Defaced has kept a headache journal since January 2021, documenting the dat=
e, place, medication consumed, and occasionally a few scrawled words. After=
years of inconclusive doctor=E2=80=99s visits, he began writing everything=
down as a way to bear witness to something both debilitating and ephemeral=
=2E
The entries selected for the series either remained vividly memorable to th=
e artist or read back as strangely humorous. =E2=80=9Cbath doesn=E2=80=99t =

mi, 1/12/22). =E2=80=9Cbrain bulging out of my head=E2=80=9D (New York, 27/=
2/26). =E2=80=9Cfeel like a tree=E2=80=9D (Malta, 13/11/25).
Defaced has experienced headaches since around the age of five, most of the=
m heat induced. Childhood memories, including trips to Disney and dressing =
up as fictional characters, became foundational to the artist=E2=80=99s und=
erstanding of self portraiture and the hyperreal. Occupying the same space =
as characters from a screen expanded the boundaries of reality and imaginat=
ion.
For Defaced, play became both a coping mechanism and a way of understanding=
the world. As he grew older, that same instinct gradually evolved into wha=
t he now calls art.
For Defaced, childhood play carried a logic close to collage. Toys and char=
acters were folded into imagined worlds of his own making, given new meanin=
gs and stories beyond their original context.
He recalls being deeply drawn to a figure from Kingdom Hearts despite knowi=
ng nothing about the game itself. The figure was packaged alongside Pluto, =
whose familiarity and comfort shaped the way he understood the pairing. Wit=
hin his imaginary world, the =E2=80=9Cheartless=E2=80=9D character graduall=
y became a vessel for expression.
These experiences continue to inform the work today. The objects and images=
people surround themselves with inevitably begin to tell a story about the=
m, whether intentionally or not.
Two reference points repeatedly surfaced during the making of the series fo=
r Defaced.
One was the nineteenth century migraine aura drawings by Hubert Airy. Befor=
e learning more about migraine auras, Defaced initially interpreted the dra=
wings as an abstract attempt to theorize what a headache might look like vi=
sually.
Another major influence was LSD: Dream Emulator, particularly the accompany=
ing Lovely Sweet Dream Journal publication. The idea of using visual art to=
bear witness to something fundamentally unknowable, but through a contempo=
rary and psychological lens, strongly resonated with the artist. The intern=
al logic of both references ultimately felt aligned with the world of the s=
eries.
Described by Defaced as the most personal work he has made, each portrait i=
n the series is built from a single journal entry, incorporating fragments =
such as place, date, medication, and written description. Rather than funct=
ioning as literal likenesses, the figures operate more like totems or exten=
sions of the artist himself, attempting to give visible form to invisible e=
xperiences such as pain, pressure, and psychological weight.
Defaced felt his usual drawing style could not fully capture these ideas, l=
eading him back toward the aesthetics of childhood. Drawing from memories o=
f Nintendo games, PlayStation 2 graphics, and flickering Lego Star Wars ima=
gery on television screens, the series became an exercise in =E2=80=9Cgoing=
back to go forward.=E2=80=9D
