The race to succeed Theresa May as Conservative Party Leader claimed sever=
al more scalps last Thursday as the two finalists were whittled down to Bo=
ris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt. These two candidates will now fight on for an=
other four weeks to win the backing of the Tory grassroots membership=2C a=
n electorate of only 150=2C000=2C who will decide our future Prime Ministe=
r.
Mr Johnson=2C still seen as the favourite to win=2C has been criticised fo=
r his reluctance to take part in TV debates or newspaper interviews during=
the first leg of the campaign=2C instead preferring to use his weekly col=
umn in the Daily Telegraph as a platform for his policies. Given his reput=
ation for making colourful and often controversial statements=2C many beli=
eve his team have been trying to keep the former Mayor of London out of th=
e spotlight to avoid any gaffes that could cost him the race at the last h=
urdle =E2=80=93 a not entirely successful strategy given the intense criti=
cism of Mr Johnson=E2=80=99s private life which erupted over the weekend a=
nd which has continued to dominate headlines these past few days. He has=
given an interview to the BBC but ;refused to be drawn on the row.
In the meantime=2C Jeremy Hunt has stepped up his criticism of his rival=
=2C branding Mr Johnson =E2=80=98disrespectful=E2=80=99 over his avoidance=
of media scrutiny. Mr Hunt had agreed to appear on Sky for a debate ahead=
of Conservative Party members=E2=80=99 receiving their postal ballots=2C=
but Mr Johnson has only committed to attend an ITV event on 9th July=2C b=
y which date the ballots will have arrived and many Tory members will have=
already begun voting.
Both candidates will also tour the country for several hustings attended b=
y the Party faithful. Brexit is of course still a defining topic=2C but jo=
urnalists will be keen to extract as much information on their broader pol=
itical vision as possible. Such as whether they intend to introduce tax cu=
ts=2C invest in public services=2C reform social care=2C and tackle knife=
crime.
Despite the media circus which has surrounded this whole process and the B=
rexit paralysis still grappling Westminster=2C we should not forget that t=
here are many other pressing political issues which the new Prime Minister=
will have to tackle once he assumes office. However=2C as we saw with The=
resa May and her burning injustices=2C it remains questionable as to wheth=
er their legacy will be defined by anything other than Brexit.
Question on helping young people into the labour market in the House of Co=

Cat Smith MP=2C the Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs=2C asked (https://ww=
w.parliament.uk/business/publications/written-questions-answers-statements=
/written-question/Commons/2019-06-10/262407/) what the Government was doin=
g to support young people furthest away from the labour market.
Alok Sharma MP=2C the Employment Minister=2C responded that helping these=
young people was a priority for the Department for Work and Pensions=2C w=
hich offers a variety of support. This includes the Youth Obligation Suppo=
rt Programme which is now available in every Job Centre in Great Britain.=
Working with young people=2C the Job Centre can assess their particular n=
eeds and refer them to the most appropriate place. This can include sector=
-based work academies where young people can access training=2C followed b=
y a guaranteed interview for an apprenticeship or other job.
There are also traineeships available=2C which may last up to six months=
=2C during which those furthest away from the labour market are helped to=
reach level 2 in English and Maths.
Contribution of the Immigration Skills Charge to skills provision (https:/=

2355/) what recent assessment the Government has made of the effectiveness=
of the Immigration Skills Charge in increasing skills provision in Englan=
d.
The Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills Rt Hon Anne Minton MP said tha=
t the 2017 =E2=80=93 2018 income from the Immigration Skills Charge provid=
ed =C2=A375 million to the Department for Education=E2=80=99s budget.
Whilst this is not additional funding=2C the income raised by the ISC help=
s to maintain the Department=E2=80=99s existing skills budget and existing=
levels of investment.
Government publishes details of immigration advisory group (https://www.go=

The Home Office is undertaking a year-long engagement programme around the=
future skills-based immigration system and has now published the membersh=

loped.
The Immigration Minister Rt Hon Caroline Nokes MP said the advisory groups=
will provide invaluable experience representing the views of businesses=
=2C employers and vulnerable people.
Government announces new investment in aerospace industry (https://www.gov=
=2Euk/government/news/lift-off-for-new-investment-in-uk-smes-to-develop-new-=
aerospace-technology)
The Government has launched (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/lift-off-f=
or-new-investment-in-uk-smes-to-develop-new-aerospace-technology) a new=
=C2=A324 million research and development fund to back pioneering aerospa=
ce SMEs.
Funding will go towards collaborate research projects and the National Aer=
ospace Technology Exploitation Programme=2C both of which are hoped to hel=
p increase the UK=E2=80=99s share of the growing aerospace market. The pro=
jects will support the development of innovative technology=2C including v=
irtual reality=2C to keep the UK at the forefront of aerospace suppliers a=
nd manufacturing.
The Government=E2=80=99s Aerospace Industrial Strategy was designed to hel=
p companies in this sector to develop advanced technology=2C raise product=
ivity and create high value jobs in every part of the country.
Traineeships support young people into employment (https://www.gov.uk/gove=

y)
New Government research (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/traineeships-h=
elp-young-people-to-access-jobs-and-further-study) highlights how trainees=
hips are benefiting young people and employers across the country as 75% o=
f trainees find employment=2C take up an apprenticeship or go on to furthe=
r study within a year of completing their programme.
The Apprenticeships and Skills Minister Rt Hon Anne Milton MP said that tr=
aineeships help people of all ages and backgrounds to have the opportunity=
to learn new skills and to have successful careers.
To encourage more young people to start a traineeship=2C the Government is=
providing =C2=A320 million through the Adult Education Budget for further=
education and training providers.

tive Party Leader claimed several more scalps last Thursday as the two fin=
alists were whittled down to Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt. These two cand=
idates will now fight on for another four weeks to win the backing of the=
Tory grassroots membership=2C an electorate of only 150=2C000=2C who will=
decide our future Prime Minister. <br>

Mr Johnson=2C still seen as the favourite to win=2C has been criticised fo=
r his reluctance to take part in TV debates or newspaper interviews during=
the first leg of the campaign=2C instead preferring to use his weekly col=
umn in the Daily Telegraph as a platform for his policies. Given his reput=
ation for making colourful and often controversial statements=2C many beli=
eve his team have been trying to keep the former Mayor of London out of th=
e spotlight to avoid any gaffes that could cost him the race at the last h=
urdle =E2=80=93 a not entirely successful strategy given the intense criti=
cism of Mr Johnson=E2=80=99s private life which erupted over the weekend a=
nd which has continued to dominate headlines these past few days. He=
has given an interview to the BBC but ;refused to be drawn on the row.<br=

In the meantime=2C Jeremy Hunt has stepped up his criticism of his rival=
=2C branding Mr Johnson =E2=80=98disrespectful=E2=80=99 over his avoidance=
of media scrutiny. Mr Hunt had agreed to appear on Sky for a debate ahead=
of Conservative Party members=E2=80=99 receiving their postal ballots=2C=
but Mr Johnson has only committed to attend an ITV event on 9th July=2C b=
y which date the ballots will have arrived and many Tory members will have=
already begun voting. <br>
<br>
Both candidates will also tour the country for several hustings attended b=
y the Party faithful. Brexit is of course still a defining topic=2C but jo=
urnalists will be keen to extract as much information on their broader pol=
itical vision as possible. Such as whether they intend to introduce tax cu=
ts=2C invest in public services=2C reform social care=2C and tackle knife=
crime. <br>
<br>
Despite the media circus which has surrounded this whole process and the B=
rexit paralysis still grappling Westminster=2C we should not forget that t=
here are many other pressing political issues which the new Prime Minister=
will have to tackle once he assumes office. However=2C as we saw with The=
resa May and her burning injustices=2C it remains questionable as to wheth=
er their legacy will be defined by anything other than Brexit. </span=

rt Programme which is now available in every Job Centre in Great Britain.=
Working with young people=2C the Job Centre can assess their particular n=
eeds and refer them to the most appropriate place. This can include sector=
-based work academies where young people can access training=2C followed b=
y a guaranteed interview for an apprenticeship or other job.<br>
<br>
There are also traineeships available=2C which may last up to six months=
=2C during which those furthest away from the labour market are helped to=
reach level 2 in English and Maths.</span></p>
