the Maid (2022), which both suggest a woman dancing with a skel=
eton within a thicket of snaking brushstrokes=E2=80=94scenes inspired by De=
ath and the Woman, an Edvard Munch etching in the Met=E2=80=99s collection.=
There will be still lifes as well, like Nature Morte (2020), a depiction o=
f two lemons and a lobster that=E2=80=99s a take on 19th-century Dutch gold=
en age painting
There are many interesting aspects to Brown=E2=80=99s career but one that d=
oesn=E2=80=99t get mentioned enough is the fact that she is one of a growin=
g number of artists who manage their own primary markets among multiple gal=
leries:
Andrea Crane [=E2=80=A6] serves as a kind of agent and collaborator. =E2=80=
=9CWhen I was younger, I thought the whole point of the gallery was that th=
ey took care of everything so you could paint,=E2=80=9D Brown says. But as =
she and her career matured, she began to realize =E2=80=9Cmaybe it would be=
better to be more involved and not to have handed over the power quite so =
much.=E2=80=9D From the start, she says, =E2=80=9Cthe idea was always=E2=80=
=A6to be more independent and to be able to do projects freely with others.=
=E2=80=9D

te-up comes loaded with verified information: essential details about the c=
ar, plenty of photos and the auction records of that make and model, includ=
ing the ones that fell short of a reserve price. Instead of flowery languag=
e, there are basic facts. Rather than disappearing immediately, the cars, b=
ids and comments live forever. The increased transparency is the equivalent=
of people documenting their entire dating histories on their Tinder profil=
es.=C2=A0
Bring a Trailer=E2=80=99s financial model depends on actually selling the c=
ars that it curates. Mr. Nonnenberg says the company=E2=80=99s sales rate h=
overs around 80%, and it=E2=80=99s crucial that it remains high because the=
costs of each auction are so low. Legacy auction houses generally charge s=
ellers a negotiable 10% fee and take a roughly 10% commission from buyers. =
But on BaT, sellers only have to pay $99 to list their cars, and the 5% cut=
from buyers is capped at $5,000. The more they spend, the more they save. =
