An interview with Elon Musk

Elon Musk doesn’t dither. When I saw him a few months ago at an event in California, I suggested he come on The Insider. He told me to get in touch with him after the SpaceX IPO. I did—via a direct message on X, his social-media platform—and within 24 hours of him thumbs-upping my message someone from his Tesla office had set the wheels in motion.
Our conversation, which we filmed on Monday and which will be available to watch tomorrow, is Mr Musk’s first extended interview since the SpaceX listing. It also comes at a critical moment in the AI debate. Just days prior, Moonshot AI, a Chinese startup, unveiled Kimi K3, a model only marginally less capable than Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s latest offerings and further evidence of the rapid Chinese progress on AI that has unnerved America’s leading model-makers. Above all, I wanted to get Mr Musk’s view on the trajectory of the technology. How concerned is he today about its risks to people’s lives and livelihoods? And how should it be regulated to prevent bad outcomes?
His responses were staggering. He told me that he expected AI to “exceed the sum of human intelligence” in “roughly five years”. It is “unlikely” that humans will still be in control in ten. He can’t see any way to stop the momentum of AI, but his approach is to simply “enjoy the ride”. I was stunned by this sense of fatalism. His insouciance, too. It is a departure from his previous stance. In an interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson over a decade ago, a worried Mr Musk said that humans would be lucky to end up as AI’s “pet Labrador”. In March 2023 he jointly called for a pause in AI development. And last year he told Ted Cruz that he thought there was a 10-20% likelihood of “killer robots annihilating
humanity”.
He was less outlandish, and more practical, on what could be done now to keep the technology safe. He suggested the leading AI model-makers should test each others’ models before they are released. If the group found problems and the model-maker didn’t fix them, the government should be brought in. This idea is not a million miles from a plan proposed recently by Sir Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of Google DeepMind, who wants America to set up a public-private regulator for AI. Mr Musk told me that Chinese labs should be included in this scheme and he was clear that something had to be done quickly (a point brought home by news the day after our interview of Open AI’s model

another company). He even suggested that he might be willing to set aside his differences with his longtime rival, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, for the “good of the world”.
Mr Musk was rueful about his foray into American politics. The tycoon helped to bring Donald Trump back to power in 2025 and briefly led his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Now he thinks he got “a little too involved”. “I [...] got carried away, frankly.” But he was aggressive—and unconvincing—on the damage done by DOGE. “Zero people died” because of DOGE and the rapid shutdown of USAID, he told me. “Zero.”
On Europe, too, Mr Musk was forceful and unrepentant. He uses his powerful platform (he has 240m followers on X alone) to caricature the continent as a hotbed of violent crime. This isn’t a Europe I recognise (indeed, Mr Musk admits that he hasn’t been to London, where I live, for a number of years) and the data don’t support his claims. Despite this, his view of the old world has taken hold: I have come across a number of Americans who are nervous about travelling to London, Paris and other European capitals for fear of their many perils. When I took him to task over the irresponsibility of his posts, he repeated his assertion that Britain is headed for civil war owing to an influx of people whose ideas are “antithetical to Western beliefs”. And, according
to Mr Musk, the media’s characterisation of Europe’s far-right is “false and misleading and nonsense”. Our exchange was extended and, at times, heated.
I don’t consider myself a Musk-hater. His achievements are extraordinary, and probing his vision of the future was exhilarating and mind-stretching as much as it was alarming. But I was disturbed by the final part of our discussion. His expansive outlook had given way to caricature, tribalism and bigotry. When it comes to AI, his philosophy, he told me, is to “look on the bright side”. His view of the world today, however, seems much darker. Given the power he has, that is deeply troubling.

Elon Musk doesn’t dither. When I saw him a few months ago at an event in California, I suggested he come on The Insider. He told me to get in touch with him after the SpaceX IPO. I did—via a direct message on X, his social-media platform—and within 24 hours of him thumbs-upping my message someone from his Tesla office had set the wheels in motion. <br>

Our conversation, which we filmed on Monday and which will be available to watch tomorrow, is Mr Musk’s first extended interview since the SpaceX listing. It also comes at a critical moment in the AI debate. Just days prior, Moonshot AI, a Chinese startup, unveiled Kimi K3, a model only marginally less capable than Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s latest offerings and further evidence of the rapid Chinese progress on AI that has unnerved America’s leading model-makers. Above all, I wanted to get Mr Musk’s view on the trajectory of the technology. How concerned is he today about its risks to people’s lives and livelihoods? And how should it be regulated to prevent bad outcomes? <br>

His responses were staggering. He told me that he expected AI to “exceed the sum of human intelligence” in “roughly five years”. It is “unlikely” that humans will still be in control in ten. He can’t see any way to stop the momentum of AI, but his approach is to simply “enjoy the ride”. I was stunned by this sense of fatalism. His insouciance, too. It is a departure from his previous stance. In an interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson over a decade ago, a worried Mr Musk said that humans would be lucky to end up as AI’s “pet Labrador”. In March 2023 he jointly called for a pause in AI development. And last year he told Ted Cruz that he thought there was a 10-20% likelihood of “killer robots annihilating
humanity”.<br>

He was less outlandish, and more practical, on what could be done now to keep the technology safe. He suggested the leading AI model-makers should test each others’ models before they are released. If the group found problems and the model-maker didn’t fix them, the government should be brought in. This idea is not a million miles from a plan proposed recently by Sir Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of Google DeepMind, who wants America to set up a public-private regulator for AI. Mr Musk told me that Chinese labs should be included in this scheme and he was clear that something had to be done quickly (a point brought home by news the day after our interview of Open AI’s model

another company). He even suggested that he might be willing to set aside his differences with his longtime rival, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, for the “good of the world”.<br>

Mr Musk was rueful about his foray into American politics. The tycoon helped to bring Donald Trump back to power in 2025 and briefly led his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Now he thinks he got “a little too involved”. “I [...] got carried away, frankly.” But he was aggressive—and unconvincing—on the damage done by DOGE. “Zero people died” because of DOGE and the rapid shutdown of USAID, he told me. “Zero.”<br>

On Europe, too, Mr Musk was forceful and unrepentant. He uses his powerful platform (he has 240m followers on X alone) to caricature the continent as a hotbed of violent crime. This isn’t a Europe I recognise (indeed, Mr Musk admits that he hasn’t been to London, where I live, for a number of years) and the data don’t support his claims. Despite this, his view of the old world has taken hold: I have come across a number of Americans who are nervous about travelling to London, Paris and other European capitals for fear of their many perils. When I took him to task over the irresponsibility of his posts, he repeated his assertion that Britain is headed for civil war owing to an influx of people whose ideas are “antithetical to Western beliefs”. And,
according to Mr Musk, the media’s characterisation of Europe’s far-right is “false and misleading and nonsense”. Our exchange was extended and, at times, heated. <br>

I don’t consider myself a Musk-hater. His achievements are extraordinary, and probing his vision of the future was exhilarating and mind-stretching as much as it was alarming. But I was disturbed by the final part of our discussion. His expansive outlook had given way to caricature, tribalism and bigotry. When it comes to AI, his philosophy, he told me, is to “look on the bright side”. His view of the world today, however, seems much darker. Given the power he has, that is deeply troubling. <br>
