This week we met the founders of sustainable fashion brand Paynter Jacket=
Co. The pair - recently married - shared their story with our audience of=
founders and mentors on our virtual stage as part of our regular monthly=
MeetUps.
Paynter aren't a typical clothing startup. For one=2C they don't sell much=
=2E And when they do - orders can take weeks to arrive. The founders pride t=
hemselves on doing things differently in an industry known for next day de=
livery and over-production.
Becky and Huw=2C pictured above=2C hand-pick suppliers after extensive res=
earch=2C and order limited runs of their products to ensure that nothing i=
s wasted. And once the allocated order has been sold=2C that's it.
It means that they only produce what they know is already accounted for=2C=
and then customers wait whilst the jackets are carefully put together by=
their partners in Portugal.

=E2=80=9COn our first launch day=2C a Saturday at 9am=2C we knew we had en=
ough fabric for 300 jackets - the minimum order - and knew the website was=
working. So we said we=E2=80=99d keep the website open for a week to sell=
300 and have enough money to place the order.
We sold out in 40 minutes=E2=80=9D
But how did they do it?
As a brand=2C Paynter are known for authenticity and openness with their c=
ustomers. They built an online community long before selling anything=2C a=
nd their slow and transparent 'building in public' has helped developed a=
deep trust with a small but growing list of followers and customers.
The pair shared their insights on their approach to launching their first=
jacket - Batch Number 1.
=F0=9F=93=B2 They slowly built a following of 2-3k on Instagram (https://w=
ww.instagram.com/paynterjacket/?hl=3Den&mc_cid=3D3314dda706&mc_eid=3DUNIQI=
D) by engaging their audience with questions about what style and fabrics=
they should use=2C and what customers wanted in a jacket.
=F0=9F=9A=AB They set up a waiting list on their website to collect emails=
- key to building momentum but also keeping customers engaged through the=
ir brand led newsletters.
=F0=9F=90=8C Founders Becky and Huw took their time. It was over two years=
from when they started growing a community to selling their first jackets=
=2E Patience=2C it seems=2C pays off.
Paynter are just getting started. But growing doesn't just mean making mor=
e sales or improving profit margins. As Becky said:

This week we met the founders of sustainable fashion brand Paynter Jacket=
Co. The pair - recently married - shared their story with our audience of=
founders and mentors on our virtual stage as part of our regular monthly=

Paynter aren't a typical clothing startup. For one=2C they don't sell much=
=2E And when they do - orders can take weeks to arrive. The founders pride t=
hemselves on doing things differently in an industry known for next day de=
livery and over-production. <br>

Becky and Huw=2C pictured above=2C hand-pick suppliers after extensiv=
e research=2C and order limited runs of their products to ensure that noth=
ing is wasted. And once the allocated order has been sold=2C that's it.&nb=
sp;<br>
<br>
It means that they only produce what they know is already accounted for=2C=
and then customers wait whilst the jackets are carefully put together by=
their partners in Portugal. <br>
