Welcome to Londonist: Time Machine, the newsletter that takes a playful app=
roach to London history.
It=E2=80=99s time for another instalment in our multi-year mission to colou=
r in the 1746 John Rocque map of London. And today, we reach the outer limi=
ts of London as the Mile End Road reaches out to Essex.
This map includes the ancient parish of Stepney, some scattered buildings a=
long Mile End Road and a huge expanse of uncultivated fields. It is, in sho=
rt, the most spartan map panel to date.
That=E2=80=99s not to say it=E2=80=99s without interest, however. Before we=
savour the details, I=E2=80=99d like to quickly recap the wider project, f=
or the benefit of those who have stumbled across this for the first time (a=
nd I=E2=80=99m still finding new readers with every instalment =E2=80=94 he=
llo!). If you=E2=80=99re already familiar with these maps, then you can ski=
p the next section.
What this is, and why I=E2=80=99m doing it
John Rocque=E2=80=99s 1746 map was by far the most detailed survey of Londo=
n up to that point. Across its 24 sheets, you will find the names of thousa=
nds of alleys, wharves, lanes and landmarks, mapped in a clear, consistent =
style. And all of it was done for the first time with (reasonably) accurate=
surveying methods. It is, quite simply, one of the great treasures of Lond=
on.
I=E2=80=99m adding colour to this previously black-and-white map for severa=
l reasons:
(1) It helps us to see the patterns of land use (urban versus agricultural =
versus marsh and moor and meadow). It also reveals the hidden watercourses,=
City ward boundaries, churchyards, parterres, partitions and plantations t=
hat made up the 18th century city. All this information is on the black-and=
-white original, but it=E2=80=99s much easier to distinguish with a bit of =
colour.
(2) It=E2=80=99s a lot of fun to spend many hours poring over my favourite =
map and, I suspect, I=E2=80=99m getting to know it better than anyone alive=
=2E That means I might spot a few details that have been missed before.
(3) It amuses my kids to know that daddy likes colouring things in as much =
as they do.
I=E2=80=99m going to let the map do most of the talking in today=E2=80=99s =
newsletter. Explore it at your leisure and see what you can discover. But I=
would like to pick up on a few highlights below. I suggest you have a copy=
of the map open in a separate tab or on another device, so you can alterna=
te between the map and the commentary.
What can we see in the new map?
Let=E2=80=99s begin by superimposing a few labels and features, so we can g=
et a better sense of the area we=E2=80=99re looking at:
The Regent=E2=80=99s Canal was still 70 years in the future at this point. =
Mile End Tube would not appear until 1902. Adding them to the map, though, =
helps us get our bearings.
We should start with the most obvious feature, St Dunstan=E2=80=99s church =
in the lower-left. The =E2=80=98Mother Church of the East End=E2=80=99 is o=
ne of the most ancient churches in all of London. It=E2=80=99s said to have=
been founded around 952 by Future-Saint Dunstan himself. The present churc=
h is 15th century, with some 13th century remnants, making it the oldest bu=
ilding in Tower Hamlets, other than the Tower of London itself. And, rather=
wonderfully, one of its stained glass windows features a view of Stepney=
=E2=80=A6 including a gasholder:
I love that church. Comparing its situation to the modern street map shows =
that things have changed little in these parts over the last 280 years:
The road layout and churchyard are remarkably resilient to change in these =
parts. Even the row of =E2=80=98Mercers Almshouses=E2=80=99, shown at the c=
entre-bottom of this excerpt, are still there today, though rebuilt after s=
ustaining severe damage in the Second World War.
St Dunstan=E2=80=99s is not the only burial site to survive into our own ti=
mes from the Rocque map. Look to the middle-left on the main map and you=E2=
=80=99ll spot two plots labelled as the Jews Old Burying Ground and Jews Ne=
w Burying Ground.
These are both intact today, and are remarkable survivors. The Old Burial G=
round, known as the Velho Cemetery, is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the co=
untry. It was founded in 1657, just one year after Oliver Cromwell allowed =
Jews back into England (though a small population had lived semi-secretly i=
n London for decades). We even know the surname of the first person to be b=
uried there =E2=80=94 a Mrs de Brito, wife of Isaac de Brito. The second in=
terment was Antonio Fernandez Carvajal, who had helped pay for the land.
As you may have guessed from his name, Carvajal was of Sephardic (Iberian J=
ewish) background, and the cemetery he founded would mostly serve that comm=
unity in the decades ahead. By the time of Rocque=E2=80=99s map in 1746, th=
e Velho (Portuguese for =E2=80=98old=E2=80=99) cemetery was essentially ful=
l, with very few burials taking place. Today, it is closed off to the publi=
c, only accessible by prior appointment.
The filling of the Velho Cemetery called for the creation of a new one, whi=
ch would quite logically be named the Novo Cemetery (or =E2=80=98Jews New B=
urial Ground=E2=80=99 on our map). It was still relatively new in Rocque=E2=
=80=99s day, having opened for burials in 1733.=20
This cemetery is open to the public. You can=E2=80=99t miss it, in fact, if=
you=E2=80=99ve ever taken a stroll through the Queen Mary campus. It is an=
astonishing sight among the university buildings:
It hasn=E2=80=99t quite survived intact. In 1973, the remains of some 7,000=
people =E2=80=94 including Benjamin Disraeli=E2=80=99s grandfather =E2=80=
=94 were exhumed and reburied in Brentwood, Essex. The move apparently had =
the blessing of Rabbis, but the reinterment in unmarked mass graves is now =
considered to have been contrary to Jewish Law. Simon Schama has described =

=E2=80=98a sad history that can=E2=80=99t be undone=E2=80=99, though there =
are hopes that a memorial might be erected at some point.=20
In contrast, the graves that remain must be among the most visited in Londo=
n, thanks to the university campus that has grown up on all four sides of t=
he burial ground.
A few more short observations about the map=E2=80=A6
Bencroft=E2=80=99s Hospital: A major development between the two Jewish cem=
eteries, this was an enclave of almshouses for elderly men of the Drapers=
=E2=80=99 Company. It was demolished in the mid-19th century, and became th=
e site for the People=E2=80=99s Palace [ https://substack.com/redirect/cbf1=

Rhode=E2=80=99s Well: The only buildings in the lower-right quadrant bear t=
his name. The wonderful blog A London Inheritance points out [ https://subs=

In0.TfBByzC2vCq-pY94WhF9hVTcrDRYs6QySyrNvyrpKXA ] that this is written as R=
ogue=E2=80=99s Well on an earlier map. It=E2=80=99s uncertain which was the=
real name, and which one was a mishearing on the part of the map-maker.
White Horse Lane: Most of the roads and tracks shown in the map have long-s=
ince vanished under housing developments. White Horse Lane to the centre-le=
ft of our map is an exception. It still follows the same course, under the =
same name today.
Worlds End: This label north-east of St Dunstan=E2=80=99s is apt. It marks =
the point where the buildings of Stepney peter out into countryside. The Wo=
rld=E2=80=99s End was a common name for a tavern at the edge of town =E2=80=
=94 most famously the one in Chelsea, which has been retained in a major ho=
using estate. A pub of that name also once stood on the fringes of Stepney.=
Today, this is Ben Johnson Road, but an adjacent alley called Bermuda Way =
still gives off edge-of-the-world vibes.
The wider map
Before I leave you, here=E2=80=99s a low-res compilation showing all 19 of =
the 24 panels I=E2=80=99ve coloured in so far. Having spent about two and a=
half years on this project, it feels like the end may soon be in sight. I=
=E2=80=99m still hopeful I can finish all the panels by early 2027.
The files I=E2=80=99m working with are about 50 cm by 70 cm. That means the=
entire map, if printed out, would be four metres wide and over two metres =
tall. You can see why it=E2=80=99s taking many months to colour in! If any =
galleries or museums with a suitably large wall are reading this=E2=80=A6 I=
=E2=80=99d love to hear from you (cough, cough London Museum). It=E2=80=99s=
my ambition to get the complete map printed out and displayed somewhere, o=
nce complete (and properly colour-balanced).

cque’s 1746 map was </span><em>by far</em><span> the most detailed su=
rvey of London up to that point. Across its 24 sheets, you will find the na=
mes of thousands of alleys, wharves, lanes and landmarks, mapped in a clear=
, consistent style. And all of it was done for the first time with (reasona=
bly) accurate surveying methods. It is, quite simply, one of the great trea=
sures of London.</span></p><p style=3D"margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: rgb(54,55,=
55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">I’m adding colour to this pre=
viously black-and-white map for several reasons:</p><p style=3D"margin: 0 0=

It helps us to see the patterns of land use (urban versus agricultural vers=
us marsh and moor and meadow). It also reveals the hidden watercourses, Cit=
y ward boundaries, churchyards, parterres, partitions and plantations that =
made up the 18th century city. All this information is on the black-and-whi=
te original, but it’s much easier to distinguish with a bit of colour=

a lot of fun to spend many hours porin=
g over my favourite map and, I suspect, I’m getting to know it better=
than anyone alive. That means I might spot a few details that have been mi=

was still 70 years in the future at this point. Mile End Tube would not ap=
pear until 1902. Adding them to the map, though, helps us get our bearings.=

ont-size: 16px;">We should start with the most obvious feature, St Dunstan&=
#8217;s church in the lower-left. The ‘Mother Church of the East End&=
#8217; is one of the most ancient churches in all of London. It’s sai=
d to have been founded around 952 by Future-Saint Dunstan himself. The pres=
ent church is 15th century, with some 13th century remnants, making it the =
oldest building in Tower Hamlets, other than the Tower of London itself. An=
d, rather wonderfully, one of its stained glass windows features a view of =

survivors. The Old Burial Ground, known as the Velho Cemetery, is the oldes=
t Jewish cemetery in the country. It was founded in 1657, just one year aft=
er Oliver Cromwell allowed Jews back into England (though a small populatio=
n had lived semi-secretly in London for decades). We even know the surname =
of the first person to be buried there — a Mrs de Brito, wife of Isaa=
c de Brito. The second interment was Antonio Fernandez Carvajal, who had he=

ese for ‘old’) cemetery was essentially full, with very few bur=
ials taking place. Today, it is closed off to the public, only accessible b=

ed for the creation of a new one, which would quite logically be named the =
Novo Cemetery (or ‘Jews New Burial Ground’ on our map). It was =
still relatively new in Rocque’s day, having opened for burials in 17=
