The global auction and art fair calendar hardly seems like the fascinating =
subject that it really is. The art world still operates on a schedule large=
ly established decades ago. The disruption of the global pandemic seemed to=
offer an opportunity to reshape those assumptions. Asia has become more im=
portant and art fairs are proliferating from Seoul to Los Angeles and Paris=
=2E=C2=A0
Nevertheless, 2022 saw the old auction calendar re-emerge. Judging by the v=
ery strong numbers posted last year, sales haven=E2=80=99t suffered.=C2=A0
So what will happen next?=C2=A0
To answer that question,we spoke to Phillips CEO Stephen Brooks. Phillips i=
s the first to open a dedicated Hong Kong headquarters. His rivals will hav=
e their own premises next year. That means there is likely to be an auction=
season twice a year in Hong Kong either in 2024 or sometime thereafter jus=
t as there is in New York and London.=C2=A0
How that will fit into the calendar and how auction houses view the growing=
number of sales opportunities is the subject of our conversation.
Lot Watch
Rare $45m Klimt Landscape to Appear in Sotheby=E2=80=99s May 16th Sale=20
Gustav Klimt=E2=80=99s Insel im Attersee from 1901 will be sold at Sotheby=
=E2=80=99s on May 16th with the expectation that it will sell for $45 milli=
on or more. Similar works like the riverine Litzlberg Am Attersee sold for =
$40 million a dozen years ago. Not long before that in 2006, Paul Allen had=
won the artist=E2=80=99s Birch Forest from 1903 had sold for $40.3 million=
=2E It resold last year for $104 millio=
n. How much of that value comes from A=
llen=E2=80=99s provenance is the question many potential buyers will ask ov=
er the next several weeks.=20
Funda=C3=A7=C3=A3o Ita=C3=BA to Sell $30m Louise Bourgeois Spider at Sotheb=
y=E2=80=99s
Louise Bougeois=E2=80=99s monumental spiders have been trophy works for sev=
eral years now with two different versions setting substantial record price=
s in 2015 and 2019 at $28 and $30 million. Sotheby=E2=80=99s says that this=
casting hasn=E2=80=99t been auctioned in more than a decade. In 2011, anot=
her monumental spider was auctioned for $10.7 million. That should give one=
a sense of how fast these works have been rising in price. Originally acqu=
ired in 1996 by Olavo Setubal, one of the founders of Ita=C3=BA Unibanco, t=
his work is now being sold by the Funda=C3=A7=C3=A3o Ita=C3=BA to fund arti=
sts in Brazil.=20

The Small Boetti Story Continues

Sotheby=E2=80=99s Milan sale of Contemporary art on April 20th had seven lo=
ts by Alighiero Boetti. One of the works was a sought-after Aeri, a body of=
work that has led the price growth for Boetti=E2=80=99s work in the last e=

that sold for =E2=82=AC393,700. That=E2=80=99s a solid price. The other fi=
ve works were tapestry works, another category of Boetti=E2=80=99s work tha=
t has seen great popularity in recent years on the auction and private sale=
s markets. Just to recap, 2022 saw two new record prices achieved for Boett=
i=E2=80=99s large Mappa works at $5.5 and $8.8 million. Boetti=E2=80=99s ma=
rket is segmented by the different bodies of work he created. Much lower do=
wn the price spectrum are the smaller tapestry works that feature 4 x 4 or =
5 x 5 squares of multi-colored letters. A larger piece that is composed of =
16 5 x 5 squares was also sold in Milan. The work made $695,000 with fees. =
Six years ago, it was sold for $390,000. Fourteen years before the work was=
sold at a tenth of the price or $39,145. Another of the seven works is a m=
utli-colored example of Segno e disegno that sold for $195,000. That=E2=80=
=99s a discount from the black-and-white examples that regularly sell for p=
rices of $270,000 to $322,000 recently. The other four works in Milan were =
a 5 x 5 word piece and three 4 x 4 word works. They sold for prices ranging=
from $90,000 to $140,000, all above the low estimate and in line with rece=
nt prices for these works. The volume of trading in the word works continue=
s to rise. In 2022, 24 of the works sold publicly; so far this year, there =
have been eight auctioned. Privately, there were surely many more sold.=20

] The success of Marfa, Texas as an art destination has come at a price to=
the local economy. Visitors to the West Texas city are driving the market =
for short-term rentals which has, in turn, pushed prices on local homes to =
$500,000 to $1 million. That=E2=80=99s a lot for a town with around 1800 fu=
ll-time residents who make a median income of just under $40,000 a year. Th=

7gWdY ]: Hill-Stead, the museum in Farmington, CT that preserves the home d=
esigned by Theodate Pope Riddle with the extraordinary art collection of Al=
fred Pope, has reunited the original art collection that Pope gathered arou=
nd the turn of the 20th Century. Cleveland industrialist Pope was friends w=
ith Whistler and Mary Cassatt. Beginning in the late 1880s, he acquired 40 =
important works by Monet, Degas, Manet, Pissarro and Renoir. The exhibition=
brings two Monets that Pope had sold back to Hill-Stead to hang besides th=
e two Monet grainstacks still in the house. A Cassatt portrait returns alon=
g with a Degas interior and William Koch is lending his Monet landscape tha=
t Theodate had sold in the 1940s. It joins a Monet painting of a ship at lo=
w tide and the third Monet grainstack that Pope had owned and eventually so=
ld to the Havemeyers. It is on loan from the Shelburne museum in Vermont.=

2 saw two new record prices achieved for Boetti’s large </span><em>Ma=
ppa</em><span> works at $5.5 and $8.8 million. Boetti’s market is seg=
mented by the different bodies of work he created. Much lower down the pric=
e spectrum are the smaller tapestry works that feature 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 squar=
es of multi-colored letters. A larger piece that is composed of 16 5 x 5 sq=
uares was also sold in Milan. The work made $695,000 with fees. Six years a=
go, it was sold for $390,000. Fourteen years before the work was sold at a =
tenth of the price or $39,145. Another of the seven works is a mutli-colore=
d example of </span><em>Segno e disegno </em><span>that sold for $195,000. =
That’s a discount from the black-and-white examples that regularly se=
ll for prices of $270,000 to $322,000 recently. The other four works in Mil=
an were a 5 x 5 word piece and three 4 x 4 word works. They sold for prices=
ranging from $90,000 to $140,000, all above the low estimate and in line w=
ith recent prices for these works. The volume of trading in the word works =
continues to rise. In 2022, 24 of the works sold publicly; so far this year=
