Sanctuary Spaces is a collection of two digital editions by Doug Foster wh=
ich derive from large scale installation pieces by the artist.
Both works reference Foster's interest in creating transcendental=2C mesme=
rising spaces which transform existing structures into gateways to other w=
orlds. The two works in the collection are extensions of installation piec=
es by Foster; they are sister works=2C sharing the same score by UNKLE (J=
Lavelle=2C P Clements and J Griffith) as well as thematic and stylistic s=
imilarities.

Before the invention of photography=2C botanical illustration was the only=
way to visually record the many species of plants on the planet. The illu=
strations were used by physicists=2C pharmacists=2C botanical scientists f=
or identification=2C analysis=2C and classification. While these works are=
no longer relevant for today's researchers=2C they have become an inspira=
tion for artists who pay homage to life and nature using contemporary tool=
s and methodologies.
The Artificial Botany is part of this context. The collection seeks to exp=
lore the latent expressive capacity of botanical illustrations through the=
use of machine learning algorithms.
