nds of influencers and content creators receive paid invoices on time. The=
company launched in September 2019 with =C2=A330=2C000 that Ezeike had sa=
ved from his ex-banking job at Barclays. Their most recent raise of over $=
1=2C000=2C000 (https://www.businessinsider.com/read-pitch-deck-that-scored=
-this-fintech-startup-1-million-2021-7?r=3DUS&IR=3DT&mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&m=
c_eid=3DUNIQID) was heavily backed by Blue Y Capital (early Monzo investo=
rs) and reputable Angel investors such as Music Producer=2C Despa Robinson=
=2E
From the outside looking in=2C this is pretty impressive! But Ezeike told=
us exclusively=2C =E2=80=9CWe shared our pitch deck on Slide Bean (https=

In June 1921=2C =E2=80=98Black Wall Street=E2=80=99 (https://www.history.c=
om/news/black-wall-street-tulsa-race-massacre?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=
=3DUNIQID) =2C a predominantly black town in Tulsa=2C Oklahoma=2C was bomb=
ed down by a white mob. The reason why? They didn=E2=80=99t like the succe=
ss black people were having after being freed from slavery. At this time=
=2C black people were being redlined=2C which meant that they couldn=E2=80=
=99t cover losses with insurance and they didn=E2=80=99t have the money to=
recover.
Whilst this may seem like a long time ago=2C it was only in 2020 that the=
National Community Reinvestment Coalition (https://ncrc.org/lending-discr=
imination-within-the-paycheck-protection-program/?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_e=
id=3DUNIQID) found a disparity in black and white loan applications. The=
study revealed a black applicant being turned away from opening an accoun=
t with a bank. The same bank encouraged a white applicant=2C with a simila=
r profile and credit history=2C to apply and offered to send PPP informati=
on.
Systemic racism and racial biases are the biggest contributors to this iss=
ue. A lot of black people do not start businesses because they lack the re=
sources=2C tools and knowledge to even consider it a possibility. Entrepre=
neurship requires a special sort of hustle and determination=2C something=
a lot of people from immigrant backgrounds have. A study by Aston Univers=
ity (https://www2.aston.ac.uk/news/releases/2018/july/immigrants-twice-as-=
entrepreneurial-as-white-britons?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) sho=
wed that people from ethinc minority backgrounds and immigrants to the UK=
are twice as likely to be early-stage entrepreneurs.

The pool of black businesses is wide=2C but unfortunately not visible. How=
ever=2C some that have made groundbreaking news recently include Oliver an=
d Alexander Kent-Braham of Marshmallow (https://www.marshmallow.com/?mc_ci=
d=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) =2C a digital-first car insurance provider=
=2E In September 2021=2C the twins became the UK=E2=80=99s second Black unic=
orn (https://sifted.eu/articles/marshmallow-raise/?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_=
eid=3DUNIQID) founders after raising an impressive $83m Series B includin=
g from Seedrs=E2=80=99 very own alumni=2C Passion Capital (https://www.see=
drs.com/insights/our-news/press-release-passion-capital-opens-fund-to-crow=
d-investors-in-collaboration-with-seedrs?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQ=
ID) .
The Kent-Braham twins and their CTO David Goat=C3=A9 founded the company i=
n 2017 after having a conversation with a friend who had just moved to the=
UK and was being hit with heavy car insurance quotes. After doing some di=
gging=2C it was clear that the quotes were based on an outdated system=2C=
as well as the fact their friend was an immigrant=2C which typically boos=
ts insurance quotes. The trio set out to =E2=80=9Coffer affordable car ins=
urance to UK newcomers=E2=80=9D=2C and now being FCA approved=2C they are=
able to sell insurance directly to consumers.
In July 2021=2C we had the pleasure of seeing Black Ballad successfully ra=
ise =C2=A3338=2C580 from 1=2C391 investors on Seedrs (https://www.seedrs.c=
om/black-ballad?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) =2C with an initial t=
arget of =C2=A3250=2C000. Bola Awoniyi and Tobi Oredein=2C husband and wif=
e duo=2C set out to create a lifestyle digital media company for black wom=
en in Britain. Black Ballad had dabbled in crowdfunding before=2C raising=
over =C2=A310=2C000 through pre-selling memberships. The subscription-bas=
ed model now has over 1=2C000 paying members and 20=2C000 email subscriber=
s. Oredein=2C whose background is in journalism=2C told Metro (https://met=
ro.co.uk/2020/08/29/black-owned-tobi-oredein-founder-black-ballad-13194496=
/?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) that journalism in the UK is an=
=E2=80=9Coverwhelmingly white=2C middle-class industry.=E2=80=9D The aim=
for Black Ballad is to =E2=80=9Ctell the human experience through the eye=
s of Black British women=E2=80=9D.
Yuty (https://www.yuty.me/?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) =2C a UK-b=
ased sustainable beauty brand=2C uses advanced AI technology and extensive=
data to match consumers with the right beauty products. According to Simi=
Lingren=2C the brains behind Yuty=2C they were the tenth black female-led=
business to receive VC funding in the UK. Lingren mentions on the Yuty si=
te=2C =E2=80=9CI founded Yuty because one-size fits all beauty doesn=E2=80=
=99t fit anyone. When things don=E2=80=99t work=2C we=E2=80=99re made to f=
eel like it=E2=80=99s our fault=2C like we don=E2=80=99t fit in.=E2=80=9D
Initially looking to raise =C2=A3300=2C000 pre-seed=2C Yuty expanded its r=
ound to =C2=A3500=2C000 to include additional investors. The round was led=
by Ada Ventures and included notable Angel investors such as Nicole Crent=
sil=2C (https://uk.linkedin.com/in/nicole-krystal-crentsil-4008ab75?mc_cid=
=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) a Ghanaian-British entrepreneur who is the=
CEO of Black Girl Fest=2C (https://www.blackgirlfest.com/?mc_cid=3D9a90e5=
44a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) a platform dedicated to Black women=2C girls=2C and=
non-binary people.
The BYP Network (https://byp-network.com/?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNI=
QID) was created in the autumn of 2016 after a culmination of the BLM mov=
ement and personal experiences of their founder=2C Kike Oniwinde. Simultan=
eously=2C the UK was experiencing the highest rates of knife crime at the=
time. The UK has always suffered with a lack of representation of ethnic=
minorities in the workplace=2C turning young children to predominantly lo=
ok to the entertainment industry for inspiration. People Management report=
ed that just 1.5 percent (https://www.peoplemanagement.co.uk/news/articles=
/black-employees-hold-just-1-5-per-cent-of-senior-roles?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a=
2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID#gref) of senior roles within the private sector were he=
ld by black professionals. The entertainment industry isn=E2=80=99t solely=
to blame for knife crime=2C but its reach is wide=2C and if young black c=
hildren hardly see themselves in senior positions=2C how do they know it=
=E2=80=99s possible?
By 2020=2C BYP Network had scaled to a 6-figure company with over 40=2C000=
members. Their business provides services for both members and corporate=
partners such as Facebook=2C Soho House and Accenture. To date=2C they ha=
ve over 60=2C000 social media followers=2C have hosted over 5=2C000 member=
s at online and offline events=2C and processed 18=2C000 job applications=
through the BYP platform. In 2020=2C BYP decided to crowdfund on Seedrs (=
https://www.seedrs.com/bypnetwork?mc_cid=3D9a90e544a2&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) wi=
th a target of =C2=A3500=2C000. Having reached their target in days=2C the=
y eventually finished the round with =C2=A3896=2C947 from 1=2C204 investor=
s=2C 178% overfunded.

d are doing and the thousands of lives they=E2=80=99re impacting whether t=

g freed from slavery. At this time=2C black people were being redlined=2C=
which meant that they couldn=E2=80=99t cover losses with insurance and th=
ey didn=E2=80=99t have the money to recover.
