Paying a premium
for ‘graded’ coins
You’ve decided to purchase some physical gold (so far so good) and have
decided on gold coins for their unbeatable tax benefits (another good move).
Then the dealer you are speaking to starts pushing you in the direction of
‘graded’ coins. Our advice at this point is to walk away, quickly.
With gold bullion you do need to know you are getting the real thing - that’s
where certification, LBMA membership and reputation come in.
‘Grading’ on the other hand is simply a subjective opinion of the aesthetic
perfection of the coin. And it comes at a significant price premium that you
are unlikely to ever see returned when it comes to sell.
If you’re buying for investment, as opposed to simply collecting beautiful
objects, don’t waste your money.

Buying ‘physical
gold’ that isn’t
When you invest in physical gold, one of the key drivers is that you can
actually take possession of it.
That, of course, is where gold’s ability to protect from counterparty risk
lies. It isn’t digital. It can’t be hacked, wiped out electronically or
interfered with.
And yet there are companies out there who will sell you ‘physical gold’ that
is, in fact, just a digital promise. The gold does exist, but you can’t take
it home.
That’s because you ‘own’ a fractional share of what is actually their gold.
And a promise that they will repay you the relevant value when you wish to
sell.
It’s efficient for them, but you aren’t getting the same deal - or the same
set of benefits and protections.

Only thinking bars
and not coins
For the uninitiated, it’s easy to think that anyone who suggests investing
in gold coins rather than bars isn’t taking your investment goals seriously.
Or worse, that they can make some money out of your ignorance (see ‘graded’
coins above). Because coins do command a premium over bars. It’s all gold at
the end of the day, so what’s the difference?
Tax status, that’s what. Bars and coins are both VAT-exempt. But only
UK-minted coins are CGT exempt on any growth you make - and that can make a
big difference. No-one likes losing money to HMRC.
That’s why investor demand (and hence the market size when selling) for
coins is higher than it is for bars.
