What’s happening in the electricity market?
UK wholesale electricity prices rebounded slightly last week, with day-ahead
baseload averaging around £84/MWh. Renewables covered roughly a third of
supply, though variable wind meant greater reliance on gas-fired generation
and imports, particularly from France and Norway. Forward contracts for Q4
2025 (~£80.5/MWh) retained a mild winter risk premium. Falling carbon
allowance prices provided some relief to generation costs.
Key drivers:
* Renewables provided ~34% of supply, but variable wind lifted gas burn and
imports.
* Net imports averaged 4.3 GW (15% of supply), led by France and Norway.
* Demand peaks in the low-30s GW were below seasonal norms, supported by
mild weather and solar.
* Carbon prices fell (EUA ~–2%, UKA ~–6%), slightly easing marginal costs.

What’s happening in the gas market?
UK wholesale gas prices were steady, with NBP day-ahead averaging ~79.5p/th,
effectively unchanged on the week. Comfortable LNG send-out and steady
Norwegian flows balanced the system, while mild weather delayed heating
demand. Seasonal forwards edged higher, with Winter 2025 trading near 83p/th
as traders-maintained risk premiums into colder months.
Key drivers:
* LNG send-out (~10-14 mcm/day) offset reduced Norwegian flows from
maintenance.
* Mild late-September weather delayed heating demand, keeping consumption
soft.
* Gas-for-power demand rose during low-wind periods.
* European storage remains near record levels, capping upside pressure.
