Hard Feelings and a Soft Landing

As the Fall selling season comes to a close, we may have just witnessed a s=
oft landing for the art market. Although the massive sales will post a robu=
st number North of $3 billion, the trading landscape is surely littered wit=
h many individual deals that will leave hard feelings. Those deals were mad=
e with some trepidation in the months since the Summer as interest rates ro=
se and inflation raged. The result was a market that could only meet or exc=
eed expectations on occasion.

The pain will be shared. The auction houses will suffer a little; guarantor=
s and consignors will wince, too. Everyone will have a lesson from the best=
 teacher of all, experience. But the market itself will have been spared th=
e kind of public humiliation that tarnishes the image of art. That will all=
ow a chastened market with recalibrated expectations to emerge next year. I=
n the meantime, the art world has its annual bacchanalia in Miami to look f=
orward to and then retreats to St. Barthes or Tulum, Aspen or Meg=C3=A8ve, =

pidation in the months since the Summer as interest rates rose and inflatio=
n raged. The result was a market that could only meet or exceed expectation=
