China is unusual in having three separate maritime forces at its disposal. The first two are the navy and the coastguard. But since as far back as the 1950s, China&rsquo;s leaders have also commandeered part of the country&rsquo;s fishing fleet as a paramilitary &ldquo;maritime militia&rdquo;. This shadowy force has been conducting suspicious manoeuvres in the East China Sea in recent months. Letting the data tell the story

I am probably not the only member of our data team who has wondered, when negotiating for space and prominence among all the elegant prose and striking imagery in The Economist, why we can&rsquo;t just let the data do the talking. In recent weeks my dream has come true&mdash;not once, but twice.


In the first of those pieces we walk readers through the stagnation of

American life expectancy  (which was the subject of last week&rsquo;s newsletter) with the help of a single Lexis chart. For the second we had the chance to use our recent cover on the state of the climate as another excuse to tell the story through a series of charts.


The piece looks at the changing pattern in the amount of sunlight Earth reflects into space&mdash;its albedo&mdash;and the implications for global warming. It&rsquo;s a lesser-known aspect of climate science, so we faced the challenge of having to both explain what it is and why it is important.

a visual explainer  that gave the reader a chance to engage in my favourite activity&mdash;staring at lots of charts.

As with much of climate science, Earth&rsquo;s changing energy imbalance is the result of slow, subtle changes in climate systems that interact in complicated ways. This lent itself to a storytelling approach that seamlessly connected different datasets and helped readers understand those links.


Rosamund Pearce, one of our interactive developers, used snap transitions between charts built in D3, a JavaScript charting library, to control the pace of the changes. That meant each frame had a fixed height for both the chart and a short accompanying caption&mdash;so space was at a premium.


Rather than overwhelming the reader with 25 years&rsquo; worth of monthly data on the share of sunlight Earth reflects, we started with a few years to explain the seasonal patterns, then zoomed out to show that, amid the noise, there is a clear downward trend.


Although the charts alone may be captivating to those keen on data visualisations (and perhaps to climate enthusiasts), the line charts by themselves were not particularly engaging. We animated the charts to bring some energy to the piece.


But we still needed a strong visual style to hold our series of charts together. Using bold block background colours made the piece look coherent and injected some warmth. We used a scale of growing intensity, from yellow to orange and magenta, to mark the transitions between different datasets.

The piece starts by showing the decrease in the planet&rsquo;s reflected sunlight. We then demonstrate that this means more energy is absorbed by Earth&mdash;causing an imbalance that is increasing faster than most climate models predicted. Our piece shows that when it comes to understanding one of the most consequential issues in climate science, the charts speak for themselves.

									I am probably not the only member of our data team who has wondered, when negotiating for space and prominence among all the elegant prose and striking imagery in <i>The Economist</i>, why we can&rsquo;t just let the data do the talking. In recent weeks my dream has come true&mdash;not once, but twice.<br>

									The piece looks at the changing pattern in the amount of sunlight Earth reflects into space&mdash;its albedo&mdash;and the implications for global warming. 									As with much of climate science, Earth&rsquo;s changing energy imbalance is the result of slow, subtle changes in climate systems that interact in complicated ways. This lent itself to a storytelling approach that seamlessly connected different datasets and helped readers understand those links.<br>
									<br>
									Rosamund Pearce, one of our interactive developers, used snap transitions between charts built in D3, a JavaScript charting library, to control the pace of the changes. That meant each frame had a fixed height for both the chart and a short accompanying caption&mdash;so space was at a premium.<br>
									<br>
									Rather than overwhelming the reader with 25 years&rsquo; worth of monthly data on the share of sunlight Earth reflects, we started with a few years to explain the seasonal patterns, then zoomed out to show that, amid the noise, there is a clear downward trend.<br>
									<br>
									Although the charts alone may be captivating to those keen on data visualisations (and perhaps to climate enthusiasts), the line charts by themselves were not particularly engaging. We animated the charts to bring some energy to the piece.<br>
									<br>
									But we still needed a strong visual style to hold our series of charts together. Using bold block background colours made the piece look coherent and injected some warmth. We used a scale of growing intensity, from yellow to orange and magenta, to mark the transitions between different datasets.</p></td></tr></table></td></tr></table><!-- //PARAGRAPH --></td></tr></table>
