I=E2=80=99d been eager to speak with Bill, who=E2=80=99d left his apartment=
that morning for an unusual reporting journey=E2=80=94to visit Sam Bankman=
-Fried at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. A couple months ag=
o, of course, S.B.F. was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convic=
ted of two counts of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, securitie=
s fraud, commodities fraud, and money-laundering. Bill was going to be the =
first journalist to share S.B.F.=E2=80=99s prison experience with the world=
=2E
After I picked up the phone, Bill launched into an eloquent monologue depic=
ting his experience=E2=80=94the jarring reality of entering the dangerous p=
rison, the shock of seeing the eerily thin S.B.F. in the visiting quarters,=
and the
various details of their conversation. Bill recounted some of the more poig=
nant moments of their chat, everything from Sam=E2=80=99s regrets about pro=
moting his former girlfriend Caroline Ellison to run Alameda to the grim re=
alities of prison life: the bad food and the tedium and the chilling specte=
r of spending one=E2=80=99s days around violent criminals. He also told Bil=
l, somewhat hilariously, that a few fellow prisoners had asked him for fina=
ncial advice.
Was he chastened, I asked Bill? After all, here was a young man, once the r=
ichest person under 30, who had been accused of stealing $8 billion=E2=80=
=94a guy who had brought extraordinary ignominy on his family and former co=
lleagues, among others. Bill acknowledged that Sam had a slightly more comp=
lex assessment of his own misdeeds. At that point, however, I had to hang u=
p to attend my panel, counting down the hours till a draft would arrive in =
my inbox.

st and future. But Bill also reports that Sam remains steadfast about his i=
nnocence and spends an hour a day on the phone with his counsel, working th=
rough the contours of his appeal. S.B.F. will never be as ubiquitous behind=
bars as he was while running FTX, but it=E2=80=99s safe to assume that he=
=E2=80=99s not going to vanish from the spotlight anytime soon.

=80=99d been eager to speak with Bill, who=E2=80=99d left his apartment tha=
t morning for an unusual reporting journey=E2=80=94to visit <b>Sam Bankman-=
Fried</b> at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. A couple months=
ago, of course, S.B.F. was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being con=
victed of two counts of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, securi=
ties fraud, commodities fraud, and money-laundering. Bill was going to be t=
he first journalist to share S.B.F.=E2=80=99s prison experience with the wo=
rld.<br/><br/>After I picked up the phone, Bill launched into an eloquent m=
onologue depicting his experience=E2=80=94the jarring reality of entering t=
he dangerous prison, the shock of seeing the eerily thin S.B.F. in the visi=
ting quarters, and the
various details of their conversation. Bill recounted some of the more poig=
nant moments of their chat, everything from Sam=E2=80=99s regrets about pro=
moting his former girlfriend <b>Caroline Ellison </b>to run Alameda to the =
grim realities of prison life: the bad food and the tedium and the chilling=
specter of spending one=E2=80=99s days around violent criminals. He also t=
old Bill, somewhat hilariously, that a few fellow prisoners had asked him f=
or financial advice.<br/><br/>Was he chastened, I asked Bill? After all, he=
re was a young man, once the richest person under 30, who had been accused =
