The Varsity, The Podcast
On Thursday evening, I found myself sitting in Puck=E2=80=99s boardroom at =
our still-newish lower Tribeca office, with its sweeping vistas of Wall Str=
eet, up Church Street to the Jenga building, and the moving 9/11 Memorial. =
On the other side of the glass partition, the office was unsurprisingly ful=
l=E2=80=94a quiet testament to an extraordinary team that loves what they=
=E2=80=99re building so much that they were still hanging around the office=
at 5 p.m. on the Thursday before the long Labor Day weekend.
I was Zooming on the big screen with a sports media C.E.O. I=E2=80=99ll adm=
it that it was a slightly agenda-less conversation=E2=80=94we=E2=80=99d bee=
n put in touch by a mutual pal and were just riffing about our businesses, =
swapping tales from our various startup experiences. Then, totally unprompt=
ed, he unfurled a long soliloquy about his obsessive fandom for my partner
John Ourand, author of Puck=E2=80=99s essential private email on the sports=
media sector, The Varsity ( https://puck.news/newsletters/the-varsity/?utm=
_campaign=3DThe+Backstory+-+LEADS+%288%2F31%2F24%29&utm_content=3DThe+Backs=
tory+-+LEADS+%288%2F31%2F24%29&utm_medium=3Demail_action&utm_source=3Dcusto=
mer.io&utm_term=3Df6c60615e3d301d48d28 ). And when I say =E2=80=9Csoliloquy=
,=E2=80=9D I mean like, it was a Shakespearean soliloquy=E2=80=94the guy la=
id it on thick but also entirely sincerely.
I=E2=80=99m never surprised when a friend or associate professes their feal=
ty to one of my partners. Great writers, after all, are in the connection b=
usiness, and one of the most virtuous evolutions in the industry is that th=
ey=E2=80=99re no longer forced to bury their personalities or interests or =
natural styles. Indeed, we=E2=80=99re all the sum of our experiences and qu=
irks, and loyal readers truly want to know the backstory of the people crea=
ting the work they consume. Maybe this is an invitation into my own psychol=
ogy
as a process-oriented character, but I inevitably find the journey to be as=
compelling as the destination. This is as true in journalism as it is in b=
usiness=E2=80=94and particularly relevant to Puck, where we transparently f=
use these realms.
But Ourand enthusiasts got a little extra treat this week. On Wednesday, Jo=
hn launched his podcast, also artfully titled The Varsity ( https://puck.ne=

a fabulous and extraordinarily introspective conversation with Peyton Manni=
ng, the Hall of Fame quarterback turned fledgling media mogul. Yes, yes, th=
e broader culture recognizes that Manning has leveraged his on-field stardo=
m to become the emcee of the popular ManningCast and the producer of unscri=
pted series, such as Quarterback. But Omaha Productions, the company
that he runs with Jamie Horowitz, secured a $400+ million valuation last ye=
ar through an investment from Peter Chernin=E2=80=99s North Road. Manning a=
nd Horowitz have created a perfectly timed production company to feed the s=
treaming industry=E2=80=99s ravenous appetite for sports and sports-adjacen=
t content.

ith Jimmy Pitaro, the well-liked chairman of ESPN and one of the finalists =
in the bake-off to replace Bob Iger as C.E.O. of Disney. (My two cents: I t=
hink the Disney board will keep Pitaro at ESPN to preserve their optionalit=
y of perhaps, one day, spinning it off with some debt from the mothership. =
And since we=E2=80=99re on the topic, I also think entertainment co-chair D=
ana Walden is slightly ahead of parks tsar Josh D=E2=80=99Amaro in the race=
to succeed Iger=E2=80=94but funny things can and often do happen on the wa=

I won=E2=80=99t give away the goods of the conversation, but I was truly co=
mpelled by Pitaro=E2=80=99s level of honesty about the sweeping evolution i=
n their business. Regardless of what the future holds for Bristol, ESPN=E2=
=80=99s strategy will be studied in business schools for years to come. Pit=
aro needs to strike a nearly impossible balance between defending his linea=
r business and investing aggressively in streaming. (A recent court injunct=
ion to delay Venu, his screwy joint venture with Fox and Warner Bros. Disco=
very, may turn out to be a blessing in disguise=E2=80=A6)
Simultaneously, he has to perform some almost otherworldly P&L gymnastics=
=E2=80=94figuring out how to maximize profits while cutting operating expen=
ses and accounting for the extraordinary
price tag of live sports in his COGS. As with Zaz or Will Lewis or Mark Tho=
mpson, or Iger himself, the leitmotif of this age=E2=80=99s media executive=
s has become capital optimization. That may not be the seduction that led t=
hem to pursue their varying forms of moguldom, but it is indeed the story o=
f our time and precisely what you should expect from Puck=E2=80=94and, of c=
ourse, The Varsity.

l pal and were just riffing about our businesses, swapping tales from our v=
