Field note =C2=B7 Bird of the day

A gull had
my chips today.

Seafront car park, cardboard tray, four seconds of looking at my phone. By =
the time I looked up there was a herring gull on the wall with most of my l=
unch and no apparent guilt about it.

Here's the part I like. Researchers at Exeter tested this properly a few ye=
ars back. They put a bag of chips on the ground and either stared straight =
at the gull or looked away. The gulls took much longer to go for the food w=
hen someone was watching, and plenty of them wouldn't come at all. They rea=
d your eyes. Mine were on a phone.

The bill is worth a look as well. That red spot near the tip is a target fo=
r the chicks. They peck at it and the parent brings food back up. Niko Tinb=
ergen worked it out with cardboard models, and later took a Nobel for that =
kind of work.

For all the noise about them, herring gulls sit on the UK red list. The col=
onies out on the cliffs have fallen away badly. The birds working the prome=
nade are the visible few of a species in trouble, which makes me softer on =
the chip business than I'd otherwise be.

Not soft enough to forgive it. But softer.
