Decomposed Ritual Symbols is a collection of three artworks by Zhang Zhan=
which follow on from Decomposed Ritual Symbols I=2C which was launched in=
December 2020 as part of the FABRICA Frame group show. The collection inc=
ludes a series of videos that are constantly decomposing and recomposing t=
wo iconic Chinese ritual ornament designs=2C =E5=9B=8D (shu=C4=81ngx=C7=90=
=2C double happiness=2C ligature) and =E5=A5=A0 (di=C3=A0n=2C libation)=2C=
that are prominently seen in Chinese wedding and death ceremonies. By app=
lying kinetic typography generated by custom software running in real-time=
=2C the artist explores dynamic meanings of the ritual symbols while discl=
osing the tension underlying such social conventions.

Zhang Zhan is a new media artist and interaction designer from Shanghai. G=
raduated from New York University Shanghai in 2017 with a bachelor=E2=80=
=99s degree in Interactive Media Arts=2C he moved to Italy to attend Polit=
ecnico di Milano and started his art and design residency at Fabrica. Comi=
ng from a creative technologist background=2C he creates artworks that foc=
us on integrating various media into the music domain with digital computi=
ng and fabrication=2C and produces interactive experiences revolving aroun=
d contemporary digital cultures and rituals.
