How to take a break and reflect this bank holiday
Being a founder can feel like a non-stop job - but it doesn't have to be.=
 Long hours=2C lots of responsiblility and the pressure we put ourselves u=
nder mean founders are more prone to stress and burnout than other roles.

To help you switch off and re-energise this weekend=2C here are some ways=
 you can rest=2C relax and restore=2C ready to take on next week.

1. Sleep =F0=9F=9B=8C

As humans=2C we=E2=80=99re hard-wired to need rest=2C and can last for lon=
ger without food than sleep.

We all know how difficult working can be after a poor night=E2=80=99s kip=
 and this is because sleep isn=E2=80=99t a passive task. It=E2=80=99s proa=
ctively restoring=2C repairing and enhancing ourselves=2C helping us recov=
er from the previous day.

The better sleep we can get=2C the better we'll be at work.

Taking regular breaks away from our devices and desks can help maintain a=
 healthy balance during the working day. Try and leave your laptop every h=
our=2C even if it=E2=80=99s for a few minutes of walking round the block -=
 or your flat - and giving your eyes a break.

Ensuring that you=E2=80=99re able to log off in the evening and detach fro=
m work=2C even when working at home=2C will help build boundaries and enab=
le you to focus on the non-work parts of life=2C like hobbies and spending=
 time with people who care about you.

=E2=80=9CHaving other hobbies=2C interests and passions makes me much more=
 centred and rounded. It also provides me with a sense of safety to help m=
e realise that if my business dies=2C I=E2=80=99ll still have all this oth=
er stuff in my life.=E2=80=9D

3. Reflect =F0=9F=AA=A9

Reflecting helps you to develop your skills and review their effectiveness=
=2C rather than just carry on doing things as you have always done them. I=
t is about questioning=2C in a positive way=2C what you do and why you do=
 it=2C rather than to just carry on behaving in familiar patterns.

How often do you power through day after day at work=2C not giving yoursel=
f the time and space to understand the impact of what you=E2=80=99re doing=
 - both on yourself and your business?

The practice of reflecting takes 3 stages:

Reflect on your experience:
Think about a specific situation - what you did=2C thought and felt at the=
 time.

Reflect on what you learnt:
How does your experience of this situation differ from what you expect of=
 yourself=2C or the principles you want to uphold at work?

Apply your learnings:
Apply what you=E2=80=99ve uncovered the next time you face a similar situa=
tion.

Reflective practice increases self-awareness=2C which is a key component o=
f emotional intelligence=2C helping us develop a better understanding of o=
thers. Reflecting can also help you to develop creative thinking skills=2C=
 and encourages active engagement in your tasks and projects=2C as opposed=
 to passively taking part.

Reflecting can take the form of meeting with others and sharing what you=
=E2=80=99ve been through=2C or simply making notes yourself.

4. Exercise =F0=9F=8F=83=E2=80=8D=E2=99=80=EF=B8=8F

Whether it=E2=80=99s a gym session=2C pilates=2C hiking=2C swimming=2C ten=
nis=2C running or even doga (that=E2=80=99s yoga with your dog and=2C yes=
=2C it=E2=80=99s a thing) it doesn=E2=80=99t matter. Just focus on impleme=
nting physical exercise and getting outside into your routine=2C even when=
 you don=E2=80=99t feel like it. Because=2C often=2C it=E2=80=99s when you=
 don=E2=80=99t feel like it that you=E2=80=99ll need and benefit from it t=
he most.

5. Nutrition =F0=9F=A5=97

You spend around 60% of your waking hours at work - whether at home=2C on=
 the road or in the office. During the day=2C you=E2=80=99ll consume about=
 a third of all your daily intake of food and drink.

What we fuel our bodies with will have a direct impact on how we feel when=
 working=2C and how well we=E2=80=99re able to perform at work. In other w=
ords=2C your startup is what you eat.

Running a busy startup can be stressful and mentally draining=2C and your=
 working schedule can become unpredictable and involve evenings and occasi=
onal weekends. You=E2=80=99ll feel more focussed and attentive if you=E2=
=80=99re able to eat food that gives you long-lasting energy and doesn=E2=
=80=99t make you crash after each meal.

6. Journaling =F0=9F=93=95

Journaling can be a safe space to start opening up=2C and begin the transf=
ormative process to getting back to yourself again. Try and take the time=
 to write at the start or end of every day=2C and if that seems like too m=
uch=2C try once a week on a Friday afternoon. You don=E2=80=99t need a fan=
cy app to do this - a pen and paper will do.
