a crescendo. But so, too, is the run-up to the November tentpole auctions =
in New York. More and more lots are being announced, and I have some of the=
m for you this evening.
I=E2=80=99m also looking at the market for Tom Wesselmann, whom the Fondati=
on Louis Vuitton chose for a major retrospective to coincide with Art Basel=
Paris this year. Many of us who saw the show were struck by its obvious in=
tent to place Wesselmann among the pantheon of top contemporary artists=E2=
=80=94and showcase how he inspired a diverse range of his peers.
One of the reasons for the show, I=E2=80=99m told, was that the Fondation L=
ouis Vuitton has significant holdings of Wesselmann. In his preface to the =
show=E2=80=99s catalog, LVMH
chairman Bernard Arnault wrote of his own taste for the artist=E2=80=99s wo=
rk: =E2=80=9CMy initial attraction to Tom Wesselmann=E2=80=99s paintings wa=
s purely instinctive=E2=80=94I found myself drawn to his exceptional sense =
of composition. =E2=80=A6 Then my taste for his work grew around his abilit=
y to reinvent classical painting in the context of his time.=E2=80=9D
There=E2=80=99s a sense that the younger Arnaults enjoy playing the art-tra=
ding game, but I=E2=80=99ll leave that kremlinology to my partner Lauren Sh=

The Fondation Louis Vuitton is staging an ambitious, poppy retrospective of=
the sex-obsessed Midwestern artist=E2=80=94complete with contextual suppor=
t from Warhols and Lichtensteins=E2=80=94to make the case that Wesselmann d=
oes matter, even if he=E2=80=99s not easy to sell. The Mugrabis, one of the=
biggest holders of his art, are betting on a turnaround.

There was a bit of light-hearted eye-rolling after the Fondation Louis Vuit=
ton launched its Tom Wesselmann retrospective in Paris the other week. One =
industry writer, in particular, thought she was being naughty by telling he=
r readers that some of the works on display might be up for sale. The joke,=
of course, is that you can hardly give away a Tom Wesselmann these days. M=
aybe it=E2=80=99s the prevalence of uncomfortably explicit nudes; or his fa=
scination with smoking; or what appears to be a fetish for nipples and toes=
; or his habit of painting gargantuan still lifes that can only really be d=
