The =E2=82=AC20m Titze Sale at Christie=E2=80=99s Paris
Anne & Wolfgang Titze focused on collecting works of Minimalism, Contempora=
ry Abstraction and post-war German painting. Their collection received its =
first public recognition nearly a decade ago with a large show at Vienna=E2=
=80=99s Belvedere Museum. The couple are now selling 39 works at Christie=
=E2=80=99s in Paris on October 19th with an estimate of =E2=82=AC20 million=
=2E The money raised will be used to cr=
eate an endowment for a foundation to=20=
keep the rest of the collection together. =20
The top lot in the sale is Gerhard Richter=E2=80=99s Waldst=C3=BCck from 19=
69. The work is estimated at =E2=82=AC4 million. One of four works in a ser=
ies that helped Richter make the transition from realist works to abstracti=
on, another of the series is in the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copen=
hagen. Adrian Ghenie=E2=80=99s Flight into Egypt will be sold with a =E2=82=
=AC2.5 million estimate. Another work by Ghenie, Charles Darwin as a Young =
Man will also be auctioned.=20
Other works in the sale include two paintings by Agnes Martin, The Lamp fro=
m 1959 and On a Clear Day from 1973; Georg Baselitz=E2=80=99s Wegtreten der=
 Mantel from 2014; Julie Mehretu=E2=80=99s Blue Magic from 2007; Yayoi Kusa=
ma=E2=80=99s Infinity Nets (AOTWX) from 2008 and DOTS-OBSESSION [QZBA] from=
 2008. Estimates have not been released for these lots. Of the remaining 30=
 works, many were made by female artists like Lisa Yuskavage, Sarah Lucas, =
Rebecca Warren, Joyce Pensato and Paola Pivi.=20
Liu Yiquan to Sell Modigliani, Kerry James Marshall & Jenny Saville

 than $150 million through Sotheby=E2=80=99s this Fall. In response to Artn=
et=E2=80=99s queries, Sotheby=E2=80=99s told the website that the, =E2=80=
=9Cproceeds from the forthcoming sales [are] destined to further key initia=
tives at the Long Museum, while also funding future acquisitions and the co=
ntinued fostering of cultural dialogues between different artists, geograph=
ies and generations.=E2=80=9D
According to Artnet, Liu and Wang asked all three auction houses to bid on =
a group of works by artists Zao Wou-ki, Ren=C3=A9 Magritte, David Hockney, =
Matthew Wong, and Yayoi Kusama. Three works singled out to Artnet by inform=
ants who did not get the consignment were Amadeo Modigliani=E2=80=99s portr=
ait of Paulette Jourdain from 1919 that sold for $42.8 million in the Alfre=
d Taubman sale; Jenny Saville=E2=80=99s Shift from 1996-98 sold for nearly =
$9 million in 2016; and a work by Kerry James Marshall, Plunge painted in 1=
992 that was sold for $2.1 million while Marshall=E2=80=99s retrospective M=
astry was making its way from Chicago to New York=E2=80=99s Metropolitan mu=
seum in 2016.=20
Results
Phillips Drop Shop: CJ Hendry =3D $588,650
Not all of the action in the art market takes place in the sales of paintin=
gs and sculptures. This week, Phillips debuted its new concept of direct-to=
-consumer artist=E2=80=99s sales with CJ Hendry=E2=80=99s combination scave=
nger hunt and online sale. Master of the stunt art event, Hendry took over =
Phillips Park Avenue headquarters for the weekend and filled it with inflat=
able crowns. Among the 50,000 red crowns marked SPARE in Phillips=E2=80=99s=
 space, Hendry had sprinkled 100 marked AIR. Any visitor lucky enough to fi=
nd one of the AIR crowns could redeem it for a cast bronze crown in a custo=
m carrying case. In the end, searchers only found 21 of the crowns leaving =
another 79 to be sold in Phillips=E2=80=99s Drop Shop along with one of Hen=
dry=E2=80=99s pencil drawings depicting a red inflatable crown. The total s=
ale was $588,650. But Phillips=E2=80=99s editions department now has the op=
portunity to make a market in all 100 crowns plus whatever number of crowns=
 Hendry made as artist=E2=80=99s proofs. A bronze inflatable and the connec=
tion between multiples and a more substantial work of art brings to mind Je=
ff Koons and his balloon dogs and the Bernardaud replicas he has sold so ma=
ny of as well. Phillips=E2=80=99s strength in the growing multiples market =
also makes this collaboration a potential harbinger of other art projects t=
hat mix the immediacy of collectibles with the aspirations of art works. No=
t every artist has Hendry=E2=80=99s strong following, social media skills, =
or ability to conceive of and execute the marketing events that she does. S=
o following this success won=E2=80=99t be easy.=20

ed in 1973 to Bonhams last year. Cornette de Saint Cyr had a high profile i=
n France due to his celebrity auctions and chairmanship of the Palais de To=
kyo for nearly a decade.
Claude Picasso dies at 76: Claude Picasso=E2=80=99s lawyer informed the pre=
ss that Picasso=E2=80=99s son with Fran=C3=A7oise Gilot died this week at t=
he age of 76. Claude ran the Picasso estate until he turned the authority o=
ver to his sister Paloma last month. Milton Esterow wrote about the conflic=
t among Picasso=E2=80=99s heirs in Vanity Fair in 2016 [ https://link.sbstc=

What=E2=80=99s Blue Chip Now? (Results): It wasn=E2=80=99t a surprise to se=
e that 33% of respondents thought only great work by a major artist should =
be considered desirable Blue Chip property right now. But seeing 19% say th=
at quality work by new talent was also Blue Chip was =E2=80=A6 interesting.=
 That=E2=80=99s the same percentage who thought any work by a major artist =
qualifies as Blue Chip which is also somewhat new as a point of view. A clo=
se 17% think high quality work by major or minor with good provenance makes=
 the grade. High quality work by minor artists just couldn=E2=80=99t compet=
e garnering only 12% of the votes.
The Indigenous Among Us
Indigenous land acknowledgements have become a clich=C3=A9d feature of inst=
itutional life, they are regularly invoked at public occasions and ceremoni=
es as if adding to an institution's provenance. What irks many about the se=
emingly =E2=80=9Cwoke=E2=80=9D performance is that these acknowledgements o=
ften treat the indigenous as though they are perforce a matter of history, =
fully past and eradicated.=C2=A0
Two exhibitions that were briefly open  in New York simultaneously this Sum=
mer=E2=80=94Jaune Quick-to-See Smith=E2=80=99s retrospective at the Whitney=
 and the Pueblo pottery show =E2=80=9CGrounded in Clay=E2=80=9D split betwe=
en the Vilcek Foundation on the Upper East Side and the Metropolitan Museum=
 of Art=E2=80=94demonstrate that indigenous communities persist in America =
even after thousands of years lived upon harsh lands and hundreds of years =
of enduring persecution from Spanish and American colonizers.=C2=A0
The show also reminds us that indigenous culture is alive, thriving and has=
 a great deal to teach us about the intimate symbiosis between art and cult=
ure, the individual and a community and its history.=C2=A0
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith=E2=80=99s show has closed but her art which emerge=
d from a Native epistemology in dialogue with the Contemporary artists of h=
er own generation makes a simple call for =E2=80=9Cevery part of our societ=
y to have representation by all of its citizens.=E2=80=9D Smith was the fir=
st Native artist to have a work enter the collection of the National Galler=
y in Washington but she doesn=E2=80=99t see that as a victory. =E2=80=9CThe=

Yet Indigenous communities experience their art in ways that are profoundly=
 different from the way we experience art. The =E2=80=9Cwe=E2=80=9D here ca=
n either be Westerners and our conception of art; or art world inhabitants =
and our commodification of art as a luxury item; or our culture=E2=80=99s f=
etishism of art as a signifier of status or a talisman within a secular rel=
igion of creativity. (Yes, there=E2=80=99s a lot going on in that sentence.=
)

ted by Pueblo communities presented by members of those communities. These =
clay pots were made for a variety of day-to-day purposes. Some were made in=
 the past few years; some were created over several decades stretching back=
 into the early 19th Century; and a few objects in the displays are as much=
 as a thousand years old.=C2=A0
The touring exhibition which debuted last year in Santa Fe celebrates the c=
entenary of the Pueblo Pottery Fund, a project begun by well-meaning wealth=
y settlers in Santa Fe who developed an interest in Indigenous art.=C2=A0
The Pueblo Pottery Fund eventually became the Indian Arts Research Center a=
t Santa Fe=E2=80=99s School for Advanced Research which holds some 12,000 I=
ndigenous works of ar [ https://link.sbstck.com/redirect/dc9158a0-257d-4507=

x_g6pp7gWdY ]t, many ceramic pots but also textiles and works in other medi=
ums, gathered over the last 100 years in two =E2=80=9Cvaults.=E2=80=9D No m=
atter how well intentioned the founders were, the premise of the pottery fu=
nd was, according to IARC=E2=80=99s current director Elysia Poon, =E2=80=9C=
unquestionably presumptuous and paternalistic.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0
What makes these works of art so very different from works that derive from=
 a European tradition is that they have a very different kind of status to =
Indigenous people. Pueblo community members view these utilitarian objects =
like people because they interact with the objects on a daily basis and bec=
ause they are a repository of historical experience. For the Indigenous, en=
countering these objects is a real-life version of that parlor game where y=
ou imagine yourself able to time travel. It begins with the question, =E2=
=80=9Cif you could have dinner with any figure from history?=E2=80=9D =C2=
=A0
For Indigenous people, being in the presence of these pots is like encounte=
ring their ancestors. According to Joseph Aquilar, an anthropologist, membe=
r of a Pueblo community and a contributor to the catalog of the exhibition,=
 =E2=80=9CHistorical memories and our understandings of pottery and other c=
ultural patrimonies are tantamount to a form of Indigenous intellect.=E2=80=
=9D By that he means the clay pots reflect =E2=80=9Ca physical, spiritual, =
and intellectual worldview that is inextricably linked to land, people, and=
 history.=E2=80=9D
But Indigenous art isn=E2=80=99t art because it was made by a talented arti=
st. It=E2=80=99s art because of the role plays in Pueblo life. =E2=80=9C[E]=
ven in its finished form, pottery does not inherently possess life by simpl=
y being,=E2=80=9D Aguilar adds. =E2=80=9CIn Pueblo ontologies, people give =
meaning and voice to pottery, and it becomes a part of our world through co=
nsecrated use in Pueblo society.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0
To address this very different worldview, the organizers of the exhibition =
dispensed with a traditional curator and created the Pueblo Pottery Collect=
ive which comprises more than 60 potters, designers, and other artists incl=
uding writers and poets drawn from 22 Pueblo communities in the Southwest. =
All are Native Americans (though a few non-Native museum professionals eith=
er participated in or assisted the collective.) They were each asked to cho=
ose a pot from the IARC vaults or the Vilcek collection and explain the imp=
ortance the object held to them. Nothing underscores the intimate and perso=
nal relationships between the members of this community and their art more =
than this curatorial strategy.=C2=A0
It also highlights an important strategy coming from the IARC. Aguilar make=
s no secret of his community=E2=80=99s frustration with the partial and fra=
gmented understanding of Indigenous culture held by institutions and collec=
tors. And he insists on the need for Indigenous voices to exert control ove=
r their patrimony.=C2=A0
=E2=80=9CThe inherent rights at stake for Pueblo people [=E2=80=A6] are the=
 right to control and contribute to the production of knowledge about our c=
ulture and cultural patrimony; to protect, preserve, and represent our cult=
ural patrimony and heritage on our own terms and to present our own underst=
andings and accounts of our cultural patrimony,=E2=80=9D Aguilar writes. =
=E2=80=9CAt the core of this mission is the affirmation that Western instit=
utions do not hold a monopoly on the understanding and dissemination of Pue=
blo culture and cultural patrimony.=E2=80=9D

One example is an Acoma jar made in the early 1900s selected by Erin Moniqu=
e Grant of the Colorado River Indian Tribes. =E2=80=9CThis pot is a blessin=
g and a gift,=E2=80=9D she writes. =E2=80=9CIts every aspect connects it wi=
th its home and its people: the clay is from the land and was gathered by a=
 relative for the purpose of its creation; the form is an evolution of jar =
shapes made by its ancestors; the designs are those of its village and neig=
hbors; the colors are derived from natural pigments of the land.=E2=80=9D
Grant=E2=80=99s affection for the object is tempered by her frustration wit=
h the way it has been viewed by its previous, surely well-meaning, owners. =
As Grant drily describes the misapprehension around the pot she chose, we c=
an see the humor but also recognize why this important exhibition is a mode=
l for understanding an art form that is both historically complex and vibra=
ntly alive today.=C2=A0
=E2=80=9CThe jar had previously passed through hands that believed its deco=
ration was of a fish,=E2=80=9D she writes, =E2=80=9Can =E2=80=98abstract fi=
sh=E2=80=99 at that. Yet through talks with Acoma relatives and simple rese=
arch, I found out that it is a thunderbird=E2=80=94a design its ancestors h=
ave been depicting and developing for centuries. Not a fish.=E2=80=9D

s of paintings and sculptures. This week, Phillips debuted its new concept =
of direct-to-consumer artist&#8217;s sales with CJ Hendry&#8217;s combinati=
on scavenger hunt and online sale. Master of the stunt art event, Hendry to=
ok over Phillips Park Avenue headquarters for the weekend and filled it wit=
h inflatable crowns. Among the 50,000 red crowns marked SPARE in Phillips&#=
8217;s space, Hendry had sprinkled 100 marked AIR. Any visitor lucky enough=
 to find one of the AIR crowns could redeem it for a cast bronze crown in a=
 custom carrying case. In the end, searchers only found 21 of the crowns le=
aving another 79 to be sold in Phillips&#8217;s Drop Shop along with one of=
 Hendry&#8217;s pencil drawings depicting a red inflatable crown. The total=
 sale was $588,650. But Phillips&#8217;s editions department now has the op=
portunity to make a market in all 100 crowns plus whatever number of crowns=
 Hendry made as artist&#8217;s proofs. A bronze inflatable and the connecti=
on between multiples and a more substantial work of art brings to mind Jeff=
 Koons and his balloon dogs and the Bernardaud replicas he has sold so many=
 of as well. Phillips&#8217;s strength in the growing multiples market also=
 makes this collaboration a potential harbinger of other art projects that =
mix the immediacy of collectibles with the aspirations of art works. Not ev=
ery artist has Hendry&#8217;s strong following, social media skills, or abi=
lity to conceive of and execute the marketing events that she does. So foll=

vaults.&#8221; No matter how well intentioned the founders were, the premis=
e of the pottery fund was, according to IARC&#8217;s current director Elysi=
a Poon, &#8220;unquestionably presumptuous and paternalistic.&#8221;&#160;<=

 26px; margin: 0 0 20px 0;">What makes these works of art so very different=
 from works that derive from a European tradition is that they have a very =
different kind of status to Indigenous people. Pueblo community members vie=
w these utilitarian objects like people because they interact with the obje=
cts on a daily basis and because they are a repository of historical experi=
ence. For the Indigenous, encountering these objects is a real-life version=
 of that parlor game where you imagine yourself able to time travel. It beg=
ins with the question, &#8220;if you could have dinner with any figure from=
 history?&#8221; &#160;</p><p style=3D"color: rgb(64, 64, 64); font-size: 1=
6px; line-height: 26px; margin: 0 0 20px 0;">For Indigenous people, being i=
n the presence of these pots is like encountering their ancestors. Accordin=
g to Joseph Aquilar, an anthropologist, member of a Pueblo community and a =
contributor to the catalog of the exhibition, &#8220;Historical memories an=
d our understandings of pottery and other cultural patrimonies are tantamou=
nt to a form of Indigenous intellect.&#8221; By that he means the clay pots=
 reflect &#8220;a physical, spiritual, and intellectual worldview that is i=
nextricably linked to land, people, and history.&#8221;</p><p style=3D"colo=

">But Indigenous art isn&#8217;t art because it was made by a talented arti=
st. It&#8217;s art because of the role plays in Pueblo life. &#8220;[E]ven =
in its finished form, pottery does not inherently possess life by simply be=
ing,&#8221; Aguilar adds. &#8220;In Pueblo ontologies, people give meaning =
and voice to pottery, and it becomes a part of our world through consecrate=
d use in Pueblo society.&#8221;&#160;</p><p style=3D"color: rgb(64, 64, 64)=

very different worldview, the organizers of the exhibition dispensed with a=
 traditional curator and created the Pueblo Pottery Collective which compri=
ses more than 60 potters, designers, and other artists including writers an=
d poets drawn from 22 Pueblo communities in the Southwest. All are Native A=
mericans (though a few non-Native museum professionals either participated =
in or assisted the collective.) They were each asked to choose a pot from t=
he IARC vaults or the Vilcek collection and explain the importance the obje=
ct held to them. Nothing underscores the intimate and personal relationship=
s between the members of this community and their art more than this curato=
rial strategy.&#160;</p><div class=3D"captioned-image-container-static" sty=
