cards are set to overtake cash as the nation's favourite form of payment
this year, giving small businesses the opportunity to go cashless. That's
right - a world where you don't have to fret that you have the correct
amount of change for those who pay for their £2 item with a fifty-pound note
and no more weekly trips to the bank to deposit money either - meaning more
time spent growing your business.
A lot of big companies are reporting this trend too. The pub chain
Wetherspoon says that the proportion of cash payments they receive has
dropped from 78% of all purchases in 2012-13 to 60% in 2016-17. Pret a
Manger said that more than half of their customers now pay by card,
meanwhile Nando’s said card usage now made up 71.3% of all payments at its
restaurants.
So we can go cashless right now?
The problem with digital payments does mean that your business will exclude
those without bank accounts and some members of society such as the elderly
