Should you apply to pitch on Dragons' Den?
The flagship show from the BBC is open for applications for their 17th
series, and they have asked us to let our community know they're on the hunt
for entrepreneurs with investment-ready businesses and nerves of steel! I
should know, I've done it myself.
For those who haven't seen the show, The Dragon's Den gives UK based
entrepreneurs the chance to pitch for equity investment in their business
from the 5 "Dragons", independent angel investors, pictured above. It's an
intense experience and can result in investment from 1 or more of the
Dragons into your startup in return for an equity share. You have the chance
to gain not only their money, but expertise, profile and contacts alongside.
At the same time, the application process can be long and require a lot of
your time and efforts. You could even end up rejected for investment in
front of millions of viewers!
Whilst applying to the Den is free, and we do encourage businesses that have
a strong business plan and proven track record, we think that it's worth
bearing in mind that there are other ways of raising private finance, and
that the time might not be right for getting investment from the famous
Dragons.

Chantal Cooke is an award-winning journalist and broadcaster – turned PR
guru. She has worked as journalist / presenter for the BBC, commercial
radio, national newspapers and magazines for over 25 years. She has reported
from Bosnia and Northern Ireland, and written travel articles for a variety
of publications including the Independent on Sunday. In 2002 she set up the
UK’s first ethical radio station; PASSION for the PLANET. The station, which
broadcast on DAB and via the Internet, picked up a number of awards and
attracted an audience of over 100k. During that time Chantal interviewed
over 6,000 people. In 2010 Chantal founded Panpathic Communications – a
boutique PR agency specialising in working with small business and authors.
