There is a growing appetite to discover another layer of artists from the h=
igh point of abstract painting. As the market witnessed in 2022 with the ra=
pid rise of Lynne Drexler, collectors are looking for names to rediscover. =
This may not have been the motive behind a show=E2=80=94Roma New York, 1953=
-64=E2=80=94 that has just opened at David Zwirner Gallery in New York. Yet=
the practical effect is the same. Art advisors, museum curators and collec=
tors are being offered a forgotten or alternative history of high modernism=
and its successors.
=E2=80=9CThe show is about mutual discovery,=E2=80=9D says David Leiber, th=
e Zwirner partner who is also the curator, =E2=80=9CItalian artists seeing =
American artists come to Rome and Roman artists coming to New York in the 1=
950s=E2=80=94and how they both influenced each other.=E2=80=9D
Indeed, the show which features 26 artists and 73 works mixes the biggest n=
ames in 20th Century art with a roster of less familiar names. Some like Af=
ro and Conrad Marca-Relli were bigger names when they were active painters.=
Others, like Carla Accardi, Piero Dorazio, Gastone Novelli and Mario Schif=
ano are primed for re-evaluation from the market and, possibly, art history=
.
Rome and the Italian abstract painters who congregated there were not alway=
s as obscure as they might seem today. Leiber, who was inspired by a 1993 e=
xhibition in New York curated by Germano Celant, points out that Rome was t=
he first city in Europe to recognize the importance of post-war American ar=
t. During the period the exhibition covers which is slightly compressed fro=
m Celant=E2=80=99s own timeframe, artists like Philip Guston, Cy Twombly an=
d Robert Rauchenberg went to Rome to travel, work and meet Italian artists =
like Alberto Burri.
In the immediate aftermath of World War 2, Europe struggled with the conseq=
uences of Fascism and its catastrophic failure. Italy, with its strong Comm=
unist party and fragile postwar economy, became a focal point of American e=
conomic diplomacy. Through the Marshall Plan and spending unleashed by the =
Korean War, Italy witnessed an economic rebirth in the period from 1948 to =
1952. A burgeoning consumer economy and the concomitant expansion of mass c=
ulture helped Rome become a Mecca for Italian artists much the way New York=
had become one for Americans. Some of those artists, like Burri, were retu=
rning to Rome from America where they had been held in prisoner of war camp=
s. Celant believed that the United States offered many of these artists a c=
ultural path out of the cul-de-sac of a discredited Fascism and back toward=
democratic values and internationalism. The US government actively and agg=
ressively promoted this idea as a counter-weight to the strong pull of Comm=
unism among European intellectuals.

It wasn=E2=80=99t only a battle for hearts and minds, dollars (and Lira) we=
re up for grabs. In New York and Rome, a clutch of galleries emerged that b=
egan to share artists. Afro Balsadella had his first show in New York in 19=
49. In the 15 years following, he would have seven more. His regular trips =
to the US put him in touch with the leading lights of the New York school, =
like Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. Back in Rome Afro became an importa=
nt source of information to local galleries about which artists had potenti=
al to be the next stars; and he would also become a welcoming attraction fo=
r visiting artists.
Burri was the other Italian artist who found immediate success in the New W=
orld. So it is no surprise that Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly would se=
ek him out when they were in Rome in 1952. Burri and Rauschenberg are very =
different artists; however, at the time both were experimenting with simila=
r materials and new approaches to abstraction. Twombly=E2=80=99s Italian tr=
ajectory would be even more pronounced. He would return five years later to=
establish roots that would last another half century.
De Kooning arrived in Rome in 1959 like a movie star. At the height of his=
fame and recognition for Abstract Expressionism, he spent six months in th=
e city accompanied by Jackson Pollock=E2=80=99s former girlfriend, the Eliz=
abeth Taylor-like Ruth Kligman. In truth, de Kooning was in Rome to mollify=
Klingman but his presence lit up the community of artists and Rome=E2=80=
=99s high society.
In truth, it wasn=E2=80=99t a very productive period for de Kooning, though=
he borrowed Afro=E2=80=99s studio and made works on paper while he was the=
re. Working time had to be squeezed in around the socializing. Long boozy l=
unches were spent at the artists=E2=80=99 hangout Caf=C3=A9 Rosati. Dinners=
were a moveable feast of Conrad Marca-Relli, Dorazio, Twombly, Afro, Burri=
and Salvatore Scarpita (all represented in the Zwirner show.)
Despite the star power of de Kooning, Kline, Guston, Burri, Rauschenberg an=
d Twombly, the show is meant to feature the supporting cast of Italian arti=
sts. Many of their markets have been spotty or hard-pressed to build moment=
um. Zwirner=E2=80=99s stature as a global gallery may help change that even=
as it fights an auction tape that hasn=E2=80=99t always been supportive of=
some of these artists and works. LiveArt=E2=80=99s database shows some of =
these losing ground over time while others have simply not gained much trac=
tion. As last year=E2=80=99s Lynne Drexler phenomenon proved, traction can =
seemingly come at any time.
Instead of taking a bet on one artist, Leiber clearly believes an exhibitio=
n like this one is the first step in setting off a chain reaction. He hints=
that a Mario Schifano show is in the works and confides that he=E2=80=99s =
been walking museum people through the show and hopes it will spark more fo=
cused follow ups. That=E2=80=99s the one of the ways markets are made in th=
e art world.
=E2=80=9CWhat I wanted to do with this exhibition,=E2=80=9D Leiber says, =
=E2=80=9Dwas borrow and find the absolute best examples that have passed th=
rough canonical galleries, ones that have the most extraordinary provenance=
. The works in our show represent the very best from the best period, in my=
view, where the works resonated and had the most influence.=E2=80=9D

behind a show=E2=80=94<span style=3D"font-weight: bold;"><em>Roma New York=
, 1953-64</em></span>=E2=80=94 that has just opened at <span style=3D"font-=
weight: bold;">David Zwirner Gallery</span> in New York. Yet the practical =
effect is the same. Art advisors, museum curators and collectors are being =
offered a forgotten or alternative history of high modernism and its succes=
sors. </p>

alian abstract painters who congregated there were not always as obscure as=
they might seem today. Leiber, who was inspired by a 1993 exhibition in Ne=
w York curated by <span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Germano Celant</span>,=
points out that Rome was the first city in Europe to recognize the importa=
nce of post-war American art. During the period the exhibition covers which=
is slightly compressed from Celant=E2=80=99s own timeframe, artists like <=
span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Philip</span> <span style=3D"font-weight:=
bold;">Guston</span>, <span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Cy</span> <span s=
tyle=3D"font-weight: bold;">Twombly</span> and <span style=3D"font-weight: =
bold;">Robert</span> <span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Rauchenberg</span> =
went to Rome to travel, work and meet Italian artists like <span style=3D"f=
ont-weight: bold;">Alberto</span> <span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Burri<=

e aftermath of World War 2, Europe struggled with the consequences of Fasci=
sm and its catastrophic failure. Italy, with its strong Communist party and=
fragile postwar economy, became a focal point of American economic diploma=
cy. Through the Marshall Plan and spending unleashed by the Korean War, Ita=
ly witnessed an economic rebirth in the period from 1948 to 1952. A burgeon=
ing consumer economy and the concomitant expansion of mass culture helped R=
ome become a Mecca for Italian artists much the way New York had become one=
for Americans. Some of those artists, like Burri, were returning to Rome f=
rom America where they had been held in prisoner of war camps. Celant belie=
ved that the United States offered many of these artists a cultural path ou=
t of the cul-de-sac of a discredited Fascism and back toward democratic val=
ues and internationalism. The US government actively and aggressively promo=
ted this idea as a counter-weight to the strong pull of Communism among Eur=

>It wasn=E2=80=99t only a battle for hearts and minds, dollars (and Lira) w=
ere up for grabs. In New York and Rome, a clutch of galleries emerged that =
began to share artists. Afro Balsadella had his first show in New York in 1=
949. In the 15 years following, he would have seven more. His regular trips=
to the US put him in touch with the leading lights of the New York school,=
like <span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Willem de Kooning</span> and <span=
style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Franz</span> <span style=3D"font-weight: bold=
;">Kline</span>. Back in Rome Afro became an important source of informatio=
n to local galleries about which artists had potential to be the next stars=
; and he would also become a welcoming attraction for visiting artists.&nbs=
p; </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%"> </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%">Burri was the o=
ther Italian artist who found immediate success in the New World. So it is =
no surprise that Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly would seek him out when=
they were in Rome in 1952. Burri and Rauschenberg are very different artis=
ts; however, at the time both were experimenting with similar materials and=
new approaches to abstraction. Twombly=E2=80=99s Italian trajectory would =
be even more pronounced. He would return five years later to establish root=
s that would last another half century.</p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%"> </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%">De Kooning arri=
ved in Rome in 1959 like a movie star. At the height of his fame and =
recognition for <span style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Abstract Expressionism</=
span>, he spent six months in the city accompanied by <span style=3D"font-w=
eight: bold;">Jackson Pollock</span>=E2=80=99s former girlfriend, the Eliza=
beth Taylor-like Ruth Kligman. In truth, de Kooning was in Rome to mollify =
Klingman but his presence lit up the community of artists and Rome=E2=80=99=
s high society. </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%"> </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%">In truth, it wa=
sn=E2=80=99t a very productive period for de Kooning, though he borrowed Af=
ro=E2=80=99s studio and made works on paper while he was there. Working tim=
e had to be squeezed in around the socializing. Long boozy lunches were spe=
nt at the artists=E2=80=99 hangout Caf=C3=A9 Rosati. Dinners were a moveabl=
e feast of Conrad Marca-Relli, Dorazio, Twombly, Afro, Burri and Salvatore =
Scarpita (all represented in the Zwirner show.) </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%"> </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%">Despite the sta=
r power of de Kooning, Kline, Guston, Burri, Rauschenberg and Twombly, the =
show is meant to feature the supporting cast of Italian artists. Many of th=
eir markets have been spotty or hard-pressed to build momentum. Zwirner=E2=
=80=99s stature as a global gallery may help change that even as it fights =
an auction tape that hasn=E2=80=99t always been supportive of some of these=
artists and works. LiveArt=E2=80=99s database shows some of these losing g=
round over time while others have simply not gained much traction. As last =
year=E2=80=99s Lynne Drexler phenomenon proved, traction can seemingly come=
at any time. </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%"> </p>
<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%">Instead of taki=
ng a bet on one artist, Leiber clearly believes an exhibition like this one=
is the first step in setting off a chain reaction. He hints that a <span s=
tyle=3D"font-weight: bold;">Mario Schifano</span> show is in the works and =
confides that he=E2=80=99s been walking museum people through the show and =
hopes it will spark more focused follow ups. That=E2=80=99s the one of the =
ways markets are made in the art world. </p>

<p style=3D"mso-line-height-rule:exactly; line-height:175%">=E2=80=9CWhat I=
wanted to do with this exhibition,=E2=80=9D Leiber says, =E2=80=9Dwas borr=
ow and find the absolute best examples that have passed through canonical g=
alleries, ones that have the most extraordinary provenance. The works in ou=
r show represent the very best from the best period, in my view, where the =
works resonated and had the most influence.=E2=80=9D</p></div></div></td></=
