The 'house' Rhône red for many FromVineyardsDirect wine enthusiasts the 
Laudun Côtes du Rhône Villages from Château Courac has long been a firm 
favourite with the the current 2022 vintage is no exception. Cases have been 
flying off the warehouse shelves following my colleague's recent email - 
copied below - announcing its return.

The village of Laudun sits just to the north-west of the famous southern 
Rhône appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with many lovingly referring to 
Château Courac's Laudun Côtes-du-Rhône Villages as a 'mini Châteauneuf'.

While it certainly shares much of the character of its illustrious 
neighbour, with enticingly dark, bold, juicy, spicy, complex fruit flavours 
and a warming finale, one thing it doesn't share is the price, because with 
today's case offer of £14.75 a bottle (down from £15.75) it's less than 1/2 
that of Châteauneuf.

The cuvée is dominated by syrah complemented by grenache and mourvèdre, with 
the resulting wine offering a wonderful medley of bold red and dark berry 
fruit elegantly balanced with refreshing, spicy undertones.

I last reviewed this wine a few months ago and even in that short time the 
aromas and palate have opened further, such a delicious wine that tastes far 
more prestigious than the price might suggest.

It's drinking better than ever, and a great value addition to any cellar.

My Notes | Tasted April

The deep, rich, inky colour in the glass suggests a robust and grippy wine, 
but the 2022 vintage again surprises with a sense of elegance and freshness 
evident on the palate. A quick swish releases aromas of blackcurrant and 
spice, the wine is far more open following a few months in the bottle, 
though a decant really allows those aromas to blossom.

On the palate, a medley of ripe, dark-berry fruit, spice, and freshness 
shines through. Flavours of blackcurrant, sweet black cherry, cracked black 
pepper, and a hint of liquorice create a complex profile, where gorgeously 
ripe fruit is balanced by a refreshing acidity.

The finish is well-structured, with dark, brambly fruit re-emerging, 
complemented by a cool freshness.

This lovely glass of red, a modest three years from vintage, is already 
starting to evolve further in the bottle, with greater aromatics and more of 
those seductive spicy notes and deeper layers of dark, brambly fruit 
beginning to emerge.

Very drinkable as an unaccompanied glass but with the power and poise to 
impress at the dinner table, or if your inclined to fire up the barbecue 
this is certain to shine along side - even over enthusiastically - grill 
meats.
