de of museums. The National Gallery (both wings) and the Hirshhorn lead
the pack as major art museums. But the hot ticket in town right now is the =
Pierre Bonnard exhibition at the Phillips Collection. So I made time to see=
the show and grab a quick lunch with Phillips=E2=80=99 new-ish C.E.O. and =
director, Jonathan Binstock, who explained how the Bonnard show fits into h=
is museum=E2=80=99s mission.

* Gigaweek approaches: We don=E2=80=99t have the numbers yet, but all of th=
e auctions this May will take place during the week of May 13. Last year, $=
1.8 billion in art was sold. (That=E2=80=99s why we call it Gigaweek.) This=
time around, there are no large collections on the market that require the=
ir own sales, so totals are likely to be down even further from last year. =
That caveat accepted, the auctions have been assembled =E2=80=9Cbrick by br=
ick,=E2=80=9D in the words of Sotheby=E2=80=99s David Galperin. That means =
we're likely to get more and better market indicators. Without large collec=
tions, the specialists are relying on their own market intelligence to sour=
ce and sell lots.
* There=E2=80=99s going to be a lot of art in New York for the next three w=
eeks: Before we get to the auctions, there are three important art fairs th=
at will take place in New York. =E2=80=9COur business is cyclical, and May =

hed in Hudson Yards, where Thomas Heatherwick=E2=80=99s shuttered Vessel ho=
pes to reopen later this year. A week and a day later, the much-watched Ind=
ependent opens in Tribeca, followed by TEFAF New York at the Park Avenue Ar=
mory.
* A $45 million collection of
Impressionist works at Sotheby=E2=80=99s: Sotheby=E2=80=99s is offering a s=
ingle-owner collection with works by Childe Hassam, Camille Pissarro, and C=
laude Monet along with an early Picasso bullfighting scene in their Modern =
Evening auction on May 15 ( https://www.sothebys.com/en/auction-catalogue/2=
024/modern-evening-auction-n11401?s=3Dintro&utm_campaign=3DWall+Power+-+LEA=

8d28 ). The top lots have a combined estimate of nearly $45 million, but th=
e bulk of that value lies in a Monet painting of grainstacks, titled Meules=
=C3=A0 Giverny, from 1893. Monet=E2=80=99s series of grainstacks have sold=
for increasingly high prices in recent years, culminating in the $110 mill=
ion paid by SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner in 2019. Another Meule painting m=
ade $81
million three years before. This work is not one of the series paintings. I=
t was made a couple of years later, which explains the relatively modest $3=
0 million estimate.
Another Monet once owned by John Singer Sargent, a plein air painting of tr=
ees made near Bennecourt in 1887, is being offered with a $6 million estima=
te. The work has been in this collection for nearly 40 years. Picasso=E2=80=
=99s Courses de taureaux, from 1901, has a $5 million estimate. And a Pissa=
rro landscape painting, Paysage aux Patis, Pontoise, la moisson, from 1873,=
is offered with a $2.5 million estimate.
* Klimt anti-climax: Vienna auction house im Kinsky sold a recently redisco=
vered Gustav Klimt portrait of a Miss Lieser (her exact identity is uncerta=
in ( https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/22/arts/design/klimt-sale-vienna.html?=
utm_campaign=3DWall+Power+-+LEADS+%284%2F28%2F24%29&utm_content=3DWall+Powe=
r+-+LEADS+%284%2F14%2F24%29&utm_medium=3Demail_action&utm_source=3Dcustomer=

early last week for $41 million. Tha=
t=E2=80=99s the sixth-highest auction price for a Klimt, but it remains unc=
lear whether the small regional auction house=E2=80=94Austria isn=E2=80=99t=
the most vibrant art-trading hub this century=E2=80=94was able to attract =
enough of the right bidders to make a good price. The buyer was Patti Wong,=
Sotheby=E2=80=99s former Hong Kong heavyweight who is now an advisor to so=
me of the richest collectors in Asia. But the auction itself saw little to =
no bidding.
Was money left on the table? We=E2=80=99ll know that if the work ever trade=
s publicly again. Few Klimts sell these days. Those that do go for a range =
of high prices. Dmitry Rybolovlev famously paid more than $183 million for =
Water Serpents II, which has since been resold ($170 million is the figure =
bandied about) to Rosaline Wong,
supposedly for Hong Kong=E2=80=99s embattled Joseph Lau. Last year, Klimt=
=E2=80=99s Lady With a Fan sold for $108 million in London. Patti Wong was =
also the buyer of that work (and some of the other bidders appeared to be r=
epresenting Asian clients). The year before, Paul Allen=E2=80=99s Klimt, a =
Birch Forest painting, sold for $104 million. There are now two tiers of pr=
icing for important Klimt works, the nine-figure works and a smattering of =
very good works sold at prices mostly just below $50 million. The Lieser po=
rtrait made a solid but not impressive price within that range. Since the r=
ight players in that market=E2=80=94namely, Wong=E2=80=94were present in th=
e bidding, I=E2=80=99d have to guess that the economic mood in Asia had mor=
e to do with the price than where it was sold.

White House Correspondents=E2=80=99 Dinner weekend gave me the perfect excu=
se to duck in at the Phillips Collection to see Bonnard=E2=80=99s Worlds, a=
rare show of Pierre Bonnard=E2=80=99s paintings, and the Phillips=E2=80=99=
biggest show in 20 years. I couldn=E2=80=99t stop by the show without havi=
ng lunch with Jonathan Binstock, the director and C.E.O. of the Phillips Co=
llection, who is now beginning his second year in the role.
Bonnard=E2=80=99s market appeal has waned in recent years. His colorful wor=
k is more associated with the aftereffects of Impressionism and early Moder=
n movements, even though there are a range of Contemporary artists who work=
with color palettes akin to his. When Paul Allen=E2=80=99s art was sold a =
year and a half ago, his prized Bonnard=E2=80=94Deux corbeilles de fruits, =
from 1935=E2=80=94made $6.66 million. That might seem like a
strong price. But Allen had purchased the work for $8.5 million in 2006. Wh=
en you adjust for inflation, the painting lost half its value in 16 years. =
(Though there was a record auction price of $19.5 million made for one of h=
is large terrace views just five years ago.)
Despite being somewhat out of favor, Bonnard has been gaining visibility in=
museum and gallery shows over the last half-dozen years. Bonnard=E2=80=99s=
Worlds was organized by the Kimbell in Fort Worth after that museum=E2=80=
=99s 2018 acquisition of the painter=E2=80=99s large Landscape at Le Cannet=
, from 1928. The Kimbell wanted to put on a show that would illustrate the =
quality of its acquisition and the importance of the work. But museum time =
runs a bit slower, especially when a pandemic intervenes. It takes a while =
to get loans from museums like the Phillips, the National Gallery, and the =
Mus=C3=A9e d=E2=80=99Orsay. Several of the works included in the show at th=
e Phillips were also in another Bonnard show,
Pierre Bonnard: The Colour of Memory, that was at the Tate Modern in London=
in 2019. (Museum shows are also a way for collectors to communicate their =
status. For instance, private equity investor Christopher Flowers and his w=
ife are identified as the owners of the Paul Allen painting, which is on di=
splay here.)

If a museum like the Kimbell wants to put on a show of Bonnard=E2=80=99s wo=
rk, it has to get in touch with the Phillips Collection. =E2=80=9CAfter all=
, we have more than 30 works by Bonnard and the finest collection of his pa=
intings in the world,=E2=80=9D Binstock told me. Although I wasn=E2=80=99t =
inclined to contradict, he preempted me by adding, =E2=80=9CYes, that=E2=80=
=99s a fair statement.=E2=80=9D The strength of their holdings gave the Phi=
llips the opportunity to partner with the Kimbell to organize the show.
An intimate museum like the Phillips can only organize a show on the scale =
of Bonnard=E2=80=99s Worlds on a manageable rhythm of =E2=80=9Cperhaps ever=
y two years.=E2=80=9D All museums, Binstock says, are facing cost increases=
of 20 percent =E2=80=9Cacross the board.=E2=80=9D Adding more visitor traf=
fic won=E2=80=99t cover the costs simply because the museum, still housed p=
artially in the Duncan
Phillips mansion, has small galleries. There=E2=80=99s a physical limit to =
the number of visitors the museum can accommodate. =E2=80=9CA well-attended=
show lifts revenue lines across the institution,=E2=80=9D Binstock said. =
=E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s not just about ticket sales. It=E2=80=99s about build=
ing the audience with new guests, adding new members, and reaching deeper i=
nto under-tapped segments of the population for visitorship and support.=E2=
=80=9D
To meet his budget, Binstock needs to increase his membership base. That ha=
ppens, in part, with a buzzy show like the Bonnards, on view until June 2. =
But it also happens through programming, like the adjacent single-gallery s=
how of Jennifer Bartlett=E2=80=99s In the Garden series and an installation=
of two recently conserved works by Paul C=C3=A9zanne installed alongside f=
ive other works by the artist. Like Bonnard, the Phillips has deep holdings=
of C=C3=A9zanne. The museum now thinks of both artists as =E2=80=9Cunits.=
=E2=80=9D (Jacob Lawrence,
Georgia O=E2=80=99Keeffe, and Mark Rothko are some of the other units.) =E2=
=80=9CGoing forward,=E2=80=9D the new-ish director said, =E2=80=9Cyou can e=
xpect that the Phillips will be growing its collection of units and its att=
endant family of closely associated artists.=E2=80=9D
All museums are under pressure to expand their audience in numbers and demo=
graphic range. That=E2=80=99s especially true in a city like Washington. Th=
e most important thing about the Bonnard show, however, is that =E2=80=9Cth=
e data so far indicate that we are finally on the other side of Covid,=E2=
=80=9D Binstock said. =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s taken this long. All the figure=
s are up, including visitors, new memberships, shop and caf=C3=A9 sales, an=
d even sponsorships for the show itself, which set a new fundraising record=
for a temporary exhibition at the Phillips.=E2=80=9D

a scheduling snafu opened a small three-week window in her program, a chanc=
e to catch her breath in Bentonville, Arkansas, where she=E2=80=99s visitin=
g Crystal Bridges. I caught up with her there because I wanted to check in =
on the state of McKinney=E2=80=99s market before the auction catalogs go on=
line tomorrow. Last year, two works by McKinney caused a stir
when one sold for $100,000 in March and a second cashed in at $200,000 in M=
ay. Since then, Boesky has been patrolling the waterfront. She wants to kee=
p a lid on secondary sales as best she can.
McKinney, who goes by Joy, is a mid-career artist, but she only took up pai=
nting during the pandemic lockdown. Trained as a photographer, her painting=
s were first executed in acrylics until she switched to oils. I point that =
out only to reinforce how new McKinney is to working as a painter. She=E2=
=80=99s still experimenting and fine-tuning her skills. That said, her work=
emerged on the market in 2021 at a series of gallery shows in New York, Lo=
s Angeles, and Aspen. The last of those shows was with Boesky. The next yea=
r, Boesky showed her on 24th Street in Chelsea. Now this brief show, Quiet =
Storm, has reminded everyone of last year=E2=80=99s brief market flurry.

McKinney paints intimate scenes of Black women in ambiguous domestic settin=
gs. Her subjects often seem to be caught in a brief moment between some oth=
er narrative. McKinney isn=E2=80=99t a prolific painter but she=E2=80=99s w=
orking at a driving pace, motivated more by a fear of stopping than a carry=
ing momentum. She had just finished work for her first museum exhibition, c=
urrently up at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo ( https://fsrr.org/mo=
stre/danielle-mckinney-fly-on-the-wall/?utm_campaign=3DWall+Power+-+LEADS+%=
284%2F28%2F24%29&utm_content=3DWall+Power+-+LEADS+%284%2F14%2F24%29&utm_med=
ium=3Demail_action&utm_source=3Dcustomer.io&utm_term=3Df6c60615e3d301d48d28=
) in Italy, when Boesky discovered the schedule gap at her 24th Street gal=
lery. Despite Boesky encouraging McKinney to rest, the artist plunged ahead=
, making another dozen works that Boesky
could show at the same time as the exhibit in Italy.
With asking prices ranging from $25,000 to $90,000, there=E2=80=99s not a h=
igh barrier for buyers. That doesn=E2=80=99t mean Boesky will sell to anyon=
e who asks, even her own best clients. She needs work to go into as many mu=
seums as possible=E2=80=94which will establish McKinney=E2=80=99s reputatio=
n=E2=80=94so she has to hold paintings aside for them. So far, 17 museums h=
ave acquired works including the Buffalo AKG, Dallas Museum of Art, Hirshho=
rn in D.C., Houston=E2=80=99s MFA, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Ste=
delijk in Amsterdam. After the museums come good clients who have supported=
Boesky in the past. Boesky will also look for collectors she believes will=
really stick with the artist.
With the show now closed, Boesky will learn how successful she=E2=80=99s be=
en at tamping down McKinney=E2=80=99s market. If one of the auction houses =
has persuaded the owner of one of her works to consign, we could see more p=
rices at auction well above the
primary prices. That, in turn, might spur more early collectors to break ra=
nks.
Boesky wants to keep things from getting out of hand at least until the art=
ist has established herself with deep enough demand to maintain stable pric=
es even through market downturns. The goal is to be long-term greedy. The s=
uccess of Quiet Storm hasn=E2=80=99t really helped matters. Boesky thinks i=
t used to take 10 years to bring an artist from a strong debut to a stable,=
high-value market. But with the way that Instagram has increased the visib=
ility of artists, Boesky thinks the cycle is now down to three years.

e dealer who will be hitting refresh on the auction websites is <b>Marianne=
Boesky</b>. Her show of <b>Danielle McKinney</b>=E2=80=99s new work that c=
losed on Saturday has been all over Instagram. Boesky has been trying to im=
pose order on McKinney=E2=80=99s market since two works sold last year for =

blicly again. Few Klimts sell these days. Those that do go for a range of h=
igh prices. <b>Dmitry Rybolovlev</b> famously paid more than $183 million f=
or <i>Water Serpents II</i>, which has since been resold ($170 million is t=
he figure bandied about) to <b>Rosaline Wong</b>,
supposedly for Hong Kong=E2=80=99s embattled <b>Joseph Lau</b>. Last year, =
Klimt=E2=80=99s <i>Lady With a Fan</i> sold for $108 million in London. Pat=
ti Wong was also the buyer of that work (and some of the other bidders appe=
ared to be representing Asian clients). The year before, <b>Paul Allen</b>=
=E2=80=99s Klimt, a <i>Birch Forest</i> painting, sold for $104 million. Th=
ere are now two tiers of pricing for important Klimt works, the nine-figure=
works and a smattering of very good works sold at prices mostly just below=
$50 million. The Lieser portrait made a solid but not impressive price wit=

ondents=E2=80=99 Dinner weekend gave me the perfect excuse to duck in at th=
e Phillips Collection to see <i>Bonnard=E2=80=99s Worlds</i>, a rare show o=
f <b>Pierre Bonnard</b>=E2=80=99s paintings, and the Phillips=E2=80=99 bigg=
est show in 20 years. I couldn=E2=80=99t stop by the show without having lu=
nch with <b>Jonathan Binstock</b>, the director and C.E.O. of the Phillips =
Collection, who is now beginning his second year in the role. <br/><br/>Bon=
nard=E2=80=99s market appeal has waned in recent years. His colorful work i=
s more associated with the aftereffects of Impressionism and early Modern m=
ovements, even though there are a range of Contemporary artists who work wi=
th color palettes akin to his. When <b>Paul Allen</b>=E2=80=99s art was sol=
d a year and a half ago, his prized Bonnard=E2=80=94<i>Deux corbeilles de f=
ruits</i>, from 1935=E2=80=94made $6.66 million. That might seem like a
strong price. But Allen had purchased the work for $8.5 million in 2006. Wh=
en you adjust for inflation, the painting lost half its value in 16 years. =
(Though there was a record auction price of $19.5 million made for one of h=
is large terrace views just five years ago.)<br/><br/>Despite being somewha=
t out of favor, Bonnard has been gaining visibility in museum and gallery s=
hows over the last half-dozen years. <i>Bonnard=E2=80=99s Worlds</i> was or=
ganized by the Kimbell in Fort Worth after that museum=E2=80=99s 2018 acqui=
sition of the painter=E2=80=99s large <i>Landscape at Le Cannet</i>, from 1=
928. The Kimbell wanted to put on a show that would illustrate the quality =
of its acquisition and the importance of the work. But museum time runs a b=
it slower, especially when a pandemic intervenes. It takes a while to get l=
oans from museums like the Phillips, the National Gallery, and the Mus=C3=
=A9e d=E2=80=99Orsay. Several of the works included in the show at the Phil=
lips were also in another Bonnard show,
<i>Pierre Bonnard: The Colour of Memory</i>, that was at the Tate Modern in=
London in 2019. (Museum shows are also a way for collectors to communicate=
their status. For instance, private equity investor <b>Christopher Flowers=

museum like the Phillips can only organize a show on the scale of <i>Bonnar=

en</i> series and an installation of two recently conserved works by <b>Pau=
l C=C3=A9zanne</b> installed alongside five other works by the artist. Like=
Bonnard, the Phillips has deep holdings of C=C3=A9zanne. The museum now th=

g snafu opened a small three-week window in her program, a chance to catch =
her breath in Bentonville, Arkansas, where she=E2=80=99s visiting Crystal B=
ridges. I caught up with her there because I wanted to check in on the stat=
e of McKinney=E2=80=99s market before the auction catalogs go online tomorr=
ow. Last year, two works by McKinney caused a stir
when one sold for $100,000 in March and a second cashed in at $200,000 in M=
ay. Since then, Boesky has been patrolling the waterfront. She wants to kee=
p a lid on secondary sales as best she can.<br/><br/>McKinney, who goes by =
Joy, is a mid-career artist, but she only took up painting during the pande=
mic lockdown. Trained as a photographer, her paintings were first executed =
in acrylics until she switched to oils. I point that out only to reinforce =
how new McKinney is to working as a painter. She=E2=80=99s still experiment=
ing and fine-tuning her skills. That said, her work emerged on the market i=
n 2021 at a series of gallery shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Aspen. Th=
e last of those shows was with Boesky. The next year, Boesky showed her on =
24th Street in Chelsea. Now this brief show, <i>Quiet Storm</i>, has remind=
ed everyone of last year=E2=80=99s brief market flurry. <br/></td>

ered the schedule gap at her 24th Street gallery. Despite Boesky encouragin=
g McKinney to rest, the artist plunged ahead, making another dozen works th=

could show at the same time as the exhibit in Italy. <br/><br/>With asking =
prices ranging from $25,000 to $90,000, there=E2=80=99s not a high barrier =
for buyers. That doesn=E2=80=99t mean Boesky will sell to anyone who asks, =
even her own best clients. She needs work to go into as many museums as pos=
sible=E2=80=94which will establish McKinney=E2=80=99s reputation=E2=80=94so=
she has to hold paintings aside for them. So far, 17 museums have acquired=
works including the Buffalo AKG, Dallas Museum of Art, Hirshhorn in D.C., =
Houston=E2=80=99s MFA, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Stedelijk in Am=
sterdam. After the museums come good clients who have supported Boesky in t=
he past. Boesky will also look for collectors she believes will really stic=
k with the artist.<br/><br/>With the show now closed, Boesky will learn how=
successful she=E2=80=99s been at tamping down McKinney=E2=80=99s market. I=
f one of the auction houses has persuaded the owner of one of her works to =
consign, we could see more prices at auction well above the
primary prices. That, in turn, might spur more early collectors to break ra=
nks. <br/><br/>Boesky wants to keep things from getting out of hand at leas=
t until the artist has established herself with deep enough demand to maint=
ain stable prices even through market downturns. The goal is to be long-ter=
m greedy. The success of <i>Quiet Storm</i> hasn=E2=80=99t really helped ma=
tters. Boesky thinks it used to take 10 years to bring an artist from a str=
ong debut to a stable, high-value market. But with the way that Instagram h=
as increased the visibility of artists, Boesky thinks the cycle is now down=
