I want to start somewhere personal, because that is where this actually beg=
an. A few years ago, when I started paying serious attention to what was ha=
ppening to children online, the starting point was not a research paper. It=
 was my own children. Something was shifting in the house in a way I could =
sense but not yet name. Not a crisis. Nothing dramatic. Just a gradual chan=
ge in mood, in where attention went, in how quickly irritability arrived wh=
en the screen was not available. The kind of thing a parent notices because=
 they know the texture of their child's ordinary days, not because an alarm=
 has sounded. That observation became a question. The question became a sea=
rch for the right framework. And somewhere in that search I found that the =
researchers who seemed to see the problem most clearly were not the loudest=
 voices in the room. They were not commissioning the headlines or driving t=
he bans. But they were the ones whose thinking actually explained what I wa=
s observing, what parents describe to me, and what the evidence quietly sho=
ws when you read it carefully rather than quickly. This week, something hap=
pened that made me want to put that thinking properly into the room. A comm=
ent arrived under one of my posts from Dr Catherine Knibbs (PhD) FRSA , a c=
linical and doctoral researcher who has been working with children experien=
cing digital harm since 2012 and has written six books on the subject. She =
is one of the most grounded practitioners working in this field in the UK, =
and she chose to appear not to promote herself but to share a single observ=
ation. The observation was this: the quote at the centre of her PhD researc=
h came from 1961. Not 2016. Not 2006. 1961. A concern about media effects o=
n children, articulated before the internet existed, in language that would=
 not look out of place in a safeguarding report today. "Every generation as=
ks the same question about the new medium. Television. Video games. The int=
ernet. Social media. The worry follows the same shape. And in each generati=
on, some of it turns out to be well-founded. Some of it turns out to be the=
 wrong question dressed up in new language." Her point was not that current=
 concern is unfounded. It was that the pattern of anxiety following each ne=
w medium, while the underlying framework for understanding harm stays large=
ly fixed, should tell us something important about whether we are asking th=
e right questions. Why every generation gets this partially wrong Each new =
medium gets treated as if it were a cause in itself. A singular, isolable f=
orce acting on children. The debate becomes about dosage. How much is too m=
uch. What happens when you remove it. Research follows the debate. Studies =
measure time spent. Meta-analyses average across populations. The average t=
urns out to be modest. Some people conclude there is not much to worry abou=
t. Others point to specific cases of serious harm and conclude the modest a=
verage is missing something important. Both sides are right. And neither si=
de has the framework to say so cleanly. The framework that makes it possibl=
e to hold both things at once is one that Catherine has been applying clini=
cally for over a decade and drew on explicitly in her doctoral research. It=
 is called Actor Network Theory. And it describes precisely what the single=
-medium, single-cause model of harm keeps missing. The network, not the nod=
e Actor Network Theory was developed in the 1980s by researchers Bruno Lato=
ur, Michel Callon, and John Law. The core argument is not complicated, but =
its implications are substantial. Outcomes in the world are not produced by=
 single causes. They emerge from networks of actors. The word actor here in=
cludes not just people but objects, technologies, environments, histories, =
biological states, institutional arrangements. Anything that makes a differ=
ence to how the network behaves is an actor. Remove one and the outcome shi=
fts. Keep all the others in the same configuration while removing just one =
and very little changes. The child's network =E2=80=94 every actor present =
before the phone is touched the childdevelopmental stagepre-existing anxiet=

vous system statealgorithmic model of that child Remove any one node and th=
e outcome shifts. Remove only the device and the rest of the configuration =
waits. This is what the screen time debate keeps missing. It isolates one a=
ctor, the device and its hours of use, and treats it as if it were the expl=
anation. But if you remove the device from a network in which all the other=
 actors are still present and still interacting, you have not addressed the=
 configuration. You have temporarily relocated it. What the algorithm is ac=
tually doing There is a concept within Actor Network Theory called inscript=
ion. It describes what happens when an actor's interests get built into a d=
evice or system so that the device continues to act on those interests auto=
nomously, without anyone needing to make individual decisions. Latour's ori=
ginal example was a hotel door-closer. A mechanical device that enforces th=
e rule "close the door after you" without requiring a person to stand there=
. The intent has been transferred into the material. The object now acts. T=
he recommendation algorithm is the most powerful inscription currently oper=
ating in children's lives. It carries the platform's commercial interest in=
 maximising engagement into every feed, every autoplay, every content seque=
nce. Continuously. At scale. Personalised to each individual child. Whether=
 anyone at the platform is watching or not. And the model it builds of each=
 child is specific: what content produces the strongest response, what emot=
ional register keeps them scrolling, what the nervous system of this partic=
ular child responds to most powerfully. It is not reading what is good for =
a child. It is reading what is effective on that particular child. Those ar=
e different things. Radically different things, in some network configurati=
ons. This is what Catherine Knibbs has been documenting clinically since 20=
12. What she calls cybertrauma, the real neurological and psychological har=
m that can emerge from digital experience, does not arrive uniformly across=
 all children who use social media. It concentrates in the children whose n=
etwork makes them most susceptible to what the algorithm has learned to ser=
ve them. What her BPS book reveals about habits and the brain Catherine's B=
PS series book, Managing Your Gaming and Social Media Habits: From Science =
to Solutions (Routledge, 2024), does something almost no other book in this=
 space manages. It explains why technology use patterns form the way they d=
o, without catastrophising and without the addiction framing that is both s=
cientifically contested and practically unhelpful for families. The book is=
 grounded in neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology, and Stephen Porges' =
Polyvagal framework. What this means in practice is that it takes the body =
seriously as a site where technology experiences register, not just behavio=
ur and cognition. The nervous system is an actor in the network. How regula=
ted or dysregulated a child is before they pick up a device shapes what the=
y are seeking when they engage with it, and how the platform's engagement s=
ignals interact with their neurological state. Children who are already in =
a state of low-level threat, whose stress response is primed by anxiety, fa=
mily adversity, or adverse experiences, are not entering a neutral space wh=
en they open social media. They are entering a highly responsive environmen=
t with their sensitivity already elevated. The algorithm reads engagement s=
ignals, including the signals produced by threat states, and optimises towa=
rd them. The child is not becoming anxious because of the algorithm. The al=
gorithm is finding the anxiety and deepening the pathway it has already cre=
ated. The book also explains why telling a child to simply use their phone =
less does not address the mechanism beneath the habit. Habits are neurologi=
cal patterns. They are not formed through choice alone and they are not dis=
solved through restriction alone. Understanding what need technology is mee=
ting, what state it is regulating, what social function it serves, is the p=
rerequisite for any change that holds. One of the book's most quietly radic=
al arguments is its insistence on recognising technology's genuine positive=
s. At a moment when the public debate has become almost entirely catastroph=
ising, this is not a soft position. It is an accurate one. What Tech-Smart =
Parenting offers families directly Catherine's 2025 book, Tech-Smart Parent=
ing: How to Keep Your Kids Happy and Safe Online (Ebury/Vermilion), takes t=
he same body of thinking directly into family life. It is 368 pages of clin=
ical experience and evidence expressed in the language of practical parenti=
ng, and it addresses the questions that come up most consistently in my own=
 conversations with parents. The book's central argument is expressed in it=
s own framing: we are asking the wrong question. The question of whether to=
 ban screens is wrong not because screens are harmless but because it treat=
s the platform as if it were the network rather than one actor within it. B=
anning the screen does not address what the child carries into the digital =
environment. It does not touch their developmental stage, their attachment =
history, their nervous system state, or the algorithm's inscribed purpose. =
It relocates the network temporarily. When access returns, the same configu=
ration is there. The book gives particular attention to two groups that the=
 mainstream conversation consistently underserves. Neurodivergent children,=
 who often use social media for social connection that is genuinely harder =
to find offline, face higher algorithmic exposure and a more detailed platf=
orm model of their specific engagement patterns. The risks are real. So are=
 the genuine benefits of digital connection for children whose neurological=
 profile makes offline social interaction more demanding. The book holds bo=
th with clinical accuracy and without binary thinking. The second is the pa=
rent-child relationship itself as the primary protective factor. If restric=
tions perceived as unfair push a child toward concealment, they remove the =
parent from the child's digital life at precisely the point where presence =
matters most. A child who has learned to hide their phone use from a parent=
 who shames or bans is a child whose algorithmic profile is being built wit=
hout any adult awareness of what it is learning. The protective factor is n=
ot the rule. It is the relationship. Why the ban keeps failing =E2=80=94 th=
e obligatory passage point There is another concept from Actor Network Theo=
ry that clarifies exactly why the ban-based approach keeps arriving at the =
same place despite its apparent logic. It is called the obligatory passage =
point. An obligatory passage point is the position a powerful actor creates=
 by arguing that everyone who wants to achieve a goal must pass through the=
m. The phone ban has functioned as an obligatory passage point in the polic=
y conversation. The implicit claim is that the route to children's digital =
safety necessarily runs through restricting or removing the device. School =
phone pouches. The Australian under-16 legislation. The Ofcom age verificat=
ion requirements. Each positions itself as the necessary passage through wh=
ich protection must travel. But an obligatory passage point is a claim, not=
 a fact. It can be displaced. And the evidence that this particular claim i=
s the right one is considerably weaker than the confidence with which it is=
 being asserted. What Amy Orben Buckley , @Andrew Przybylski and Candice Od=
gers have consistently shown is that population-level effects of social med=
ia on adolescent mental health are modest. Not because social media is harm=
less. Because the serious harm concentrates in specific configurations. Pre=
-existing anxiety or depression. The developmental sensitivity of ages ten =
to fourteen. Family adversity. An algorithm with months of engagement data =
on that specific child. When those actors converge, the harm is real, serio=
us, and entirely predictable. And it is not reached by a device ban. The de=
vice ban does not see the configuration. It sees the device. What a pathway=
 does that a ban cannot A ban removes one actor. A pathway maps the network=
. The Guided Digital Pathway is built on the premise that children do not a=
rrive at platforms as blank slates. They arrive carrying a developmental hi=
story, an attachment pattern, a family context, a set of capacities and vul=
nerabilities forming since long before they picked up a device. What the pl=
atform finds when it begins to learn them, and what the algorithm builds ov=
er time, depends on that configuration far more than on hours spent or age =
of first access. Catherine writes in Tech-Smart Parenting that outright ban=
s and rules perceived as unfair can push a child away when what they need m=
ost is connection with you. This is not a soft observation. It is a precise=
 clinical one about the mechanism through which protection actually operate=
s. The protective factor is not the rule. It is the relationship. The paren=
t who is close, present, and trusted is the adult whose awareness remains p=
art of the child's digital life. The parent whose restrictions are perceive=
d as illegitimate becomes the adult the child learns to hide things from. T=
he algorithm notices neither. But the child's nervous system does. The Guid=

e same operating logic. Not a restriction. Not a policy. A map of the netwo=
rk, age-appropriate at every stage, that prepares children for what they wi=
ll encounter and gives parents the language and tools to stay present along=
side them. An operating system for digital childhood that improves, prepare=
s, and fundamentally changes the approach from banning to learning. One tha=
t morphs as the landscape changes, because the landscape will change, and t=
he child who has developed genuine self-regulatory capacity will navigate w=
hatever comes next in a way that the child who was simply denied access nev=
