Francis Bacon=E2=80=99s Landscape near Malabata, Tangier from 1963 featurin=
g a portrait of Peter Lacy, Bacon=E2=80=99s former lover who died at the ti=
me of his first retrospective in 1962, will be offered at Christie=E2=80=99=
s with a =C2=A315m estimate. The painting has appeared in 32 exhibitions of=
Bacon=E2=80=99s work, including the landmark retrospective at the Grand Pa=
lais in 1971 (days before which another of Bacon=E2=80=99s partners, George=
Dyer, also died.)
Roald Dahl owned this painting until he divorced his wife Patricia Neal. Sh=
e later sold it in 1985 when it made the record price for Bacon at auction.

Christie=E2=80=99s to Offer 10 Boetti Works Across His Career in London
The market for works by Alighiero Boetti=E2=80=99s work has been surging fo=
r several years. At the top end, all of his highest prices were set at auct=
ion within the last three years. Throughout the wide range of works the Art=
e Povera artist created there has also been strong price appreciation at se=
veral price points. Christie=E2=80=99s has responded by stocking their Marc=
h sale with 10 works across that oeuvre ranging from a small Manifesto esti=
mated at =C2=A38,000 to a Cinque x cinque venticinque with a =C2=A3550,000 =
estimate and a Tutto with a =C2=A3400,000 estimate to a Mettere al mondo il=
mondo with an estimate at =C2=A3650,000.

Antwaun Sargent Launches Another Thematic Show for Gagosian at Frieze Los A=
ngeles with Follow-Up Exhibitions in LA & Hong Kong
In 2021, Antwaun Sargent joined Gagosian Gallery and launched his program t=
here with a group show called Social Works focusing on =E2=80=9Cthe relatio=
nship between space=E2=80=94personal, public, institutional, and psychic=E2=
=80=94and Black social practice.=E2=80=9D Citing the urgency of the moment=
=E2=80=94a post-pandemic-stressed New York City=E2=80=94the show declared i=
ts artists =E2=80=9Cunited by a conscious engagement with today=E2=80=99s c=
ultural moment.=E2=80=9D For many reasons, including that=C2=A0 the world=
=E2=80=99s most famous art gallery was hosting an emphatic group show of Bl=
ack artists at its flagship location curated by a man who was suddenly at t=
he center of everything art-related, the show was mobbed with the gallery o=
ften overflowing onto 24th street with lines of visitors. That Fall, Sargen=
t reprised the show with Social Works II, the same idea executed in London =
with different works but the same sense of the show being a seminal event.=
=C2=A0
Three years later, Gagosian announced this week that Sargent would launch a=
three-part exhibition called Social Abstraction first at Frieze Los Angele=
s and later at Gagosian=E2=80=99s Beverly Hills gallery this Summer and, fi=
nally, in Hong Kong this Fall.=C2=A0
Some of the artists who appeared in the first show, Lauren Halsey and Rick =
Lowe come to mind, are now represented by Sargent and Gagosian. Others, lik=
e Theaster Gates who is represented by White Cube, have works on the Frieze=
booth alongside artists like Derrick Adams and Cy Gavin whom Sargent now r=
epresents as well.=C2=A0
Even though the Social Works show appeared near the apex of the market=E2=
=80=99s interest in Black figurative painters, the show featured a number o=
f abstract works. In this new show, Sargent wanted to explore something uni=
que about Black abstraction that he feels was present in the work of Norman=
Lewis, Sam Gilliam, Ed Clark or Barbara Chase Riboud. =E2=80=9CWhen you=E2=
=80=99re thinking about Black contributions to abstraction,=E2=80=9D Sargen=
t says, =E2=80=9Cthere=E2=80=99s always a social aspect. They=E2=80=99re al=
ways gesturing towards community=E2=80=94towards very real realities. That=
=E2=80=99s a departure from postwar abstraction at least in the way art his=
tory tells us.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0
Sargent didn=E2=80=99t have to dig very far to find this vein. His booth wi=
ll feature multiple abstract works by Rick Lowe=C2=A0 , including 22 Rhymes=
in a Row: Homage to John Outterbridge from 2023 celebrating Los Angeles ar=
tist and activist Outterbridge and Ithaka #4 also from 2023. Theaster Gates=
has a ceramic work, Vessel from 2023, on the Frieze stand. Lauren Halsey h=
as two works in the Frieze installment of Social Abstraction, an untitled w=
ork made from bright synthetic hair used for wigs and watts happening from =
2024 using her motif signs repurposing works as images and colors, in this =
case the emblematic red, green and black of Pan-African unity.=C2=A0
Derrick Adams started his practice as an abstract artist. Now best known fo=
r his faceted figurative works that evoke Cubism, the Frieze show features =
Lady with Pin and Man with Braids both made this year. Cy Gavin contributes=
two untitled works from 2023 that look at the convergence of landscape and=
abstraction.=C2=A0
The next two iterations of the show in Beverly Hills and Hong Kong will fea=
ture more artists, including names not represented by Gagosian like Amanda =
Williams and Devin B. Johnson.=C2=A0
=E2=80=9CThese group shows are important,=E2=80=9D Sargent says having lear=
ned the stark realities of art dealing as a trade over the last three years=
,=E2=80=9D in that they are able to be ideas first.=E2=80=9D Group shows gi=
ve Sargent a venue for artists whose work might not yet command the attenti=
on or prices to support a show in one of Gagosian=E2=80=99s global gallerie=
s. =E2=80=9CThis is a relatively new thing having Black artists showing in =
mega galleries,=E2=80=9D Sargent says, explaining why he=E2=80=99s eager to=
bring the third installment to Hong Kong. =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s important =
that these shows don=E2=80=99t just take place in cities with huge black co=
mmunities. I think it is important to have these artists to show in Asia so=
we can see what the conversation is around the art. These ideas are univer=
sal.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0
Is Jimmy Iovine the Godfather of LA Collectors?
Two nights before the Frieze Los Angeles vernissage on February 29th, Jimmy=
Iovine, the founder of Interscope and headphone company Beats that he buil=
t with Dr. Dre, will host an invitation-only charity auction at his home in=
LA to benefit the Iovine and Young Center for High School Education, the p=
rogram he started with Andre Young, Dr. Dre, to promote interdisciplinary e=
ducation that fuses technology with real-world experience.=C2=A0
Sotheby=E2=80=99s is conducting the auction with James Corden as auctioneer=
and bidders can participate through Sotheby=E2=80=99s auction platform onl=
ine if they don=E2=80=99t get an invite. The auction will feature 11 works =
by sought-after artists like Reggie Burrows Hodges, Noah Davis, Hilary Peci=
s, Ed Ruscha, Derek Fordjour, Chase Hall, Austyn Weiner, Ann Craven, Jennif=
er Guidi, Sayre Gomez and Rashid Johnson. Many of the works were made in th=
e opening weeks of this year.=C2=A0
The works were gathered by music producer and collector Josh Abraham, Los A=
ngeles dealer David Kordansky, and Sotheby=E2=80=99s Los Angeles-based mach=
er Jackie Wachter. Abraham, who has =E2=80=9Cproduced many records on the I=
nterscope label=E2=80=9D and had his own label =E2=80=9Cunder the Interscop=
e umbrella=E2=80=9D has known and worked with Iovine for many years.=C2=A0
In 2022, Abraham helped organize a show at LACMA celebrating the 30th anniv=
ersary of Interscope by commissioning 50 art works inspired by Interscope s=
ongs. Iovine has said that he was mentored in his art buying by super colle=
ctor and music-industry sage David Geffen. In turn, Iovine has become a cou=
nselor to younger music industry collectors like Abraham. =E2=80=9CWithin t=
he music world, there are a handful of people that are often a first phone =
call for music executives and the creative community looking to collect/inv=
est in major fine art purchases,=E2=80=9D Abraham says. =E2=80=9CJimmy has =
always been at the top of that list.=E2=80=9D =C2=A0
All of that said, we shouldn=E2=80=99t lose sight of the artists=E2=80=99 c=
ontribution here because they are doing much of the heavy lifting here to s=
upport Iovine=E2=80=99s education project. United States tax law only allow=
s the artists to get credit for the donation of the materials they used to =
make the works. Sotheby=E2=80=99s is also making a contribution by not char=
ging a Buyer=E2=80=99s Premium nor charging fees to the sellers.=C2=A0

Arianna Huffington sells Fran=C3=A7oise Gilot painting [ https://substack.c=

from the mid-40s to the mid-50s and mother of Claude and Paloma Picasso, w=
as a painter in her own right. Her career was probably truncated by the Fat=
wa Picasso issued against her after she left him and eventually wrote a boo=
k My Life with Picasso. Nevertheless, Gilot who went on to marry Jonas Salk=
(=E2=80=9CLions mate with lions,=E2=80=9D she explained) never stopped pai=
nting. Before she died last year at the age of 101, she saw her market come=
to life with record sales in 2021 of two paintings for $1.26m and $1.3m re=
spectively. Even before that, Gilot=E2=80=99s work was known to collectors =
and art historians. Her prices at auction, let alone privately, had broken =
$100,000 a decade ago. Why is all of this important? Only a desperate scene=
-stealer like Arianna Huffington could claim to the FT that she was selling=
Gilot=E2=80=99s Portrait of Genevienve with a necklace of doves from 1944 =
at Sotheby=E2=80=99s in London next month with a =C2=A3150,000 estimate be=
cause, she wants Gilot =E2=80=9Cto be more widely exposed as an artist in h=
er own right.=E2=80=9D Apparently no one told the Asian market that Gilot w=
as unrecognized as an artist when her Living Forest from 1977 sold for $274=
,000 in Shanghai in 2014 and then again in 2021 for $1.26 million in Hong K=
ong.=20
Gallery Shows Last Works by Chuck Close. Will it Repair a Reputation? [ htt=

Glimcher is giving Chuck Close a show of the artist=E2=80=99s final work. =
This is controversial because Close=E2=80=99s behavior during the last eigh=
t years of his life was colored by abrasive behavior and clouded by a diagn=
osis of dementia since 2013. In trying to explain the effect of Close=E2=80=
=99s late-in-life decline, the Times takes an odd turn: =E2=80=9CThe Close =
accusations had an immediate impact on the market, reducing public demand f=
or a once prominent artist.=E2=80=9D A brief look at Close=E2=80=99s auctio=
n prices suggests nothing of the sort. The large portraits that Close is be=
st known for reached their market peak in 2004-2006 when four of the large =
photorealistic portraits sold for prices ranging from $2.8m to $4.8m. In a =
classic market top, Gwynne from 1982 made $2.8m in May 2004. A year later, =
Eric from 1990 and John from 1971 sold for $3m and $4.8m respectively. Eigh=
teen months later, Phil from 1983 made $3.2 million. Even with those sales,=
it was rare to see Close=E2=80=99s gargantuan major works appear at auctio=
n. And the Times may have some information that the private market for Clos=
e=E2=80=99s work suffered but they haven=E2=80=99t shared it with anyone. B=
ut most people recognize that Close, for whatever reason, wasn=E2=80=99t a =
market artist. That validates Glimcher=E2=80=99s desire to see him have a f=
inal show, to close the books, as it were. The kicker to all of this is tha=

aun Sargent joined Gagosian Gallery and launched his program there with a g=
roup show called Social Works focusing on “the relationship between s=
pace—personal, public, institutional, and psychic—and Black soc=
ial practice.” Citing the urgency of the moment—a post-pandemic=
-stressed New York City—the show declared its artists “united b=
y a conscious engagement with today’s cultural moment.” For man=
y reasons, including that  the world’s most famous art gallery w=
as hosting an emphatic group show of Black artists at its flagship location=
curated by a man who was suddenly at the center of everything art-related,=
the show was mobbed with the gallery often overflowing onto 24th street wi=
th lines of visitors. That Fall, Sargent reprised the show with Social Work=
s II, the same idea executed in London with different works but the same se=
nse of the show being a seminal event. </p><p style=3D"color: rgb(64, =
64, 64); font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin: 0 0 20px 0;">Three yea=
rs later, Gagosian announced this week that Sargent would launch a three-pa=
rt exhibition called Social Abstraction first at Frieze Los Angeles and lat=
er at Gagosian’s Beverly Hills gallery this Summer and, finally, in H=
ong Kong this Fall. </p><p style=3D"color: rgb(64, 64, 64); font-size:=
16px; line-height: 26px; margin: 0 0 20px 0;">Some of the artists who appe=
ared in the first show, Lauren Halsey and Rick Lowe come to mind, are now r=
epresented by Sargent and Gagosian. Others, like Theaster Gates who is repr=
esented by White Cube, have works on the Frieze booth alongside artists lik=
e Derrick Adams and Cy Gavin whom Sargent now represents as well. </p>=

of the market’s interest in Black figurative painters, the show featu=
red a number of abstract works. In this new show, Sargent wanted to explore=
something unique about Black abstraction that he feels was present in the =
work of Norman Lewis, Sam Gilliam, Ed Clark or Barbara Chase Riboud. “=
;When you’re thinking about Black contributions to abstraction,”=
; Sargent says, “there’s always a social aspect. They’re =
always gesturing towards community—towards very real realities. That&=
#8217;s a departure from postwar abstraction at least in the way art histor=

ve to dig very far to find this vein. His booth will feature multiple abstr=

age to John Outterbridge</em><span> from 2023 celebrating Los Angeles artis=
t and activist Outterbridge and </span><em>Ithaka #4</em><span> also from 2=
023. Theaster Gates has a ceramic work, </span><em>Vessel</em><span> from 2=
023, on the Frieze stand. Lauren Halsey has two works in the Frieze install=
ment of Social Abstraction, an untitled work made from bright synthetic hai=
r used for wigs and </span><em>watts happening</em><span> from 2024 using h=
er motif signs repurposing works as images and colors, in this case the emb=

unger music industry collectors like Abraham. “Within the music world=

explain the effect of Close’s late-in-life decline, the Times takes a=
n odd turn: “The Close accusations had an immediate impact on the mar=
ket, reducing public demand for a once prominent artist.” A brief loo=
k at Close’s auction prices suggests nothing of the sort. The large p=
ortraits that Close is best known for reached their market peak in 2004-200=
6 when four of the large photorealistic portraits sold for prices ranging f=
rom $2.8m to $4.8m. In a classic market top, Gwynne from 1982 made $2.8m in=
May 2004. A year later, </span><em>Eric</em><span> from 1990 and </span><e=
m>John</em><span> from 1971 sold for $3m and $4.8m respectively. Eighteen m=
onths later, </span><em>Phil</em><span> from 1983 made $3.2 million. Even w=
ith those sales, it was rare to see Close’s gargantuan major works ap=
pear at auction. And the Times may have some information that the private m=
arket for Close’s work suffered but they haven’t shared it with=
anyone. But most people recognize that Close, for whatever reason, wasn=
