Rod Liddle, 1960-2026

Our beloved columnist Rod Liddle has died at the age of 66.
Rod, who was also a columnist for the Sunday Times and the Sun, died at the=
James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough yesterday evening, followi=
ng a short illness.
His children, Wilder, Tyler and Emmy, said: =E2=80=98We=E2=80=99re all very=
saddened and shocked at the sudden passing of our wonderful father. He rai=
sed us much as you might imagine, to be inquisitive, brave and always humor=
ous. Even in hospital in the last few weeks, he consistently held the room =
and never let the awful situation show. He has left a legacy that we are al=
l incredibly proud of; he will always be our guide on how to live an extrao=
rdinary life.=E2=80=99
Rod had been writing regularly for The Spectator since 2002, following his =
departure as editor of the BBC=E2=80=99s Today programme. His first column =
for the magazine, entitled =E2=80=98Thought for the Day=E2=80=99, a nod to =
his previous role, was later rebranded as =E2=80=98Liddle Britain=E2=80=99.=
In the years that followed, he shocked, delighted and entertained us with =
columns that lampooned and satirised the great and not-so-good.
Michael Gove, our editor, said:
=E2=80=98Rod Liddle was a journalist of genius. In the tradition of Swift, =
Cobbett and Orwell, he was a satirist who found society=E2=80=99s most sens=
itive spots and made merciless fun of our follies. He was always fearless, =
could be achingly funny and while he had an adamantine core of principle, h=
e could also surprise. Because he was original =E2=80=93 he thought for him=
self and never wanted anyone=E2=80=99s approval =E2=80=93 he was special an=
d brave.
In person, Rod was kind and gentle. He was an indulgent boss, a brilliantly=
creative editor at the BBC and an always steadfast and generous colleague.=
He had a deep love of England, of its culture and in particular of the com=
mon sense of its working class. He was also a master of the written word. H=
e was very much loved by those who knew him. And no words we can summon can=
capture our loss.=E2=80=99

ome time but had been hoping for a recovery and return to the writing which=

and laugh-out-loud wit that we will miss deeply in the weeks and years to =

Former editor of The Spectator Fraser Nelson, said:

or readers whom he loved in return. He used humour to get to the heart of s=
ubjects that other writers tried and failed to reach. He once had a two-sen=
tence blog =E2=80=93 =E2=80=98I heard Owen Jones was on Question Time last =
night. Was he any good?=E2=80=99 =E2=80=93 that broke records for traffic a=
nd reader comments. He enriched and enlivened the lives of hundreds of thou=
sands of readers. There was, and will never be, anyone like him.=E2=80=99
Charles Moore, our Chairman, said:

Keith Mathieson, our former lawyer, said:
=E2=80=98Oddly, perhaps, the more =E2=80=9Ccontroversial=E2=80=9D a writer =
is, the less trouble they are for the lawyer. For all of Rod=E2=80=99s tim=
e as a Spectator columnist, I had the weekly task of clearing his copy: I s=
uppose that means I must have vetted around 1,000 of his columns. Yet in al=
l but a handful of cases, the task resulted in what must have become over t=
he years a boringly familiar, if reassuring, message to the production desk=
: =E2=80=9CRod=E2=80=99s OK.=E2=80=9D The thing about Rod was that whether=
he knew anything about libel law or not (he was not someone I ever thought=
might welcome much of a discussion about the finer points), he knew instin=
ctively how far he could go. And when you=E2=80=99re as funny and clever as=
Rod was, you could go quite a long way without serious legal risk. So Rod=E2=
=80=99s vituperation, and his jokes, generally got past this lawyer =E2=80=93=
and what a pity it would have been for readers if they hadn=E2=80=99t. On=
those rare occasions when some tweaks did seem advisable, Rod never object=
ed and was indeed courtesy itself, never failing to call me =E2=80=9Cmate=E2=
=80=9D.=E2=80=99

On a personal note, my first job at The Spectator was as a fact-checker in =
the research team =E2=80=93 or, as the then editor Fraser Nelson called it,=
the =E2=80=98red team=E2=80=99. It had replaced =E2=80=98Snow Patrol=E2=80=
=99, whose job was to stop lines from Rod=E2=80=99s copy from getting scree=
nshotted out of context, thus setting off Twitter snowflakes or litigious t=
roublemakers and risking the editor his job. The red team was created after=
the snow melted once too often, culminating in an incident known internall=
y as =E2=80=98Rodgate 2=E2=80=99. Rod found the whole thing hilarious and c=
ould not see what the fuss was about. But without that particular fiasco, I=
would never have been hired. So thank you, Rod.
From then on, the favourite part of Tuesday afternoons for my colleagues an=
d me was waiting for Rod=E2=80=99s copy to land in our inboxes. A quick fir=
st read would tell you whether you were going to make it to the pub on time=
or whether it was a =E2=80=98tricky Rod=E2=80=99 week and you would be stu=
ck at your desk late into the evening.
But we never complained, and to be honest, I enjoyed the =E2=80=98tricky=E2=
=80=99 weeks more, because working on Rod=E2=80=99s copy was a privilege an=
d a joy. Week after week his column was unfailingly hilarious and the raw c=
opy was the funniest thing we=E2=80=99d read that day. The reason those Tue=
sdays took so long was that our most important task was to change as few of=
his words as possible. After all, who were we to edit one of the greatest =
columnists ever to fill these pages?
At one summer party, John O=E2=80=99Neill, Sam McPhail =E2=80=93 my colleag=
ues in the red team =E2=80=93 and I were chatting to Rod in The Spectator g=
arden. =E2=80=98Ah, you=E2=80=99re the [see you next Tuesdays] who try to =
ruin my column every week,=E2=80=99 he barked. I was starstruck and terrifi=
ed. But Rod then spent a remarkably generous amount of time with us =E2=80=93=
all when he could have been talking to guests far more important and enter=
taining than us =E2=80=93 comparing notes on the =E2=80=98longitudinal stud=
ies=E2=80=99 we had so often sheepishly questioned and regaling us with sto=
ries of his favourite battles with the editor who had tried to =E2=80=98neg=
otiate a change.=E2=80=99
On another occasion we had to send him a crate of his favourite wine as an =
apology for introducing an error into his copy. He took it with his usual g=
ood humour, asking us to make more mistakes in the future.
On the website this afternoon readers have been posting their favourite Rod=
quotes. Mine came in the column where he discovered he had been afflicted =
with Scottish ancestry ( read here [https://spectator.com/article/help-me-=
im-scottish/]). Only Rod Liddle could describe the shock at learning that, =
rather than being a =E2=80=98decent, solid, industrious Englishman=E2=80=99=
, he was in fact =E2=80=98a chippy, grasping, salad-dodging smackhead=E2=80=
=99. With the only consolation being that: =E2=80=98Henceforth I shall expe=
ct everybody else in England to subsidise me through taxes, while simultane=
ously demanding total independence from them.=E2=80=99 The column led the N=
ational to attempt to whip up an =E2=80=98anti-Scots hate speech storm=E2=80=
=99. Rod annoyed all the right people. There really was no one like him.
Our thoughts are with Rod=E2=80=99s family. RIP.

Our beloved columnist Rod Liddle has died at the age of 66.<br />
<br />
Rod, who was also a columnist for the <em>Sunday Times</em> and the <em>Su=
n</em>, died at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough yesterd=
ay evening, following a short illness.<br />
<br />
His children, Wilder, Tyler and Emmy, said: =E2=80=98We=E2=80=99re all ver=
y saddened and shocked at the sudden passing of our wonderful father. He ra=
ised us much as you might imagine, to be inquisitive, brave and always humo=
rous. Even in hospital in the last few weeks, he consistently held the room=
and never let the awful situation show. He has left a legacy that we are a=
ll incredibly proud of; he will always be our guide on how to live an extra=
ordinary life.=E2=80=99<br />

Rod had been writing regularly for <em>The Spectator </em>since 2002, foll=
owing his departure as editor of the BBC=E2=80=99s <em>Today</em> programme=
=2E His first column for the magazine, entitled =E2=80=98Thought for the Day=E2=
=80=99, a nod to his previous role, was later rebranded as =E2=80=98Liddle =
Britain=E2=80=99. In the years that followed, he shocked, delighted and ent=
ertained us with columns that lampooned and satirised the great and not-so-=
good.<br />

Michael Gove, our editor, said:</p>

He was very much loved by those who knew him. And no words we can summon ca=

is, the less trouble they are for the lawyer. For all of Rod=E2=80=99=
s time as a <em>Spectator</em> columnist, I had the weekly task of clearing=
his copy: I suppose that means I must have vetted around 1,000 of his colu=
mns. Yet in all but a handful of cases, the task resulted in what must have=
become over the years a boringly familiar, if reassuring, message to the p=
roduction desk: =E2=80=9CRod=E2=80=99s OK.=E2=80=9D The thing about R=
od was that whether he knew anything about libel law or not (he was not som=
eone I ever thought might welcome much of a discussion about the finer poin=
ts), he knew instinctively how far he could go. And when you=E2=80=99re as =
funny and clever as Rod was, you could go quite a long way without serious =
legal risk. So Rod=E2=80=99s vituperation, and his jokes, generally got pas=
t this lawyer =E2=80=93 and what a pity it would have been for readers if t=
hey=20
hadn=E2=80=99t. On those rare occasions when some tweaks did seem adv=
isable, Rod never objected and was indeed courtesy itself, never failing to=
call me =E2=80=9Cmate=E2=80=9D.=E2=80=99</p>

On a personal note, my first job at <em>The Spectator</em> was as a fact-c=
hecker in the research team =E2=80=93 or, as the then editor Fraser Nelson =
called it, the =E2=80=98red team=E2=80=99. It had replaced =E2=80=98Snow Pa=
trol=E2=80=99, whose job was to stop lines from Rod=E2=80=99s copy from get=
ting screenshotted out of context, thus setting off Twitter snowflakes or l=
itigious troublemakers and risking the editor his job. The red team was cre=
ated after the snow melted once too often, culminating in an incident known=
internally as =E2=80=98Rodgate 2=E2=80=99. Rod found the whole thing hilar=
ious and could not see what the fuss was about. But without that particular=
fiasco, I would never have been hired. So thank you, Rod.</p>

From then on, the favourite part of Tuesday afternoons for my colleagues a=
nd me was waiting for Rod=E2=80=99s copy to land in our inboxes. A quick fi=
rst read would tell you whether you were going to make it to the pub on tim=
e or whether it was a =E2=80=98tricky Rod=E2=80=99 week and you would be st=
uck at your desk late into the evening.</p>

But we never complained, and to be honest, I enjoyed the =E2=80=98tricky=E2=
=80=99 weeks more, because working on Rod=E2=80=99s copy was a privilege an=
d a joy. Week after week his column was unfailingly hilarious and the raw c=
opy was the funniest thing we=E2=80=99d read that day. The reason those Tue=
sdays took so long was that our most important task was to change as few of=
his words as possible. After all, who were we to edit one of the greatest =
columnists ever to fill these pages?<br />
<br />
At one summer party, John O=E2=80=99Neill, Sam McPhail =E2=80=93 my collea=
gues in the red team =E2=80=93 and I were chatting to Rod in <em>The Specta=
tor</em> garden. =E2=80=98Ah, you=E2=80=99re the [see you next Tuesdays] w=
ho try to ruin my column every week,=E2=80=99 he barked. I was starstruck a=
nd terrified. But Rod then spent a remarkably generous amount of time with =
us =E2=80=93 all when he could have been talking to guests far more importa=
nt and entertaining than us =E2=80=93 comparing notes on the =E2=80=98longi=
tudinal studies=E2=80=99 we had so often sheepishly questioned and regaling=
us with stories of his favourite battles with the editor who had tried to =
=E2=80=98negotiate a change.=E2=80=99 <br />
<br />
On another occasion we had to send him a crate of his favourite wine as an=
apology for introducing an error into his copy. He took it with his usual =
good humour, asking us to make more mistakes in the future.<br />
<br />
On the website this afternoon readers have been posting their favourite Ro=
d quotes. Mine came in the column where he discovered he had been afflicted=
with Scottish ancestry (<a href=3D"https://blend.spectator.co.uk/t/j-l-yhl=
rqld-dujyitlidt-i/" style=3D"outline-style:none;color:#b30517;text-=
decoration:underline;" >read here</a>). Only Rod Liddle could describe the =
shock at learning that, rather than being a =E2=80=98decent, solid, industr=
ious Englishman=E2=80=99, he was in fact =E2=80=98a chippy, grasping, salad=
-dodging smackhead=E2=80=99. With the only consolation being that: =E2=80=98=
Henceforth I shall expect everybody else in England to subsidise me through=
taxes, while simultaneously demanding total independence from them.=E2=80=99=
The column led the <em>National</em> to attempt to whip up an =E2=80=98ant=
i-Scots hate speech storm=E2=80=99. Rod annoyed all the right people. There=
really was no one like him.<br />
