Frio is a striking grey colt born on 17 February 2023, by leading young sire
Havana Grey out of Guarded Secret. He’s closely related to elite racehorses

Purchased for £140,000 at the 2024 Goffs Premier Yearling Sale, Frio
represents an exceptional level of quality and breeding rarely available in

Frio has already shown serious ability on the racecourse. On debut at
Musselburgh in a Class 2 Novice Stakes over 5 furlongs, he ran a huge race
to finish 3rd behind Dickensian — a horse that went on to place second in
the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, and continued his form through
Group races at Goodwood, York, and Doncaster. Despite losing lengths at the
start, Frio rallied with great speed and determination, marking himself as a
colt of immense promise.
Like his sire, Havana Grey, Frio combines raw pace with scope and physical
presence. Havana Grey’s progeny — including Vandeek and Elite Status — have
quickly risen to Group class, and all indications suggest Frio has the
potential to follow suit.

Why hasn’t Frio ran since May?
Frio went off at 5/4 favourite in a valuable £40,000 Class 2 novice stakes
at York on just his second career start – a race where connections truly
believed he was set to deliver a breakthrough win on his road to Royal
Ascot. Sadly, he sustained a minor pelvic injury during the running, which
understandably sidelined him.
Rather than risk rushing him back prematurely, we prioritised his long-term
wellbeing, allowing plenty of time for full recovery without cutting any
corners. Multiple X-rays and veterinary checks have now confirmed he’s 100%
sound, earning the green light to resume training and target a blockbuster
2026 season at his peak.
Pelvic injuries are common in racehorses – especially promising young colts
like Frio under intense preparation – but they’re typically straightforward
to resolve with conservative rest and management, carrying a strong
prognosis for full return to racing.
Why will Frio take us to the big stage?
Frio’s debut was an extremely eye catching one when finishing 3rd to
Dickensian, who has gone on to be placed twice in listed races, aswell as
being placed in a Group 3 and Group 2 races in 2025.
Due to inexperience, Frio lost many lengths out of the gates on his debut
giving him a slow first furlong. After the first furlong, Frio completed the
race in 46.23 seconds, apposed to Dickensian’s 46.66.
On these times, Frio would have been the winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes
of 2025.
Before his pelvis injury, his work on the gallops was exceptional — truly as
good as words can describe. Now fully sound and back in light training, he’s
on track for a spring return. Physically, he’s thrived during his time off,
and like many of Havana Grey’s progeny, he will make significant progress at
three.
The roadmap for Frio
We’re treating Frio as a Group 1 horse — based on his form and sectional
times, we must prepare for the very top level.
Before his pelvis injury, his work on the gallops was exceptional — truly as
good as words can describe. Now fully sound and back in light training, he’s
on track for a spring return. Physically, he’s thrived during his time off,
and like many of Havana Grey’s progeny, he’s expected to make significant
progress at three.
His workload will gradually increase from January, building steadily towards
a seasonal debut in April, when he’ll line up in the red, white and blue
silks.
Our plan is to start him in a three-year-old novice stakes at the Doncaster
Lincoln meeting. This will qualify him for an official handicap rating and,
ideally, see him get that first win on the board over five or six furlongs.
Following that run, his next target will depend on his rating and
performance. Options include the Class 2 handicap at the York Dante meeting
or the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock.
From there, we’ll consider either the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap at
Royal Ascot or — if he continues progressing — the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth
II Jubilee Stakes, worth £1,000,000.
Post-Ascot, he’ll be aimed at the Group 2 King George Stakes at Glorious
Goodwood, then the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York.
Should all go to plan, and depending on his performances, Frio could develop
into a horse capable of taking us to the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at
Keeneland, Kentucky, USA.
