Marie-Th=C3=A9r=C3=A8se Walter=E2=80=99s Magic
Christie=E2=80=99s announced this morning another work for the May 11th sal=
e of 20th Century art: Pablo Picasso=E2=80=99s=C2=A0Nature morte =C3=A0 la =
fen=C3=AAtre with an unpublished estimate. The auction house expects the wo=
rk to sell for more than $40 million. The painting was made early in 1932 w=
hich would become a very important year for Picasso. Inspired by Marie-Th=
=C3=A9r=C3=A8se, Picasso would go on to make Le R=C3=AAve, Jeune fille deva=
nt un miroir, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust and Femme assise pr=C3=A8s d'une =
fen=C3=AAtre (Marie-Th=C3=A9r=C3=A8se) in 1932 (along with other paintings.=
) Those four works became exceptional market trophies: three sold for nine-=
figure prices, the fourth sits at MoMA. This work lacks the chromatic pyrot=
echnics of three of the works just cited but may still get market momentum =
from its date.=20
Basquiat=E2=80=99s Big Record
Peter Brant is selling his startling and unique Jean-Michel Basquiat work N=
ow=E2=80=99s the Time (1985) at Sotheby=E2=80=99s on May 18th. The painting=
is one of the most spare objects that Basquiat created but references the =
vein of music and Black cultural heroes that are major themes in the artist=
=E2=80=99s body of work. The work is expected to make $30 million or more. =
There are very few black-and-white Basquiats to compare the work to. None o=
f those are really comparable to the seven-foot wide Now=E2=80=99s the Time=
=2E Although we=E2=80=99ve become accustom=
ed to seeing Basquiats auction for=20=
very high prices and there are credible reports of private sales in the nin=
e figures, only 15 paintings have reached public prices of $30 million or m=
ore.=20
The Customs Inspector=E2=80=99s Flamingos
Christie=E2=80=99s will be selling Payne Whitney Middleton=E2=80=99s Henri =
Rousseau painting, Les Flamants from 1910 during the 20th Century Evening s=
ale on May 11th with an estimate of $20 million. Works by Rousseau are rare=
on the art market due simply to the small number of known paintings number=
ing as few as 240. Within that body of work there are even fewer jungle sce=
nes. =E2=80=9CThe number of privately owned paintings with provenance trace=
d to Rousseau can be counted on two hands,=E2=80=9D says Christie=E2=80=99s=
Max Carter describing the scale of the problem. =E2=80=9CAmong them there =
is only one monumental jungle vision, Les Flamants, which hung for many yea=
rs in Joan Whitney Payson=E2=80=99s living room opposite Van Gogh=E2=80=99s=
Irises.=E2=80=9D The sale of Irises, of course, was a seminal moment in th=
e creation of the modern art market in the 1980s when Australian business o=
wner Alan Bond paid a record price of nearly $54 million for a painting at =
auction. Later, it was revealed that Bond had bought the work with a loan f=
rom Sotheby=E2=80=99s for half of the purchase price. He eventually default=
ed on the loan. The painting is now owned by the Getty Museum in Los Angele=
s. Coming back to Rousseau, Les Flamants was painted in the last year of Ro=
usseau=E2=80=99s life. Later that same year, he painted The Dream, which is=
the last work that he completed and has become one of the central works in=
the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
Deep Cuts
The growth of the contemporary art market has crowded out attention for oth=
er collecting categories. Specific works by artists like Georgia O=E2=80=99=
Keeffe and Andrew Wyeth have recently starred in single-owner sales. Other=
works from categories like American art=E2=80=94which had its sales this w=
eek in New York=E2=80=94Old Masters and Latin American art have also been p=
romoted to marquee evening sales. But there=E2=80=99s still action in the l=
ess trafficked category sales. The sale of the Wolf Family Collection of Am=
erican art at Sotheby=E2=80=99s has already made $39 million with a series =
of live auctions still left to take place. A few noteworthy works attracted=

pens on the heels of a new $647,202 auction record for the artist made in H=

le scenes. “The number of privately owned paintings with provenance t=
raced to Rousseau can be counted on two hands,” says Christie’s=
Max Carter describing the scale of the problem. “Among them there is=
only one monumental jungle vision, </span><em>Les Flamants</em><span>, whi=
ch hung for many years in Joan Whitney Payson’s living room opposite =
Van Gogh’s </span><em>Irises.</em><span>” The sale of Irises, o=
f course, was a seminal moment in the creation of the modern art market in =
the 1980s when Australian business owner Alan Bond paid a record price of n=
early $54 million for a painting at auction. Later, it was revealed that Bo=
nd had bought the work with a loan from Sotheby’s for half of the pur=
chase price. He eventually defaulted on the loan. The painting is now owned=
