### **The Absurd History of Smoking Banana Peels**

_The "hoax" that tricked federal officials, the FDA, mainstream newspapers=
=E2=80=94and countless psychonauts seeking a fruitful trip_

It sounds like something out of an SNL skit. =E2=80=9CThey call it souping=
=E2=80=94kids are drinking expired soup cans to get high. Every teenager is=
 doing it, and it will kill them!=E2=80=9D Bill Hader quipped in a [2013 sk=
etch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DLV9yvGGNaiQ) parodying the news=E2=
=80=99 obsession with =E2=80=9Cfrightening teen trends.=E2=80=9D It seems l=
ike every year, the media fixates on a new, imagined [threat to youth](http=
s://doubleblindmag.com/adult-psychedelic-use-increasing/), often something =
they=E2=80=99re doing =E2=80=9Cto get high.=E2=80=9D

It turns out, these kinds of drug-related myths have been circulating for d=
ecades. In 1967, the New York Times published [an article claiming](https:/=
/timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1967/04/05/90311915.html?pageNumber=
=3D48) that smoking banana peels was =E2=80=9Cthe latest craze among colleg=
e students and beatniks,=E2=80=9D who were pursuing a high reminiscent of t=
hat of cannabis. Four months later, [another Times article claimed](https:/=
/timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1967/07/31/90383756.html?pageNumber=
=3D23) that [hippies](https://doubleblindmag.com/searching-for-freedom-on-t=
he-road-with-the-dead/) smoked banana peels at the invocation of marijuana =
protest =E2=80=9Csmoke-ins=E2=80=9D on [Manhattan=E2=80=99s Lower East Side=
](https://doubleblindmag.com/the-parsonage-david-hajdu/), though by the end=
 of the year, the paper [was citing research](https://timesmachine.nytimes.=
com/timesmachine/1967/11/12/83641494.html) that found no evidence of any ha=
llucinogenic compounds in banana peels, concluding that any high obtained w=
as likely a placebo. Within a few years, reporting on people smoking banana=
 peels=E2=80=94and the alleged psychoactive compound they supposedly contai=
ned, =E2=80=9Cbananadine=E2=80=9D=E2=80=94 had all but disappeared. As it w=
as a passing fad? A political statement? There=E2=80=99s a reason you won=
=E2=80=99t find any trip reports for bananadine on Erowid.

----------## Bananadine: The Psychedelic That Wasn=E2=80=99t

First, we=E2=80=99ll say this: the only way to trip on a banana peel is by =
slipping on one. =E2=80=9CBananadine=E2=80=9D does not exist: It=E2=80=99s =
entirely fictional. Banana peels=E2=80=94whether raw, smoked, or baked=E2=
=80=94are not psychedelic. Still, by the late 1960s, the =E2=80=9Challucino=
genic=E2=80=9D [fruit skin](https://doubleblindmag.com/mushroom-fruiting-ch=
ambers-everything-you-need-to-know/) was making headlines in some of the wo=
rld=E2=80=99s most prestigious newspapers: _The New York Times_, _Time_, an=
d _Newsweek._

Frank Thompson, a Democratic New Jersey Congressman, introduced the =E2=80=
=9CBanana and Other Odd Fruit Disclosure and Reporting Act of 1967,=E2=80=
=9D seeking to take firm federal action [against the recreational use](http=
s://doubleblindmag.com/is-ketamine-legal/) of bananas by labeling them with=
 some sort of =E2=80=9Cno smoking=E2=80=9D sticker.=C2=A0

=E2=80=9CApparently, it was not enough for this generation of thrill-seeker=
s to use illicit [LSD](https://doubleblindmag.com/lsd/), marijuana, and air=
plane glue. They have now invaded the fruit salad,=E2=80=9D he testified [t=
o the House of Representatives](https://www.congress.gov/bound-congressiona=
l-record/1967/04/19/house-section) on April 19, 1967. =E2=80=9CWhat can Con=
gress do in this time of crisis? A high official in the FDA has declared: =
=E2=80=98Forbidding the smoking of materials from banana peels would requir=
e congressional legislation.=E2=80=99 [=E2=80=A6] As a legislator, I feel i=
t is my duty to respond to this call of action.=E2=80=9D

The federal [Food and Drug Administration](https://doubleblindmag.com/crens=
haw-fda-guidelines/) announced it was investigating banana peels as a possi=
ble psychedelic. Smoking them, they thought, might produce =E2=80=9Cthe met=
hylated form of serotonin.=E2=80=9D At the time, methylated serotonin was a=
lso studied for its connection to [schizophrenia](https://doubleblindmag.co=
m/is-there-a-link-between-endogenous-dmt-and-schizophrenia/).

That same year, New York University medical researchers surveyed 50 people =
who had smoked banana peels and found that twelve saw no effects and thirte=
en noticed only subtle changes. The other half reported effects ranging fro=
m sedation to elevated mood, with only three explicitly experiencing halluc=
inogenic sensations that some compared to the effects of [DMT](https://doub=
leblindmag.com/the-dmt-experience-how-to-go-about-it-and-what-to-expect/). =
However, the researchers=E2=80=99 chemical analysis found that unsmoked pee=
ls contained no DMT, and baked peels were capable of producing only mild ef=
fects on the nervous system, which users might psychologically =E2=80=9Cela=
borate=E2=80=9D into the perception of a high. Put differently, anyone who =
felt high after smoking banana peels was likely experiencing placebo, motiv=
ated by their personal desires or rumors they had heard.Eventually, the FDA=
=E2=80=99s research also failed to find any evidence of psychoactivity.=C2=
=A0 =E2=80=9CA laboratory apparatus =E2=80=98smoked=E2=80=99 dried banana p=
eels for more than three weeks and never did get high,=E2=80=9D they [wrote=
 in a news release.](https://www-jstor-org.uoregon.idm.oclc.org/stable/4253=
000) The conclusion was plain: banana peels are not hallucinogenic.



## The Great Banana Hoax

So=E2=80=94what gives? We=E2=80=99ll have to set the scene. In the 1960s, a=
t the height of the counterculture movement, people experimented with all k=
inds of substances, from LSD to marijuana to peyote. In this atmosphere of =
exploration, some looked to household staples like cloves and poppy seeds a=
s possible exciting new drugs.

This environment went hand-in-hand with a strange confluence of misinterpre=
ted [song ](https://doubleblindmag.com/the-best-psychedelic-songs-of-all-ti=
me/)lyrics, imaginative musicians, underground news reports, and a plethora=
 of reprinted =E2=80=9C[recipes](https://doubleblindmag.com/mushrooms/how-t=
o-take-shrooms/recipes/).=E2=80=9D The air was ripe for misinformation.

----------Author John McMillian explores this experimental landscape in his=
 book Smoking Typewriters, which looks at the influence of the American alt=
ernative press in the 1960s. Prior to the internet, underground presses wer=
e a primary means of communicating [counterculture](https://doubleblindmag.=
com/gerd-stern-allen-ginsberg-carl-solomon/) news. There was the _Los Angel=
es Free Press_, the NY East Village Other, and, of course, the first known =
culprit to propagate the banana myth: the _Berkeley Barb.=C2=A0_

These underground newspapers challenged the mainstream media=E2=80=99s assu=
mptions about culture and national issues. But, rumors could easily circula=
te unchecked. On March 17, 1967, the Barb [wrote](https://www.jstor.org/sta=
ble/community.28033118?ab_segments=3D0%2Fbasic_search_gsv2%2Fcontrol&refreq=
id=3Dfastly-default%3Aa3ff18399dc0cd96710a59dad56a47f8) that baking banana =
peels caused a chemical reaction that created bufotenine, the same psychoac=
tive compound secreted by the Sonoran Desert Toad=E2=80=94and hardly a mild=
 one. Eventually,=C2=A0 the story of bufotenine transformed into the story =
of bananadine through a twisted game of telephone. Baked banana peels conta=
in neither compound.=C2=A0

Groups held banana sit-ins, advertised by the underground press. Psychedeli=
c entrepreneurs schemed up business opportunities. One business hopeful, La=
ry Starin, told the _Barb_ that his venture =E2=80=9Cwill provide jobs for =
hippies, with modest pay, free hot lunches and all the bananas they can eat=
. Those who buy =E2=80=98nickel bags=E2=80=99 of prepared banana scrapings =
will be happy, too.=E2=80=9D=C2=A0

Today, our =E2=80=9Cbird=E2=80=99s eye view=E2=80=9D of the situation makes=
 it clear that the idea of smoking banana peels=E2=80=94while inevitably at=
tempted by numerous people who heard the rumor=E2=80=94was a joke. Or, as t=
he FDA loudly exclaimed: a [hoax](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6050795/)=
. Although, whether or not the hoax was intentional is the subject of rumor=
.=C2=A0

According to McMillian, the hoax began with the psychedelic rock band Count=
ry Joe and the Fish. As the story goes, the band started smoking banana pee=
ls after drinking from a pitcher of water that also happened to contain one=
 hundred tabs of dissolved LSD. Smoking banana peels wasn=E2=80=99t complet=
ely out of character for the band. Drummer Gary =E2=80=9CChicken=E2=80=9D H=
irsh made a hobby of experimenting with different plants that might contain=
 psychoactive compounds=E2=80=94or so he believed. Following Hirsh=E2=80=99=
s hunch, the band had prepared banana scrapings earlier in the day to test =
out. Word got out at their show.=C2=A0

_Barb_ columnist Ed Denson was the band=E2=80=99s manager.

Then things went mainstream. The idea took off, and many people associated =
it with Scottish singer Donovan=E2=80=99s 1966 song =E2=80=9CMellow Yellow,=
=E2=80=9D which was believed to be about smoking banana peels. (In fact, Do=
novan wrote in liner notes accompanying his 1969 greatest hits album that t=
he =E2=80=9Celectrical banana=E2=80=9D mentioned in the song was actually a=
 coded reference to vibrators.)=C2=A0

Within a year of the rumor=E2=80=99s appearance, the federal government was=
 already investigating whether bananas could be turned into drugs. Within a=
 larger atmosphere of fear-mongering around =E2=80=9Creefer madness=E2=80=
=9D (a term coined by a 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film), some anti-dru=
g organizations may have contributed to spreading the banana peel myth as a=
 way to frighten young people away from experimenting with drugs.If the _Ne=
w York Times_=E2=80=99_ _and other_ _reporting holds water, certain people =
actually did smoke banana peels, but in most cases this was likely as a jok=
e, or to achieve minor, non-hallucinogenic effects=E2=80=94smoking anything=
 can give you a buzz.



### The Bananadine =E2=80=9CRecipe=E2=80=9D=C2=A0

The supposed culprit behind banana peels=E2=80=99 high was a psychoactive c=
ompound called =E2=80=9Cbananadine,=E2=80=9D which does not actually exist.=
 It=E2=80=99s a made-up name for a made-up substance. There is no scientifi=
c evidence to suggest that any part of the banana plant contains compounds =
that could cause hallucinations or other serious drug-like effects.

Nonetheless, a recipe for smoking banana peels appeared in the _Berkeley Ba=
rb_. Citing dubious research, the article claimed that the best way to smok=
e banana peels was to first freeze them, then blend them into a pulp before=
 baking them at 200 degrees and finally smoking them in a cigarette or pipe=
. =E2=80=9CBanana Sunshine!=E2=80=9D declared the article, which was reprin=
ted in newspapers from Los Angeles, to Seattle, Detroit, Austin, and New Yo=
rk.=C2=A0

Likely believing the half-baked article to be true, countercultural author =
William Powell included a similar recipe for producing =E2=80=9Cbananadine=
=E2=80=9D in his 1971 book _The_ _Anarchist Cookbook_, which along with oth=
er controversial content included instructions for producing explosives, we=
apons, and illicit drugs like [LSD at home](https://doubleblindmag.com/will=
y-myco-lsd-synthesis-in-pakistan/). (After numerous perpetrators of violent=
 incidents were found to have been interested in his cookbook, Powell himse=
lf later joined calls for publishers to cease printing it, though it has ne=
ver gone out of publication, and more than two million copies have been sol=
d.)

Once again, =E2=80=9Cbananadine=E2=80=9D is not=E2=80=94nor has ever been=
=E2=80=94a real compound. We do not recommend attempting this recipe, nor a=
nything else from _The Anarchist Cookbook_!=C2=A0



## Setting the Record Straight

Regardless of the reasons behind the myth, it=E2=80=99s important to set th=
e record straight. Banana peels are not hallucinogenic, and there is no suc=
h thing as bananadine. If you=E2=80=99re looking for a psychedelic experien=
ce, there are plenty of [legal and safe ways to do so. ](https://doubleblin=
dmag.com/legal-ways-to-trip/)But smoking banana peels is not one of them.

At the same time, there is something funny about how easily and quickly thi=
s hoax provoked reactions from the government and mainstream media, who at =
the time were quick to demonize any and all emerging psychedelics, proving =
the hippies=E2=80=99 point: that drug panic was often misguided, [motivated=
 more by fear and lies](https://doubleblindmag.com/why-all-drugs-should-be-=
legal/) than by actual scientific evidence. [MDMA](https://doubleblindmag.c=
om/mdma-what-is-molly/) does not take ice cream scoops out of your brain, L=
SD trips do not last forever, and =E2=80=9Cthe kids=E2=80=9D are not actual=
ly smoking banana peels=E2=80=94nor are they drinking expired soup cans to =
get high, or =E2=80=9Ctrampolining,=E2=80=9D another term confabulated by [=
that SNL skit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DLV9yvGGNaiQ).
