A Visit to the Sheldon Solow Collection
The Sheldon Solow Art and Architecture Foundation, now called the Soloviev =
Foundation, has been offering tours to its gallery in 9 West 57th Street, t=
he home of the Soloviev Group, and Sheldon Solow=E2=80=99s crowning real es=
tate achievement. Sheldon Solow died nearly three years ago but the collect=
ion seems to remain in the family. The tours are a response to pressure in =
the press for the foundation to make its art more accessible to the public.=

The 35 works currently on view are only a fraction of the around 600 works =
the guide says are in the collection. The Soloviev foundation=E2=80=99s las=
t available 990 filing only lists 13 works with a fair market value of $250=
million (and an additional various artworks with a FMV of $677,800.) A num=
ber of other works by Modigliani, Boticelli and Giacometti were sold by Sol=
ow himself.=C2=A0
Of the 35 works on display, there are multiple paintings by C=C3=A9zanne (5=
); Picasso (3); Matisse (5), including the Young Sailor I, above; Mir=C3=B3=
(4), including a 1918 portrait; Dubuffet (5); Giacometti (2); Balthus (2);=
Lichtenstein; van Gogh; Jawlensky, also above; Twombly; Klee; Kline; Morri=
s Louis; Basquiat; Al Held; and sculptures by Henry Moore (2); Giacometti (=
2); Noguchi (2) and a Calder mobile. The collection is well worth waiting t=
o see. So keep an eye out for new tour dates.=C2=A0
Pacita Abad: An Artist for Our Times
=E2=80=9CWho is the Tolstoy of the Zulus? The Proust of the Papuans? I=E2=
=80=99d be glad to read him,=E2=80=9D Saul Bellow quipped to his biographer=
James Atlas 35 years ago during the dawn of the culture wars. Back then, w=
hat is now sneered at as =E2=80=9Cwoke=E2=80=9D was championed as multi-cul=
turalism. Bellow, the Nobel laureate who had done so much to bring Jews fro=
m their status as Other to the universality of art, was being glib because =
he could see no artist like himself outside of Western culture. Of course, =
the crack landed Bellow in hot water.=C2=A0
Imaging Western works of art that draw inspiration from and interrogate ind=
igenous culture comes to mind when thinking about Pacita Abad [ https://lin=

ospective at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis closes in early September=

arly 20 years ago and she nearly sunk into obscurity despite the fact that =
her work and her personal journey are so attuned to our present cultural ag=

In addition to the Walker show, the Tina Kim gallery held Abad=E2=80=99s fi=
rst solo gallery exhibition in New York this Spring where her work [ https:=

textile pieces Abad called trapuntos, sold for asking prices ranging from =
$180,000 to $300,000.=C2=A0
Born in the Philippines to a political family, Abad was an artist with a fi=
rst-generation understanding of the American immigrant experience and a glo=
bal citizen=E2=80=99s feel for the importance and value of indigenous cultu=
ral traditions. Traveling the world throughout her career=E2=80=94and we=E2=
=80=99re not talking about the usual clich=C3=A9 of someone who is a jet-se=
tter, Abad spent enough time in each of these countries to learn something =
about the local crafts and indigenous cultural values=E2=80=94her passport =
accumulated stamps from Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lan=
ka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Taiwan, Hong Kong, France, Guatemala, Banglade=
sh, Myanmar, Nepal, Cambodia, Sudan, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia,=
South Korea, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan, Cote d=E2=80=99Iv=
oire, Mali, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and South Africa.=C2=A0
Although recognized during her lifetime with museum shows and public commis=
sions, including in the Washington, DC metro, he work never caught on comme=
rcially despite novel gambits like a simultaneous selling show in three dif=
ferent Boston-area JC Penney stores in early 1990. Perhaps, like Saul Bello=
w, late 20th Century art buyers were more interested in multi-culturalism i=
n concept than they were able to recognize it in form. =E2=80=9CShe=E2=80=
=99s intentionally using this female, non-Western form of labor that=E2=80=
=99s historically been marginalized as craft,=E2=80=9D the curator of the W=
alker retrospective Victoria Sung told The New York Times [ https://link.sb=

to paintings, she=E2=80=99s essentially collapsing the boundaries between p=
ainting and quilting.=E2=80=9D
The Walker show emphasized Abad=E2=80=99s breadth of engagement, her travel=

RnigHXx6Fx_g6pp7gWdY ]. But the Tina Kim show keyed into her interest in ab=
straction and vibrant use of color. =E2=80=9CShe=E2=80=99s at her most soph=
isticated in terms of color and abstraction,=E2=80=9D observes Ami Yang of =
the Tina Kim Gallery. At auction, primarily in Asia, the later abstract wor=
ks predominate though prices have only become meaningful in the last five y=
ears topping out at an auction record of $87,639.
Tina Kim had seen Abad=E2=80=99s work at Haus Der Kunst in Munich, then at =
Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai, and at the 13th Gwangju Biennale before she be=
gan to represent the estate in 2021. An Asian immigrant to the US herself, =
Kim believed =E2=80=9Cit was significant to work with and support an artist=
who immigrated to the US in the early 60s and was one of the earliest bold=
advocates of immigration issues, as well as global tensions relating to mi=
gration.=E2=80=9D Kim also recognized the growing interest in Asian America=
n artists among institutions.=C2=A0
The gallery works to place Abad=E2=80=99s art in institutions but there=E2=
=80=99s still plenty of room for private collectors to contribute to Abad=
=E2=80=99s reputation. Abad made some 5,000 works in her lifetime. Most are=
with the estate, especially the later abstract works featured in the New Y=
ork show.=C2=A0The challenges of mounting large textile-based works in a do=
mestic setting should not be minimized. The gallery show often achieved the=
best effect by suspending the trapuntos in the middle of the room where th=
e intricate backs of the pieces could be admired along with the arresting i=
mages on the front.
Kim=E2=80=99s gallery has been featuring Abad=E2=80=99s work at art fairs a=

r Contemporary art over the last decade culminating with the launch last Se=
ptember of Frieze Seoul. That doesn=E2=80=99t necessarily mean Korea=E2=80=
=99s domestic art market is going straight up and to the right. Last year, =
according to the English-language Korean Herald, Korea=E2=80=99s auction ma=
rket dropped by nearly half: =E2=80=9CThe total amount of winning bids at S=
outh Korean auction houses Seoul Auction, K-auction and Myart Auction amoun=
ted to 61.3 billion won ($47.9 million) in the first half of 2023, a 47 per=
cent decline from the same period of the preceding year, even though the nu=
mber of auctioned items fell only 8.45 percent during the same period.=E2=
=80=9D Sell-through rates also dropped from 80% to 70%. Interestingly, the =
top three artists in Korea are Lee Ufan, Yayoi Kusama and Kim Whanki.=C2=A0
Joe Lewis Surrenders: It depends on your area of obsession whether you reco=
gnize British billionaire Joe Lewis as the owner of Tottenham Hotspurs or a=
n art collector who once owned a controlling 29% stake in Christie=E2=80=99=
s before selling to Fran=C3=A7ois Pinault. Pinault used the block of shares=
to take the company private in 1998. The transaction would lead to the rev=
elation of price fixing between executives from Christie=E2=80=99s and Soth=
eby=E2=80=99s which ultimately put Sotheby=E2=80=99s largest shareholder, A=
lfred Taubman in prison. Lewis appeared in Federal court in New York this w=
eek surrendering to charges of insider trading. The US Attorney claims Lewi=
s used knowledge gained from owning a drug company to help employees trade =
the stock in lieu of formal retirement benefits. In addition to $300 millio=
n posted for bail, and perhaps more punishing to the 86-year-old, Lewis may=
not use his 323-ft. yacht Aviva [ https://link.sbstck.com/redirect/b5eebf0=

prohibition is a hardship for Lewis who often uses the yacht as a base of =
operations. He=E2=80=99s been known to moor the yacht in major cities and i=
nvite those he has business to meet with him aboard. The yacht is said to h=
old a number of Lewis=E2=80=99s art works, including a Francis Bacon. Among=
the other notable art works Lewis has owned are David Hockney=E2=80=99s Po=
rtrait of an Artist which sold for $90 million in a no reserve auction in 2=
018 and Arturo di Modica=E2=80=99s Charging Bull, a 16-ft. Bronze statue th=
at di Modica dropped on Wall Street in the middle of the night. Lewis event=
ually bought the original casting which remains in New York=E2=80=99s finan=
cial district and commissioned two additional castings that are housed at p=
roperty developments that Lewis owns.=C2=A0
=E2=80=9CDavid Zwirner pivots =E2=80=A6=E2=80=9D ? [ https://link.sbstck.c=

ine on down, this New York Times story=E2=80=94which updates its own story =
from five years ago=E2=80=94is very odd. After five years, the change of pl=
ans is hardly a pivot. And why did this story come out this week? In 2018, =
the Times made a lot of noise about David Zwirner=E2=80=99s plans to build =
a 50,000 square foot gallery headquarters on 21st street in Chelsea. The an=
nouncement had the new gallery opening in 2020. In 2018, Zwirner was still =
in a publicity push for the gallery, owner Zwirner was widely touted as a y=
ounger alternative to Larry Gagosian=E2=80=99s dominance. This week=E2=80=
=99s story (it cannot be ignored, comes out days after Larry Gagosian was p=
rofiled in the New Yorker) says Zwirner will now build a smaller 18,000 squ=
are foot gallery on 19th street but still costing $50 million. Zwirner blam=
es =E2=80=9Cfinancial headwinds during Covid=E2=80=9D but the new plan will=
cost the same as the old plan he presumably couldn=E2=80=99t afford during=
the last five years but will provide a little more than a third of the exh=
ibition space. There=E2=80=99s no mention of increased construction costs o=
r an explanation of why Zwirner is pulling out of the 21st Street project, =
though that project has clearly been delayed. If the original development w=
ere on schedule for a 2020 opening, it would have had to be well underway b=
efore Covid arrived in New York.=C2=A0
Thaddaeus Ropac interview=E2=80=94from baffled boy to global gallerist [ ht=

=80=99s essay in The Atlantic should probably be in the past tense. Moralis=
m has already ruined art criticism. Kotsko grew up in an Evangelical commun=
ity that viewed mainstream culture as hostile to faith. =E2=80=9CEvery artw=
ork has a clear message, and consuming messages that conflict with Christia=
nity will harm one=E2=80=99s faith.=E2=80=9D That stance pervades contempor=
ary criticism, minus the Christianity, of course, but substituting various =
forms of representation. =E2=80=9CEvery artwork is imagined to have a clear=
message; the portrayal of a given behavior or belief is an endorsement and=
a recommendation; consumption of artwork with a given message will directl=
y result in the behaviors or beliefs portrayed.=E2=80=9D Kotsko=E2=80=99s c=
oncern, and this is probably more applicable to what passes for art critici=
sm these days than the movie and music critics Kotsko is writing about, is =
that there is a terrible confusion of art and politics. =E2=80=9CPolitical =

eduction of art to political propaganda leads to bad art, the aestheticizat=

000 square foot gallery headquarters on 21st street in Chelsea. The announc=
ement had the new gallery opening in 2020. In 2018, Zwirner was still in a =
publicity push for the gallery, owner Zwirner was widely touted as a younge=
r alternative to Larry Gagosian’s dominance. This week’s story =
(it cannot be ignored, comes out days after Larry Gagosian was profiled in =
the New Yorker) says Zwirner will now build a smaller 18,000 square foot ga=
llery on 19th street but still costing $50 million. Zwirner blames “f=
inancial headwinds during Covid” but the new plan will cost the same =

217;s essay in The Atlantic should probably be in the past tense. Moralism =
has already ruined art criticism. Kotsko grew up in an Evangelical communit=
y that viewed mainstream culture as hostile to faith. “Every artwork =
has a clear message, and consuming messages that conflict with Christianity=
will harm one’s faith.” That stance pervades contemporary crit=
icism, minus the Christianity, of course, but substituting various forms of=
representation. “Every artwork is imagined to have a clear message; =
the portrayal of a given behavior or belief is an endorsement and a recomme=
ndation; consumption of artwork with a given message will directly result i=
n the behaviors or beliefs portrayed.” Kotsko’s concern, and th=
is is probably more applicable to what passes for art criticism these days =
than the movie and music critics Kotsko is writing about, is that there is =
a terrible confusion of art and politics. “Political problems cannot =
be solved on the aesthetic level. […] Just as the reduction of art to=
