Welcome Back
The transition from 2022=E2=80=99s booming Contemporary art market to the m=
ore cautious and circumspect market of 2023 seems to have continued through=
the Winter of 2024. Frieze Los Angeles is already in full swing with Felix=
Art Fair opening today and Frieze tomorrow. We=E2=80=99ll try to give you =
a sense of the mood in LA on Friday. For now, we=E2=80=99re looking ahead t=
o Friday=E2=80=99s sale of Contemporary art at Sotheby=E2=80=99s. We=E2=80=
=99ve gone through the lots and tried to identify specific works that might=
give a better sense of the market going forward. There will surely be othe=
r works that will out-perform expectations and some that will show market w=
eakness. Next week, we=E2=80=99ll look at the results. But since the New Yo=
rk mid-season sales have been split over a two-week period, you=E2=80=99ll =
have to wait until later in the month for a market report. In the meantime,=
we=E2=80=99re gearing up for the London sales and will have more details o=
n that next week.=20
Lot Watch
Alice Neel=E2=80=99s Portrait of David McKee and His First Wife at Christie=
=E2=80=99s
David McKee was a British art dealer who migrated to the US in the 1960s ev=
entually finding himself as Marlborough Gallery under Frank Lloyd, the orig=
inal global gallerist. This double portrait of McKee and his then wife, Jan=

Neel was painted a year after McKee joined Marlborough to take over a numb=
er of the estates that the gallery represented including the David Smith es=
tate where he worked closely with Clement Greenberg. While at Marlborough, =
McKee had a strong working relationship with Philip Guston. So it was natu=
ral that Guston would become his artist when he struck out on his own in 19=
74. Marlborough in that period had become entangled in a series of lawsuits=
that revealed Frank Lloyd=E2=80=99s dealing practices and severely damaged=
the gallery=E2=80=99s reputation. But McKee=E2=80=99s relationship with Al=
ice Neel didn=E2=80=99t come through art dealing. McKiee had a close friend=
who had grown up in the same building as Neel. McKee had been to dinner at=
Neel=E2=80=99s apartment but her art was not his idea of what was exciting=
in the period. The work is priced at =C2=A31.2m ($1.6m) which puts it on p=
ar with the most recent sales of Neel=E2=80=99s double portraits of adults.=
=20
Results
Sotheby=E2=80=99s Charity Auction for Iovine & Young Center =3D $2.47m
Charity auctions are never the best gauge of the market but it is worth not=
ing that three of the works offered in Sotheby=E2=80=99s sale to benefit th=
e Iovine and Young Center held at Jimmy Iovine=E2=80=99s Los Angeles home l=
ast night sold quite well. The strongest sale was Hilary Pecis=E2=80=99s Re=
cord Collection made $700,000 over a $100,000 estimate with no buyer=E2=80=
=99s premium. Rashid Johnson=E2=80=99s Untitled Seascape Drawing was estima=
ted at $250,000 but made $400,000. Derek Fordjour=E2=80=99s Single Sculler =
Stride sold for $380,000. The remaining 8 works of the 11 offered found buy=
ers at prices within or near the estimates.=20
Sotheby=E2=80=99s Contemporary Curated Preview
Sotheby=E2=80=99s has 267 lots in its Contemporary Curated sale this Friday=
with a combined low estimate of $23.8 million. In case you were thinking t=
he much-discussed market slowdown for Contemporary art has reduced the volu=
me of these sales, the same sale last year had fewer lots (231) but almost =
exactly the same low estimate at $23.6 million. Of course, that means the a=
verage estimate value is lower this year than last year reflecting the way =
the market expanded last year at lower price points.=20
One further observation, the aggregate low estimate for the September New Y=
ork edition of Contemporary Curated was also in the $23 million range. But =
the sales performance was quite different. In March of 2023, the premium to=
tal for the sale was $35.8 million; by September, that number had dropped t=
o $25 million off a very similar estimate base.=20
It=E2=80=99s no secret that 2023 saw an erosion of interest in a number of =
different artists. Sotheby=E2=80=99s has now had several months to recalibr=
ate demand and respond with more but cheaper lots in the hope that the resu=
lt will be more robust than in September. That said, the top lots in the sa=
le don=E2=80=99t reflect much in the way of market rotation toward new name=
s. Sotheby=E2=80=99s has works by Yayoi Kusama, Cy Twombly, Jean-Michel Bas=
quiat, KAWS, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Sam Gilliam, David Hammons, Damien Hir=
st, George Condo, Alex Katz, Jonas Wood, Jad=C3=A9 Fadojutimi, Jeff Koons, =
Jean Dubuffet and Lee Bontecou in descending order of estimate.=20
The sales are stocked with hold-over works from the major collections Sothe=
by=E2=80=99s had on offer last November: Emily Fisher Landau, Chara Shreyer=
, John Cheim and others. There are also more works by women abstract painte=
rs from a collection organized around that theme. That will give the market=
some more information on that particular collecting trend, especially the =

ot in the sale and estimated at $50,000 but should be expected to go for a =
significantly higher price. How high will tell us more about the depth of d=
emand for her works in particular and female abstract painters in general. =

Another woman abstract painter, Etel Adnan, will open the sale with a parti=
cularly small Mount Tam work from 2010 that is estimated at $60,000 [ https=

rable work in size, color and segmentation was sold last year for $166,000 =
in London. Sotheby=E2=80=99s is testing the New York market with this sale.=
So we=E2=80=99ll know a bit more once the auction is over.=20
Last November, Sotheby=E2=80=99s did better than expected with an Ad Reinha=
rdt painting from 1960. The black 60-inch square work sold for $3.5 million=
over a $1.5m low estimate. The sale eked out a new record over the price p=
aid for a red-on-red work in May that was guaranteed for $3.25 million. The=
day before, a black painting sold for $1.24 million. In this sale, Sotheby=
=E2=80=99s has a 17-inch square black work by Reinhardt from 1960 on offer =
with a $120,000 estimate [ https://substack.com/redirect/081a75eb-723c-436d=

rk was a personal gift from Reinhardt to Lucian Krukowski whose estate is n=

Blue Unions from the same year that is a touch smaller for $731,175 the yea=

Shreyer also had a Richard Prince girlfriend photograph from 1993. It is es=

for $308,700 a little more than two years ago in Peter Brant=E2=80=99s sale=
of art and design.=20
Chicago painter Miyoko Ito died in 1983 but her first significant sale came=
only in 2020 when Wright Auctions in Chicago sold a 1961 work for a little=
more than $100,000. Since that time, Ito=E2=80=99s work has been shown at =
Michael Werner and Mathew Marks galleries. Significant sales took place a y=
ear ago during Adam Lindemann=E2=80=99s sale when a 1975 painting made $15=
7,000 and last May when Sundown from 1960 sold for $277,200. The surrealist=
-inspired artist=E2=80=99s latest work to surface is estimated at only $40,=

Since Hauser + Wirth started representing the estate of Winfred Rembert, th=
ere has been a steady stream of the former Civil Rights worker=E2=80=99s ar=
t coming to auction. Most of the pieces sold at auction were received by th=
e consignors as gifts from the artist. The estate works are priced above th=
e current auction market but these public sales have allowed institutions t=
o acquire Rembert=E2=80=99s work at reasonable prices in the 100,000 range=
=2E Two larger chain-gang works have so=
ld at auction for prices of $127,000 a=
nd $118,000. Sotheby=E2=80=99s Rembert is estimated at $40,000 and appears =

Kenneth Noland=E2=80=99s market has been moving slowly but in punctuated sa=
les that indicate continuing interest in the abstract painter. Sotheby=E2=

se of the mood in LA on Friday. For now, we’re looking ahead to Frida=
y’s sale of Contemporary art at Sotheby’s. We’ve gone thr=
ough the lots and tried to identify specific works that might give a better=
sense of the market going forward. There will surely be other works that w=
ill out-perform expectations and some that will show market weakness. Next =

come through art dealing. McKiee had a close friend who had grown up in the=

inking the much-discussed market slowdown for Contemporary art has reduced =
the volume of these sales, the same sale last year had fewer lots (231) but=
almost exactly the same low estimate at $23.6 million. Of course, that mea=
ns the average estimate value is lower this year than last year reflecting =
the way the market expanded last year at lower price points. </p><p style=
=3D"color: rgb(64, 64, 64); font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin: 0 0=
20px 0;">One further observation, the aggregate low estimate for the Septe=
mber New York edition of Contemporary Curated was also in the $23 million r=
ange. But the sales performance was quite different. In March of 2023, the =
premium total for the sale was $35.8 million; by September, that number had=
dropped to $25 million off a very similar estimate base. </p><p style=3D"c=

0;"><span>It’s no secret that 2023 saw an erosion of interest in a n=
umber of different artists. Sotheby’s has now had several months to r=
ecalibrate demand and respond with more but cheaper lots in the hope that t=
he result will be more robust than in September. That said, the top lots in=
the sale don’t reflect much in the way of market rotation toward new=
names. Sotheby’s has works by </span><strong>Yayoi Kusama,</strong><=

over the price paid for a red-on-red work in May that was guaranteed for $3=
