Suzanne Valadon at Van Ham
Suzanne Valadon=E2=80=99s life story reads like a drama of self-determinati=
on. Born to an unmarried laundress, she taught herself to draw and paint. S=
he used her access to artists as model for Berthe Morisot, Henri Toulouse-L=
autrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Pierre-C=C3=A9cile Puvis de Chavannes to =
learn her craft as a painter. Friends with Edgar Degas, lover of Erik Satie=
, she married a stockbroker which allowed her to paint full time. After 13 =
years, she left him for a friend of her son who was half her age. Although =
she painted in several styles and different compositions, her hand was dist=
inctive and her depiction of the nudes, especially female nudes, was ground=
-breaking. Over the last three years, seven of her top ten prices were achi=
eved at auction. All but one of those prices=E2=80=94ranging from $138,600 =
to $475,000=E2=80=94were paid for female nudes. A nude by the artist, Nu au=
paysage from 1923, was sold for $226,800 last November. It had previously =
been auctioned 20 years earlier for $58,000. Van Ham, the German auction ho=
use, will offer this depiction, above, of the gardens at her home in Montma=
rtre on November 29th in Cologne. A similar work sold for $120,000 a decade=
