Château du Raux’s is one such a wine, which we sourced from good friends in
Bordeaux earlier this year (I remember well their barely-concealed grins —
they knew how good it was), and it absolutely blew our socks off!
But don’t just take our word for it, take it from the Bordelais royalty that
is ‘super-second’ Château Ducru-Beaucaillou of Saint-Julien: shortly after
this 2016 release, they were so impressed by the results and indeed the
quality of Du Raux’s terroir (situated adjacent the appellation), they
snapped up a parcel of the vineyard for themselves!

How does the wine taste?
This is right in the sweet spot for drinking: at first, ripe blackcurrant
and an appealing fruit coulis perfume on the nose – with a swirl of the
glass coaxing more mature and secondary aromas to emerge sweet, smoky spice
and a note of cedar, perhaps. Classically claret, and quite Saint-Julien in
style.
On the palate, luscious texture, and fine balance. Pure, fresh cassis fruit,
with nice richness and a sophisticated, polished feel to it. Nearly ten
years of maturity gives this layers and layers of flavour. Some good
winemaking at work here. Equal parts cabernet and merlot.
