he private gallery on East 74th Street in Manhattan which seems to be takin=
g cues from the Nahmad family who similarly operate three different galleri=
es as sales outlets. The announcement also quotes Beard as saying the firm =
will =E2=80=9Cfunction like an art merchant bank.=E2=80=9D Presumably that =
refers to Level & Co. consigning works to other dealers for exhibitions and=
art fairs. Masterworks=E2=80=99s investment process would not seem to allo=
w Level & Co. to engage in art financing. The move underscores an important=
but still unresolved issue with fractional art investing: how to achieve g=
ood returns from profitable exits. Masterworks must disclose ownership of a=
ll of the works it manages for fractional owners. The establishment of Leve=
l & Co. is recognition that Masterworks=E2=80=99s provenance may not make i=
t easier to sell works at a profit.=20

Agnes Pelton=E2=80=99s visibility has been on the rise in the last several =
years first in a traveling retrospective that unfortunately arrived at the =

ow estimate, it will be the second highest price for the artist at auction =
and only the third eight-figure public sale. The quality and size of Candy =
Counter is such that it could easily attract a number of bidders. The consi=
gnors have eschewed a guarantee. Perhaps more relevant, the May season has =
15 works by Thiebaud on offer. That=E2=80=99s a substantial number when 202=
2 saw 24 public sales, the year with the second highest volume of lots for =
Thiebaud. The 15 works on offer have a combined low estimate of $25.89 mill=
ion and comprise 11 paintings and four works on paper. Nine of the works ha=
ve estimates of $1 million or more. Cakes and confections are prized in the=
Thiebaud oeuvre but the top price is for a painting of pinball machines an=
d the third highest price is for a landscape. That shines a light on landsc=

In March, a record price was paid for Richard Estes=E2=80=99s Gifts of Natu=
re from 1978 which depicts the intersection of West Houston, Bedford Street=
and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. The cityscape with little greenery gets its=
title from a flowershop in the painting. It was estimated at $400,000 and =
sold for $1.28 million with fees. Naturally, that has brought more of Estes=
work to auction this season. Five lots with a combined low estimate of $87=
5,000 are being offered. Central Park, Looking North from Belvedere Castle,=

me of the qualities that collectors look for most in the artist=E2=80=99s w=
ork (more urban, less landscape and a preference for reflective surfaces li=
ke plate glass or Staten Island Ferry windows. Is Photorealism, maligned fo=
r many years, making a comeback? Gladstone gallery just closed a show of wo=

The May art season is upon us with its gridlock of gallery openings, auctio=
n previews, Evening sales, Day sales and art fairs. The fun starts in Manha=
ttan starting on Thursday when the Independent Art Fair opens at Spring Stu=
dios in Tribeca.
One of the complaints about the surfeit of art fairs that surrounds the auc=
tions is that they can often feel like extended auction house day sales wit=
h more work by more of the same artists already popular on the secondary ma=
rket. More than a decade ago, Elizabeth Dee and Matthew Higgs thought they =
could create an alternative art fair that solved a few problems the other f=
airs were not addressing. The first was to gather galleries from around the=
country and the world that are not always present in New York as well as a=
rtists, especially indigenous artists, who are not often represented.=C2=A0
Second, for the galleries, the goal is give them access to new clients inst=
ead of hauling art to a fair only to sell to previous clients of the galler=
y. According to Dee, galleries at Independent maintain 70% new client sales=
=2E Granted, a lot of that work sells=
for prices under $10,000. But that=E2=
=80=99s the point of the Independent art fair, Dee says, to build new clien=
ts for artists who may not have strong followings.=C2=A0
The point of Independent, and it seems to be working, is to create what Dee=
calls a =E2=80=9Cconvivial atmosphere consciously scaled.=E2=80=9D Part of=
that scaling has been the build out of a website that provides access to c=
ollectors before the fair.=C2=A0

London=E2=80=99s Niru Ratnam is making its first appearance at Independent,=
one of the nearly 25% of the galleries that are new to the fair. Kimathi D=

ay sales with more work by more of the same artists already popular on the =
secondary market. More than a decade ago, Elizabeth Dee and Matthew Higgs t=
hought they could create an alternative art fair that solved a few problems=
the other fairs were not addressing. The first was to gather galleries fro=
m around the country and the world that are not always present in New York =
as well as artists, especially indigenous artists, who are not often repres=
ented. </p><p style=3D"color: #404040; font-size: 16px; line-height: 2=
6px; margin: 0 0 20px 0;">Second, for the galleries, the goal is give them =
access to new clients instead of hauling art to a fair only to sell to prev=
ious clients of the gallery. According to Dee, galleries at Independent mai=
ntain 70% new client sales. Granted, a lot of that work sells for prices un=
der $10,000. But that’s the point of the Independent art fair, Dee sa=
ys, to build new clients for artists who may not have strong followings.=

o create what Dee calls a “convivial atmosphere consciously scaled.&#=
