Fiona Hill on Societal Resilience and a World at War



The 2026 IWM Institute Annual Lecture examines national preparedness amid 
the turbulence of today's world order.

Watch Fiona Hill, former senior US presidential advisor, explore how we can 
be more resilient in the face of geopolitical upheavals, with tensions 
around the world rising to their highest levels in recent memory.

Drawing on stories from IWM’s own collections and objects on display at IWM 
London, Hill explored how resilience had made a crucial difference to the 
First World War and Second World War, saying: “Britain made it through both 
world wars because its society proved more resilient than initially 
anticipated”.

The lecture also highlights how Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 
2022 saw Ukrainian society respond, observing how the country has had to 
find ways to deal with the realities of the war.

"Ukraine’s fight for survival has been a bottom-up, not just top-down, 
effort. This is war by crowdsourcing," she said.
