This Vitamin Startup Launched A Fake Company First So The Real Company Could
Flourish 🕵
We meet 100s of fledgling entrepreneurs each month and we're always telling
them to start small and prove their business idea first. We hadn't thought
of this though.
In a highly regulated industry, the founders of vitamin supplement business
Care/of knew launching a minimum viable product wasn't possible. So they
made one up instead.
Founder Craig Elbert wanted to launch his health supplement business in the
textbook startup way; start lean, launch fast, iterate fast.
The problem was that the industry in question was federally regulated.
Elbert and his co-founder, Akash Shah, knew they'd need to have a
squeaky-clean supply chain in place before opening up sales to customers. On
top of that, their company required particular care in building a friendly
brand, since they would be selling products directly to consumers. All this
considered, launching a minimum viable product and getting a test out to
customers wasn't remotely possible.
"Check Out My FMVP"
His solution? Create a Fake MVP. It would serve as his minimum viable
product--even if it wasn't exactly his real product.
Elbert called a meeting at which members of the team threw out ideas for
fake names. Within an hour they landed on "Beets Vitamins." They mocked up a
logo and a website similar in structure and wording to what they'd drafted
for Care/of. Then they invited friends to visit BeetsVitamins.com.
The "company" allegedly sold personalised vitamin and supplement packs to
individuals, based on their age, goals, diet, and lifestyle. "Get
personalised daily vitamin packs built for your life, shipped for free, and
delivered to your door each month starting at $20," the site read. It
directed individuals to a two-minute health survey, to help them customize
their vitamin packs.
None of it was real, of course. Beets didn't sell vitamins.
But Care/of would. The friends and family who tested Beets were aware they
couldn't make purchases, but they took a health quiz on the site, and
interacted with a company page and ads on Facebook, allowing Elbert and
Shah's team to watch and learn from their behaviour.
The Real Company
The experiment lasted for only a few months but yielded valuable data that
helped enable Elbert to put together $3 million in funding. With that, and
after hiring two vitamin supply-chain insiders, the company formally
launched TakeCareof.com

, and a real Facebook page. It opened up the quiz, and vitamin-pack
customization, to everyone.
Today, the company has 45 corporate employees and brought in an additional
$14 million in venture capital funding in mid-2017.

told us how he focused on these two factors when rebranding his company.
"Choosing a name for a business can be one of the most important decisions a
founder has to make. Two years after starting our business under a different
name, we realised just how important a name can be.
Alex and I met when we worked in a café in the Cotswolds, where we both
became obsessed with speciality coffee.
Our first name, 'Antler & Bird', was supposed to be representative of the
Cotswolds, which was where we both grew up. The name was thought up
impulsively and without much reasoning. Our choice started to become
problematic when we were repeatedly asked to spell it out over the phone. It
got to a point where we were embarrassed to say our own name, which was an
obvious signal that the business should be changed immediately."
Rebranding
"When we decided to rename the business, we gave the decision much more
thought. We needed a name that was memorable, scalable and easy to
spell/say, as well as being true to us, our product and our mission. So we
chose 'Solo'.
The name Solo came when we were thinking of our values and beliefs. We both
agreed that we wanted to make a coffee that was just coffee and would never
sway from that. I’m half Spanish, and when ordering a black coffee in Spain
they ask for a 'café sólo, meaning 'just coffee'. I liked the simplicity and
the connotations of the word 'solo'. There is something empowering about
doing something unaccompanied.
While we had the opportunity to rename the business, we also decided to
re-evaluate our values, mission and tone of voice."
Tone of voice
When starting a business, it’s very easy to follow the behaviour and tone of
voice of businesses you look up to. We did this for a while, but at some
point it starts to feel insincere. From then on, we decided to do everything
as true to us as possible."

In a highly regulated industry, the founders of vitamin supplement =
business Care/of knew launching a minimum viable product wasn't =
possible. So they made one up instead. <br>

Founder Craig Elbert wanted to launch his health supplement business in =
the textbook startup way; start lean, launch fast, iterate =
fast.<br>

The problem was that the industry in question was federally regulated. =

month starting at $20," the site read. It directed individuals to a =
two-minute health survey, to help them customize their vitamin =
packs.</p>
