I want to begin by thanking you for your kind support of the RAF Benevolent 
Fund. It’s a particularly personal ‘thank you’ from me, because without the 
support I received – support made possible with your help, through your 
engagement with the work of the RAF Benevolent Fund – I probably wouldn’t be 
writing this letter to you today.

My name’s Andrew Stevens and I served in the RAF for seven years. I loved 
being part of a tight community and they were like a family to me. But after 
cuts in defence spending, I was made redundant.




Despite finding a civilian job easily, I found it quite stressful, and my 
life quickly seemed to spiral out of control. I began to worry about 
everything – finances, family, my new job, my home. Eventually that worry 
turned into compulsion.




It started with small things like washing my hands constantly because I was 
so scared of getting ill and not being able to work. Things escalated, and 
before I knew it, I was washing my hands four or five times and still wasn’t 
happy. I wouldn’t even go near my children. I know it sounds crazy, but I 
couldn’t risk touching them.




This went on for ten long years. I struggled with extreme 
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) – meaning I struggle with obsessive 
thoughts and compulsive behaviours.




I asked myself if there was any point in me being here. I was ready to end 
things.




Then I reached out to the RAF Benevolent Fund. Their immediate support meant 
I didn’t have to ask myself these questions for very long – and slowly the 
darkness lifted. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that the

they provided saved my life.

I had counselling once a week for around six months and found that this 
really helped me turn my life around. And I know I’m not the only one.




The RAF Benevolent Fund helped over 40,000 RAF service personnel, veterans 
and their families last year. That’s quite an impact I’m sure you’ll agree.




That’s why I’d like you to consider making a cash gift today to help more

With support from the RAF Benevolent Fund and my wonderful family, my life 
has completely changed. I’ve now got a less stressful job, and I volunteer 
with the Air Cadets, training them as part of the fieldcraft team and I love 
it. That is my passion.




I know my OCD is always going to be there. But the difference now is how I 
manage it to make sure it doesn’t get out of control.




I can’t thank the RAF Benevolent Fund enough for helping me at the lowest 
point of my life. And I hope that it will be there to help others like me.

they were like a family to me. But after cuts in defence spending, I was =

found it quite stressful, and my life quickly seemed to spiral out of =

my new job, my home. Eventually that worry turned into compulsion. =

started with small things like washing my hands constantly because I was =
so scared of getting ill and not being able to work. Things escalated, =
and before I knew it, I was washing my hands four or five times and =
still wasn=E2=80=99t happy. I wouldn=E2=80=99t even go near my children. =
I know it sounds crazy, but I couldn=E2=80=99t risk touching them. =
</p><p style=3D"word-wrap: break-word;word-break: break-word;margin: =
0px;text-align: justify"><br></p><p style=3D"word-wrap: =
break-word;word-break: break-word;margin: 0px;text-align: justify">This =
went on for ten long years. I struggled with extreme =
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) =E2=80=93 meaning I struggle with =
obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.</p><p style=3D"word-wrap: =
break-word;word-break: break-word;margin: 0px;text-align: =
justify"><br></p><p style=3D"word-wrap: break-word;word-break: =
break-word;margin: 0px;text-align: justify">I asked myself if there was =
any point in me being here. I was ready to end things. </p><p =
