uary, originally published on Sedition exclusively in 2019. Using the lates=
t in visual effects, the new work showcases extensive details.
Explore re-envisions of a distinctive visual language combining animation w=
ith painting, physical and digital methods, to communicate the ephemerality=
of flames and fire.

The Reliquary series focuses on the visual language and spiritual significa=
nce of fire. It emphasises the metaphor of the flame as animation and a rep=
resentation of the human spirit. The series of progressively spent candles =
represent the different stages of life and reflect life=E2=80=99s transitor=
y, fleeting and mysterious qualities.
An added paradox comes from the impossibility of a flame staying alight in =
an airless bell jar; these animated digital/painted hybrids only deepen the=
mystery of what we mean by the concept of a meditation on the corporeal di=
alogue between body and soul.

Paul Benney is an internationally acclaimed British artist best known for h=
is painting and installation work. =E2=80=A8A prominent member of the Neo-E=
xpressionist group during the 80=E2=80=99s in New York=E2=80=99s East Villa=
ge, Benney became known for his depictions of stygian themes and dark night=
s of the soul. He recently exhibited his large scale installation =E2=80=98=
Speaking in Tongues=E2=80=99 during the 57th Venice Art Biennale at the cha=
pel of San Gallo, Venice.

flame as animation and a representation of the human spirit. The series of=
progressively spent candles represent the different stages of life and ref=
lect life=E2=80=99s transitory, fleeting and mysterious qualities.
