When the history books of the Trump presidency are written, the Iranian ass=
ault will loom large as one of its lowest moments. It is now 158 days since=
American weapons first rained down on Tehran=E2=80=99s forces and there is=
no sign of a lasting settlement. Talks remain ongoing about reopening the =
Strait of Hormuz on a permanent basis, with Donald Trump suggesting =E2=80=98=
it could happen, tomorrow or the next day=E2=80=99. This is not the first t=
ime we have heard those words=E2=80=A6
It=E2=80=99s an inauspicious occasion for Ed Miliband=E2=80=99s first visit=
to Washington as Britain=E2=80=99s 71st Foreign Secretary. Ahead of one-on=
-one talks with his US counterpart Marco Rubio, Miliband has duly trotted o=
ut the usual lines about the direct impact of the Strait=E2=80=99s closure =
on living standards in the US and at home. This is amid some media excitem=
ent about how Miliband =E2=80=93 one of many penitent Labour Trump critics =
=E2=80=93 would collide with MAGAworld.
=E2=80=98Miliwatt=E2=80=99 is, according to the Times, the less-than-witty =
nickname some Trumpites are calling our eco-loving plenipotentiary. But wit=
h so much of the US-UK relationship on autopilot, those within the Foreign =
Office are relaxed about any such tension. =E2=80=98The government is commi=
tted to nurturing our strong, enduring and essential alliance with the US,=E2=
=80=99 said Miliband, in the usual colourless phrase-making that characteri=
ses modern diplomacy.
The relegation of the Foreign Office under successive premiers means that i=
t is not yet clear how much autonomy Miliband will exercise at King Charles=
Street. He is known as an effective minister and commands a certain standi=
ng with both the public and his party. One area where he clearly does inte=
nd to take a lead is =E2=80=93 unsurprisingly =E2=80=93 the field of climat=
e change diplomacy. He has indicated he will be taking the UK=E2=80=99s sea=
t on the World Bank board and intends to meet its president Ajay Banga duri=
ng his visit to discuss development, climate change and strengthening globa=
l resilience.
For Miliband there might be a sense of homecoming about it all: two decades=
ago he left Gordon Brown=E2=80=99s Treasury to lecture in the States, late=
r championing green negotiations at the Copenhagen summit. But in the Strai=
t of Hormuz he now faces arguably a trickier task than anything he has ever=
faced in his ministerial career before. As one official told me recently: =
=E2=80=98The tragedy of Trump term two is that its greatest triumph =E2=80=93=
the removal of [Nicolas] Maduro =E2=80=93 immediately then led to its low=
est.=E2=80=99

When the history books of the Trump presidency are written, the Iranian as=
sault will loom large as one of its lowest moments. It is now 158 days sinc=
e American weapons first rained down on Tehran=E2=80=99s forces and there i=
s no sign of a lasting settlement. Talks remain ongoing about reopening the=
Strait of Hormuz on a permanent basis, with Donald Trump suggesting =E2=80=
=98it could happen, tomorrow or the next day=E2=80=99. This is not the firs=
t time we have heard those words=E2=80=A6<br />
<br />
It=E2=80=99s an inauspicious occasion for Ed Miliband=E2=80=99s first visi=
t to Washington as Britain=E2=80=99s 71st Foreign Secretary. Ahead of one-o=
n-one talks with his US counterpart Marco Rubio, Miliband has duly trotted =
out the usual lines about the direct impact of the Strait=E2=80=99s closure=
on living standards in the US and at home. This is amid some media e=
xcitement about how Miliband =E2=80=93 one of many penitent Labour Trump cr=
itics =E2=80=93 would collide with MAGAworld.<br />
<br />
=E2=80=98Miliwatt=E2=80=99 is, according to the <em>Times</em>, the l=
ess-than-witty nickname some Trumpites are calling our eco-loving plenipote=
ntiary. But with so much of the US-UK relationship on autopilot, those with=
in the Foreign Office are relaxed about any such tension. =E2=80=98The gove=
rnment is committed to nurturing our strong, enduring and essential allianc=
e with the US,=E2=80=99 said Miliband, in the usual colourless phrase-makin=
g that characterises modern diplomacy.<br />
<br />
The relegation of the Foreign Office under successive premiers means that =
it is not yet clear how much autonomy Miliband will exercise at King Charle=
s Street. He is known as an effective minister and commands a certain stand=
ing with both the public and his party. One area where he clearly doe=
s intend to take a lead is =E2=80=93 unsurprisingly =E2=80=93 the field of =
climate change diplomacy. He has indicated he will be taking the UK=E2=80=99=
s seat on the World Bank board and intends to meet its president Ajay Banga=
during his visit to discuss development, climate change and strengthening =
global resilience.<br />
<br />
For Miliband there might be a sense of homecoming about it all: two decade=
s ago he left Gordon Brown=E2=80=99s Treasury to lecture in the States, lat=
er championing green negotiations at the Copenhagen summit. But in the Stra=
it of Hormuz he now faces arguably a trickier task than anything he has eve=
r faced in his ministerial career before. As one official told me recently:=
=E2=80=98The tragedy of Trump term two is that its greatest triumph =E2=80=
=93 the removal of [Nicolas] Maduro =E2=80=93 immediately then led to its =
