Paul Benney=E2=80=99s digital painting Element explores his ongoing intere=
st in religious and alchemical iconography of the Renaissance and later al=
ongside contemporary symbology. Using contemporary digital software to adj=
ust the painted surface=2C he gives unexpected life and dimension to tradi=
tional 2D imagery. This uncanny effect also mirrors some of the alchemical=
practices of the Middle Ages that were rooted in the exploration of the u=
nknown.
Benney=E2=80=99s continuing collaboration with Nitin Sawhney can be heard=
as the soundtrack to this new work. It references the children=E2=80=99s=
wind up merry-go-round and simultaneously takes us to a darker place of e=
xistential foreboding.

he alchemical practices of the Middle Ages that were rooted in the explora=
tion of the unknown.</p>
