ew Education Secretary wrote in the Times that schools are stuck in a =E2=80=
=98straitjacket=E2=80=99 of putting subjects like English, maths and scienc=
e first, causing children to be labelled a =E2=80=98failure again and again=
=E2=80=99. She even took aim at one Michael Gove (one assumes readers know =
who he is), saying she wanted to take a =E2=80=98fresh look at what we are =
teaching our children=E2=80=99 as part of efforts to undo his reforms. We d=

Powell said the government will consider the recommendations of a review by=
Professor Becky Francis to see whether schools are =E2=80=98equipping [ch=
ildren] for their lives ahead=E2=80=99. Professor Francis=E2=80=99s report =
last year largely left Gove=E2=80=99s reforms unchanged but suggested that =
teenagers should take fewer GCSE exams over fears of stress and a lack of d=
etailed understanding. But the Times suggests that Powell wants to =E2=80=98=
go further=E2=80=99 in allowing children to focus on more technical subject=
s from an earlier age.
