SIGNS by Louise Stern is an unprecedented look at how written and signed l=
anguages filter the emotional response to iconic artworks. Including artwo=
rks and written responses gives people a frame of reference to understand=
how reactions are filtered.
In this new body of work=2C Deaf attendees to the St John Deaf Club in Har=
ingey=2C London were asked to sign reactions to selected seminal=2C emotiv=
e artworks in purely physical=2C visual sign language. The subjects of the=
films were then asked to write down as many or as few words connected to=
these replies as they like. Swatches from digital images of the selected=
artworks=2C the handwritten words=2C and photographs of other found mater=
ial from the deaf club=2Cwhere we filmed the series=2C were then collaged=
into and onto the films to form a series of moving image portraits in col=
lage form. Cutting edge technology merges with the physicality of 35mm int=
o an acute interrogation of medium=2C environment=2C and articulation.

About the Artist
Born in 1978 in California=2C London based artist and writer Louise Stern=
uses various forms of language to explore communication and isolation. St=
ern grew up in an exclusively deaf community (fourth generation deaf on he=
r father=E2=80=99s side=2C and third generation on her mother=E2=80=99s si=
de)=2C and saw in literature and visual language a way to investigate and=
liberate. Stern=E2=80=99s works have been exhibited in Geneva=2C Madrid=
=2C Barcelona=2C Istanbul=2C Paris=2C and London=2C and as a writer she wa=
s the founder and publisher of Maurice 2002-2009=2C a contemporary art mag=
azine for children. Stern has also employed other mediums including dance=
and film in her practice.

Louise Stern=E2=80=99s Eruption is a video triptych which depicts a volcan=
ic eruption displayed on two screens. In the centre=2C a performer - Jonat=
han Hall Kovacs - uses sign language to express the audio and visual exper=
ience of the eruption. The work is an embodied physical and emotional erup=
tion expressed through an unspoken=2C unwritten language. Eruption is a vi=
sceral depiction of an abstract experience; the work highlights the comple=
xity and beauty of meaning transmitted outside of sound or speech.

;">In this new body of work=2C Deaf attendees to the St John Deaf Club in=
Haringey=2C London were asked to sign reactions to selected seminal=2C e=
motive artworks in purely physical=2C visual sign language. The subjects=
of the films were then asked to write down as many or as few words connec=
ted to these replies as they like. Swatches from digital images of the sel=
ected artworks=2C the handwritten words=2C and photographs of other found=
material from the deaf club=2Cwhere we filmed the series=2C were then col=
laged into and onto the films to form a series of moving image portraits i=
n collage form. Cutting edge technology merges with the physicality of 35m=
m into an acute interrogation of medium=2C environment=2C and articulation=
=2E </p>

Louise Stern uses various forms of language to explore communication and=
isolation. Stern grew up in an exclusively deaf community (fourth generat=
ion deaf on her father=E2=80=99s side=2C and third generation on her mothe=
r=E2=80=99s side)=2C and saw in literature and visual language a way to in=
vestigate and liberate. Stern=E2=80=99s works have been exhibited in Genev=
a=2C Madrid=2C Barcelona=2C Istanbul=2C Paris=2C and London=2C and as a wr=
iter she was the founder and publisher of Maurice 2002-2009=2C a contempor=
ary art magazine for children. Stern has also employed other mediums inclu=

o and visual experience of the eruption. The work is an embodied physical=
and emotional eruption expressed through an unspoken=2C unwritten languag=
e. <em>Eruption</em> is a visceral depiction of an abstract experience; th=
e work highlights the complexity and beauty of meaning transmitted outside=
of sound or speech.</p>
