Monthly Report - June
Good evening,
June has been a quiet month in terms of runners, but we’ve been treated to
some fantastic racing, with both Royal Ascot and the Epsom Derby Festival
providing plenty of memorable moments.
Firstly, apologies for being a little quiet. With the sun finally shining,
we’ve been busy making hay for the winter ahead. When making hay, you have
to be on it with the crops as you only really get one opportunity each year
to produce the best possible yield. Thankfully, we’ve managed to put away
935 bales, which will keep the horses well fed for the rest of this year and
into the winter ahead.
Royal Ascot then arrived, which naturally had my full attention, and I also
took a few days away last week to recharge. We’re now fully back and looking
forward to what promises to be an exciting second half of the season.
Over the past week, we have officially parted company with the Seb Spencer
yard. I’d like to place on record my sincere thanks to Seb and everyone at
the yard for all of their hard work and dedication during our time together.
These decisions are never easy, but after plenty of thought we felt it was
the right time to move in a different direction. Racing is always evolving,
and our focus is now firmly on the future. As always, every decision we make
is with the best interests of our horses and owners at heart, and we’re
excited about what lies ahead.
The Epsom Derby was the only major meeting run on soft ground during June as
Christmas Day powered clear around Tattenham Corner, giving Aidan O’Brien
and the Coolmore team the English, French and Irish Derby treble for the
second consecutive year.
Royal Ascot was another fantastic spectacle. My personal highlight was
seeing Rogue Diplomat win the 28-runner Royal Hunt Cup at odds of 28/1 after
being tipped up on the WhatsApp service. Across the five-day meeting we also
found another 15 winners, making it another memorable and profitable Royal
Ascot.
This weekend the Coral Eclipse takes centre stage at Sandown. French Derby
winner Constitution River heads the market after an excellent spring
campaign, having won the Dee Stakes at Chester before the runner-up,
Generic, advertised the form by winning the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal
Ascot after being tipped up on the line at 18/1. While that form looks rock
solid, Wathnan Racing’s Gethin makes plenty of appeal after only going down
by a neck to the world’s highest-rated horse, Ombudsman, last time out. At
the current prices, I’d rather be with Gethin.
Another horse to keep an eye on is Night Star, who is entered to run at
Sandown on Friday. He finished what appears to be a modest fifth of nine at
Newbury earlier this month, but he wasn’t beaten far and caught the eye
staying on nicely in behind. With a couple of those rivals re-opposing, I
can see him running a big race at likely double-figure odds.
Crocodile Power
Crocodile Power was last seen towards the end of May when he ran at
Catterick. The plan was always to give him a quieter couple of months after
a busy spring campaign, and he’ll return to the racecourse in early August
when we’ll hopefully be back on the hunt for some softer ground.
He’s in rude health and thoroughly enjoying his midsummer break. It’s hugely
important to keep Crocodile Power mentally fresh, as we’ve learned that if
he’s overworked or raced too frequently, he simply doesn’t enjoy it as much.
Previous seasons have shown that he always benefits from a short break.
He’s sitting on a very workable handicap mark, and we’re expecting a busy
autumn campaign.
His new trainer will be officially announced over the coming weeks once his
midsummer break comes to an end. It’s a name that needs very little
introduction, and we’re hugely excited to begin the next chapter.
1% shares remain available in Crocodile Power for £50 per month if you’d
like to become more involved in ownership.
Velvet Assassin
Velvet Assassin has had a slightly interrupted June after picking up a
snotty nose and a touch of flu. It’s nothing to worry about in the
slightest, but it did set him back by a couple of weeks.
He’s now fully recovered, has done everything we’ve asked of him and is
ready to race. He’ll be making his debut during July.
Since we bought him, both his brother and sister have become winners, while
his younger brother recently sold for 98,000gns. We think he’ll be best
suited by six or seven furlongs, exactly as his pedigree suggests. He’s a
very well-rounded two-year-old and we hope he’ll give us plenty of fun this
season.
Velvet Assassin will now be joining Declan Carroll, a trainer renowned for
his success with two-year-olds, including last year’s Gimcrack Stakes
winner, Lifeplan.
Miss Unexpected
Miss Unexpected continues to thrive. Declan is having another excellent
season and she has become a real yard favourite.
Declan feels she’s ready to start over seven furlongs, ideally with a little
bit of ease in the ground. She’s a big, powerful filly who has almost
doubled in size over the past year. She still has plenty of fire in her
belly, but she’s full of confidence and never shirks a battle.
We’re aiming for her racecourse debut towards the end of July.
Sir Bobby
Sir Bobby is a lovely horse, but unfortunately he has been nothing short of
a frustration for us.
Seb tried everything possible, but we’ve now decided to take a different
approach. I’ve been working very closely with Declan Carroll’s son-in-law
and former jockey Luke Leadbitter on his stalls work.
The biggest issue is confidence. When a horse loses confidence, they simply
stop performing and become reluctant to do what you’re asking of them. Sir
Bobby will happily walk into the stalls at home when everything is quiet,
but he struggles when there’s an atmosphere around him.
Our current work is all about rebuilding that confidence while maintaining
his fitness. I’d love to be able to put a date on his return to the
racecourse, but until we solve the stalls issue, there’s little point
rushing him. Patience now will hopefully pay dividends later.
Wotalaad
I recently checked in on Wotalaad (video below), who is settling brilliantly
into his new career as an event horse.
As you all know, he’s a big, scopey horse with a fantastic attitude.
Unfortunately, he just lacked the speed required for racing.
He’s now with Mrs Elise Bradley, who does an excellent job preparing horses
for life after racing. She’s only ten minutes down the road, so it’s lovely
to be able to pop in and see how he’s progressing. He looks fantastic and is
thoroughly enjoying his new career.
Chester Le Streak & Desert Dream
Both Chester Le Streak and Desert Dream (video below) continue to do
incredibly well at Cottam Grange.
A potential home recently came up for Desert Dream, but unfortunately it
wasn’t quite right. He’s a horse who genuinely enjoys having company, and
without another horse alongside him he becomes unsettled, calling out and
appearing stressed. There’s absolutely no rush to move him on, and he’ll
only leave when we find somebody with the right experience and another
horse to keep him company.
Chester Le Streak, on the other hand, is completely different. He’s
perfectly happy in his own company and takes everything in his stride. He
remains with us looking absolutely fantastic and, with his kind temperament,
will make somebody a wonderful riding horse when the right home comes along.

month. July promises to be an exciting one, with Velvet Assassin and Miss
Unexpected set to make their racecourse debuts, Crocodile Power edging
closer to his return, and plenty more action to come on the WhatsApp

June has been a quiet month in terms of runners, but we=E2=80=99ve been =
treated to some fantastic racing, with both Royal Ascot and the Epsom =
Derby Festival providing plenty of memorable moments.<br>
<br>
<br>
Firstly, apologies for being a little quiet. With the sun finally =
shining, we=E2=80=99ve been busy making hay for the winter ahead. When =
making hay, you have to be on it with the crops as you only really get =
one opportunity each year to produce the best possible yield. =
Thankfully, we=E2=80=99ve managed to put away 935 bales, which will keep =
the horses well fed for the rest of this year and into the winter =
ahead.<br>
<br>
<br>
Royal Ascot then arrived, which naturally had my full attention, and I =
also took a few days away last week to recharge. We=E2=80=99re now fully =
back and looking forward to what promises to be an exciting second half =
of the season.<br>
<br>
<br>
Over the past week, we have officially parted company with the Seb =
Spencer yard. I=E2=80=99d like to place on record my sincere thanks to =
Seb and everyone at the yard for all of their hard work and dedication =
during our time together. These decisions are never easy, but after =
plenty of thought we felt it was the right time to move in a different =
direction. Racing is always evolving, and our focus is now firmly on the =
future. As always, every decision we make is with the best interests of =
our horses and owners at heart, and we=E2=80=99re excited about what =
lies ahead.<br>
<br>
<br>
The Epsom Derby was the only major meeting run on soft ground during =
June as Christmas Day powered clear around Tattenham Corner, giving =
Aidan O=E2=80=99Brien and the Coolmore team the English, French and =
Irish Derby treble for the second consecutive year.<br>
<br>
<br>
Royal Ascot was another fantastic spectacle. My personal highlight was =
seeing Rogue Diplomat win the 28-runner Royal Hunt Cup at odds of 28/1 =
after being tipped up on the WhatsApp service. Across the five-day =
meeting we also found another 15 winners, making it another memorable =
and profitable Royal Ascot.<br>
<br>
<br>
This weekend the Coral Eclipse takes centre stage at Sandown. French =
Derby winner Constitution River heads the market after an excellent =
spring campaign, having won the Dee Stakes at Chester before the =
runner-up, Generic, advertised the form by winning the Hampton Court =
Stakes at Royal Ascot after being tipped up on the line at 18/1. While =
that form looks rock solid, Wathnan Racing=E2=80=99s Gethin makes plenty =
of appeal after only going down by a neck to the world=E2=80=99s =
highest-rated horse, Ombudsman, last time out. At the current prices, =
I=E2=80=99d rather be with Gethin.<br>
<br>
<br>
Another horse to keep an eye on is Night Star, who is entered to run at =
Sandown on Friday. He finished what appears to be a modest fifth of nine =
at Newbury earlier this month, but he wasn=E2=80=99t beaten far and =
caught the eye staying on nicely in behind. With a couple of those =
rivals re-opposing, I can see him running a big race at likely =
double-figure odds.<br>
<br>
<br>
<u><strong>Crocodile Power</strong></u><br>
<br>
<br>
Crocodile Power was last seen towards the end of May when he ran at =
Catterick. The plan was always to give him a quieter couple of months =
after a busy spring campaign, and he=E2=80=99ll return to the racecourse =
in early August when we=E2=80=99ll hopefully be back on the hunt for =
some softer ground.<br>
<br>
<br>
He=E2=80=99s in rude health and thoroughly enjoying his midsummer break. =
It=E2=80=99s hugely important to keep Crocodile Power mentally fresh, as =
we=E2=80=99ve learned that if he=E2=80=99s overworked or raced too =
frequently, he simply doesn=E2=80=99t enjoy it as much. Previous seasons =
have shown that he always benefits from a short break.<br>
<br>
<br>
He=E2=80=99s sitting on a very workable handicap mark, and we=E2=80=99re =
expecting a busy autumn campaign.<br>
<br>
<br>
His new trainer will be officially announced over the coming weeks once =
his midsummer break comes to an end. It=E2=80=99s a name that needs very =
little introduction, and we=E2=80=99re hugely excited to begin the next =
chapter.<br>
<br>
<br>
1% shares remain available in Crocodile Power for =C2=A350 per month if =
you=E2=80=99d like to become more involved in ownership.<br>
<br>
<br>
<u><strong>Velvet Assassin</strong></u><br>
<br>
Velvet Assassin has had a slightly interrupted June after picking up a =
snotty nose and a touch of flu. It=E2=80=99s nothing to worry about in =
the slightest, but it did set him back by a couple of weeks.<br>
<br>
He=E2=80=99s now fully recovered, has done everything we=E2=80=99ve =
asked of him and is ready to race. He=E2=80=99ll be making his debut =
during July.<br>
<br>
Since we bought him, both his brother and sister have become winners, =
while his younger brother recently sold for 98,000gns. We think =
he=E2=80=99ll be best suited by six or seven furlongs, exactly as his =
pedigree suggests. He=E2=80=99s a very well-rounded two-year-old and we =
hope he=E2=80=99ll give us plenty of fun this season.<br>
<br>
Velvet Assassin will now be joining Declan Carroll, a trainer renowned =
for his success with two-year-olds, including last year=E2=80=99s =
Gimcrack Stakes winner, Lifeplan.<br>
<br>
<br>
<strong><u>Miss Unexpected</u></strong><br>
<br>
<br>
Miss Unexpected continues to thrive. Declan is having another excellent =
season and she has become a real yard favourite.<br>
<br>
<br>
Declan feels she=E2=80=99s ready to start over seven furlongs, ideally =
with a little bit of ease in the ground. She=E2=80=99s a big, powerful =
filly who has almost doubled in size over the past year. She still has =
plenty of fire in her belly, but she=E2=80=99s full of confidence and =
never shirks a battle.<br>
<br>
<br>
We=E2=80=99re aiming for her racecourse debut towards the end of =
July.<br>
<br>
<br>
<u><strong>Sir Bobby</strong></u><br>
<br>
<br>
Sir Bobby is a lovely horse, but unfortunately he has been nothing short =
of a frustration for us.<br>
<br>
Seb tried everything possible, but we=E2=80=99ve now decided to take a =
different approach. I=E2=80=99ve been working very closely with Declan =
Carroll=E2=80=99s son-in-law and former jockey Luke Leadbitter on his =
stalls work.<br>
<br>
The biggest issue is confidence. When a horse loses confidence, they =
simply stop performing and become reluctant to do what you=E2=80=99re =
asking of them. Sir Bobby will happily walk into the stalls at home when =
everything is quiet, but he struggles when there=E2=80=99s an atmosphere =
around him.<br>
<br>
Our current work is all about rebuilding that confidence while =
maintaining his fitness. I=E2=80=99d love to be able to put a date on =
his return to the racecourse, but until we solve the stalls issue, =
there=E2=80=99s little point rushing him. Patience now will hopefully =
pay dividends later.<br>
<br>
<br>
<u><strong>Wotalaad</strong></u><br>
<br>
<br>
I recently checked in on Wotalaad (video below), who is settling =
brilliantly into his new career as an event horse.<br>
<br>
As you all know, he=E2=80=99s a big, scopey horse with a fantastic =
attitude. Unfortunately, he just lacked the speed required for =
racing.<br>
<br>
He=E2=80=99s now with Mrs Elise Bradley, who does an excellent job =
preparing horses for life after racing. She=E2=80=99s only ten minutes =
down the road, so it=E2=80=99s lovely to be able to pop in and see how =
he=E2=80=99s progressing. He looks fantastic and is thoroughly enjoying =
his new career.<br>
<br>
<br>
<u><strong>Chester Le Streak & Desert Dream</strong></u><br>
<br>
<br>
Both Chester Le Streak and Desert Dream (video below) continue to do =
incredibly well at Cottam Grange.<br>
<br>
<br>
A potential home recently came up for Desert Dream, but unfortunately it =
wasn=E2=80=99t quite right. He=E2=80=99s a horse who genuinely enjoys =
having company, and without another horse alongside him he becomes =
unsettled, calling out and appearing stressed. There=E2=80=99s =
absolutely no rush to move him on, and he=E2=80=99ll only leave when we =
find somebody with the right experience and another<br>
horse to keep him company.<br>
<br>
<br>
Chester Le Streak, on the other hand, is completely different. =
He=E2=80=99s perfectly happy in his own company and takes everything in =
his stride. He remains with us looking absolutely fantastic and, with =
his kind temperament, will make somebody a wonderful riding horse when =
the right home comes along.<br>
<br>
<br>
