UK in Focus – Less ‘Liberation’ more ‘Amerexit’
The UK was hit with a 10% tariff from the US; however, the economic impact
will depend on how both the UK and other governments respond. On the basis
that the UK opts not to retaliate, we judge the risks to be weighted toward
weaker growth and disinflation. Indeed, the market reaction has been
negative, and markets now expect UK interest rates to fall faster than
pre-tariff announcement. The uncertainty adage is a headache for
policymakers, particularly the government, who despite restoring the fiscal
headroom remain vulnerable to economic developments.
